Help me decide - Dining Plan or AAA

Looks like we're headed back to WDW in April, staying at CBR (6 nights). The only detail left is whether we go with the Magic Your Way package plus dining ... or take advantage of the AAA room only discount of 20%.

Room only (with discount) + buying tickets online = $1595

Package price = $2280

Other than the dining plan, we have no other need for the package since we are driving.

Because there is no AAA discount with the package, cost of the dining plan goes up to something like $114/day. There are three of us - two adults and one five-year old. Seems like a lot, but I plotted a typical day at Epcot using the plan (without just targeting only expensive items) and came up to $135.

We like the fact that food would essentially be pre-paid and that the dining plan gives us freedom to try restaurants that we wouldn't normally go to. But, we would be eating "more expensive" with the dining plan. We certainly wouldn't spend $135 a day at Epcot without the plan.

There really is no right or wrong answer. I'm leaning toward the AAA room-only option, but I guess I'm just looking for some different opinions.

One side question ... last time we stayed at a Disney resort, you could charge up to $500 to your room. At that point, you needed to pay it off to get another $500 (and I assume that is still true now). My question is, can we put money on the account at check-in? In other words, give them, say, $750 when we check in so that we're spending the money that we've already given them.

I would definitely go with the cheaper room. Although the "prepaid" aspect of the Dining Plan is really nice, it's not worthh $114 per day... (how did you come up with $135??)

And as for room charging, I have been allowed to charge up to $1000 per room, without having to ask for it. I'm not sure whether you would be allowed to give them cash in advance in order to artificially "increase" your credit limit.

Well, I wouldn't really be doing it to increase the limit. I would just be paying for it before I spent instead of after I spent it. I think it would help keep me on budget better than "going into debt" for a few days and then paying for it. Perhaps I'm just overthinking and it doesn't really matter. :)

How I got to $135:

Lunch at Yorkshire County Fish Shop
Three Fish & Chips - $6.89 + $6.89 + 6.89
Three Cokes - $2.09 + $2.09 + 2.09

Snack
Three 20oz. Cokes - $2.50 + $2.50 + $2.50

Dinner at Le Cellier
Two Canadian Cheddar Cheese Soups $4.99 + $4.99
14 oz. New York Strip Steak - $26.99
7 oz. Filet Mignon w/cream cheese mashed potatoes - $26.99
Chicken Tenders - $4.99
Two Seasonal Fruit Cobblers - $6.99 + $6.99
Campfire S'mores - $3.99
Tip - $15

Total - $136.36

Oooh - it's for all three of you together... I thought it was kind of a crazy amount for one person... Stupid me! :hammer:

In which case, it would, in fact, be worth it to use the Dining Plan. Even if you'd only be "saving" $20 per day, you would be getting your money's worth by getting to try new restaurants.

I also used to enjoy the "prepaid" aspect of the package deals, before I purchased my AP.

(Side Note: $15 for a tip at Le Cellier - that's definitely low-balling it!! )

As someone else mentioned it may be a bit ont he low side for the tip, but did you factor sales tax into the pricing?

The question becomes does the $20 (plus tax) savings on the meal plan equal or exceed the AAA room discount? (what's 20% plus tax off of a room night at the resport you'll be staying at?) That'll give you the straight numbers answer.

I just picked up the AAA brochure with the package prices in it. It states that you get the AAA discount on the room portion of the packages. Might want to check it out and see if that's true - then you can get the best of both worlds.....

You also need to factor in what other snacks besides soda would you want while at the parks. $2.50 for Mickey bars. Plus the tax on meals. You can easily rack up big bills with the dining plan, since you get appetizer, entree, dessert and beverage all for table, plus counter servie is entree, dessert and beverage and than your snack a day. I believe you could get a child's rate for the dining plan, not totally sure though.

A friend of mine works at AAA and books Disney packages all the time. Just call them and ask what the package rate is if you are a AAA member. My friend always recommends the dining package to folks that are hesitant in getting it. They come back from vacation and thank her for suggesting it, saves lots of money.

I think what you need to decide is if you are a family that likes to eat well or just eat whatever you can afford. We went in December and used the DDP. We are a family of 2 adults and 2 13-year old girls. When we go to WWD we like to eat well. We fiqured that we saved $350 with the plan, and we ate at Boma's, O'hana's, Le Cellier, and Nine Dragons. Good Luck!!

i have to disagree i was going to try the dining plan until a associate i no at the Disney store who visits Disney twice a year told me to go on line and look at the menus and ask your kids where there want to eat add it up u would be surprised, so i did. i was surprised because my kids wanted to eat at pizza planet and were very excited to eat the Tye dye peanut butter and fluff sandwiches at the hotel. i thought they would want to eat at a character dinner ever night not so. anyway i added it up and it would cost me about the same as it would to get the plan as to not. i think no matter where you are in Disney you will eat very well weather its boma's or pizza planet. I'd go with the AAA discount and ditch the DDP i think the plan is good don't get me wrong i just don't think its fantastic. i think its basically paying ahead not really saving $$.

I did not. Maybe that's why it seems low. No matter the restaurant, I always tip 20% on the total, including tax. Always thought I was being generous. :)

I will check with AAA on their packages. Always thought they would be more for some reason, but maybe I'll be pleasantly surprised.

When you book a MYW pkg with AAA, the discounted room price is included in the price. As for tickets, if you want to purchase them from another source, you can, but to get the pkg, you must purchase at least a 1 day base ticket for each member of your party. The $$ amt you save on tickets will probably be small- break down the components of the AAA pkg price and you will probably not be paying much more for the tickets through them.

FWIW, we did the Dining Plan last fall, and we loved it!!! We estimate we saved $250, and we left 2 TS, 5 CS, and lots of snacks uneaten (long story- DD and DH got sick, and we had to cut out of several CS meals and 1 TS meal).
