Ok,I've made this twice before and altho good nothing like the real McCoy..Now Ive discovered 2 ways of the layer..First way is pour the sweet condensed milk over the graham cracker & margarine mixture..Second way is to layer all the ingredients then pour the milk.. So to any chef out there..What is the correct method.?

Oooohhhhhh, I made a stop at Wilderness Lodge last week to get me one of these after reading what you write about it, Hatter and I must say.... it was AMAZING!! Very sweet and rich and I couldn't finish it all myself but I do see at least one stop at WL for these in my future each trip! :)

Whoopee! Just a big thank you all for the answers..I made a tray this morning in this order..First the melted margarine & cracker mixture in bottom of tray ( oiled ) Then the sweet condensed milk, then the flake coconut, then the butterscotch chips, then the chopped almonds, then the chocolate chips..Into the oven at 160 for 30 mins...My best yet..When you slice down the cake, you can see the individual layers, but the taste is friggin awesome.P.S. One thing I did do was add some cinnamon to the mixture..Yummy..;)

I'll be the judge of that. Please send a batch to:

Shookie "the Cookie" Judge Jones
123 Elm St.
Plainville, CT 06062

If you seal in Tupperware and get out to your local FED-EX drop now, I should have it tomorrow.
I will let you know my findings tomorrow.

Thanks!

You probably shouldn't have said
" I need to send a super secret recipe for "magic" bars to my friend overseas" That probably made them a little suspicious as to the contents..
Oh well..NEXT TIME!

When I make them I take a potato masher and gently press down the ingredients - the key being gently - and then the good stuff and the sweetened condensed milk all tend to hold together better....but I put the milk over the crust (which I also press down gently with the potato masher....)

Can I make another suggestion?

Most of the recipes I've seen call for margarine OR butter. Most people who bake only use butter...it just produces a far superior product to working with margarine. I know this doesn't help with the layering question, but it may help elevate the taste and texture of the end product.

That's right - there is a very noticable difference!
