What does this entail? How does one go about "renting" points? How many points are needed per night at a DVC place? I am very confused by all of this if someone could help me out?

Here's one way to go about it:

http://www.dvcrequest.com/

I'll be totally honest, I've never used them, and can't vouch for their quality or honesty, but they do seem to have a goodly amount of testimonials. They do a good chunk of the work for you, and charge $13 a point. Now, I've heard of individual dvc owners, on their own, maybe on other disney fan forums, maybe through ebay, and they're only charging 10-11 a point, which would be cheaper, but then you're doing more of the work, with no one to help you if the owner who agreed to rent you their points flakes out. It involves a little more trust. At least with this website, or another one like it, you might have some recourse, someone to gripe to, if the deal goes south.

As far as how many points you'll need for your vacation, that will depend on various factors - time of year, length of stay, the resort you choose and the type of room (studio, 1BR, 2BR or Grand Villa). If you wanted to stay at Boardwalk Villas, or Animal Kingdom Villas, there are also subcategories based on the view. But the above link also has a point calculator, which will let you know exactly how many points you'll need. Type in your preferred check-in and check-out dates, and the resort(s) you're interested in, and you'll get the numbers you need. Multiply that number by 13, and that's the dollar amount you need to rent through that particular company.

You can also check out http://www.dis-boards.com (the DVC section) for points rentals. You can get a primer here - http://www.mouseowners.com/RentingPoints.html

I've typically seen anywhere between $8 and $12 per point for rental costs. It depends on the person, where their points are at, and really what they are looking to get out of their points on a monetary basis. I know there are people who have a lot of points that rent some out every year to cover maintenance fees. Not a bad deal. We could make money if we rented out all our points - even at $10/point we'd make over twice what our annual dues are.

Rental is done on the honor system. There is an implicit trust in place by both sides. You trust they will make the reservation for you. They trust you will send proper payment for the points being rented. It is not something we've done, and I'm not sure we will ever do it since we usually plan on using our points. :)

As for points/room, you can check here - http://www.mouseowners.com/PointsCharts.html

The best advice I could give would be to check out the Doorway To Dreams store over at Woodfield Mall( only about 20 min from your town). Why rent points when they run great promos to buy? We bought from there in Oct 07 and received matching points for 1 yr. VERY low pressure presentation, in fact our sales rep talked us out of buying on the spot. Told us to go home and think about it over the weekend!

Thanks for all the responses everyone. I don't see us buying anything right now--not with two boys in college and school loans. But I will read the thread pointed out by DVC Mike. We aren't looking for this year...we are already booked for our 25th anniversary at the CSR with the bounceback dining, but were thinking of maybe next year doing this when our oldest has graduated from college and seeing if the younger college student can take a week to be with us.

I had just rented out two different sets of points to two different people and I found the people on http://www.disboards.com/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=29. This has a list of people renting out points and people requesting reservations. I recommend this site I have had no problems so far with renting the points out. Of course you are renting from someone. I think this takes some trust. The Ultimate Disney World Savings Guide 2008 by Beth Haworth has good tips on renting DVC points. I tried to paste it here but the book wouldnt let me copy it. Probably b/c its something you have to purchase. You download it from the internet. I probably could print it and mail it to you. Send me a private message if you want me to do that.
