Help I'm Stressing

My June trip planning was going along swimmingly until today!:) Last night our local teachers voted to authorize a strike for April and if they go on strike I may not be able to go until next year!:( My dh probably can't move this year's vacation so if they go over 5 days we will have to rebook for next year. So do I hope my dh can reschedule for August and go without my favorite adrs or reschedule for next year and have a real blow out of a trip add a few days and book more adrs. Maybe even get over to Universal for 2 days? They have until April 18th to figure the whole thing out so I'm keeping my fingers crossed! At least if I have to reschedule Mine Train Coaster will be open!

Did I mention my 10 yr old can extract a square root and do hs frehmen algebra!

I'm not following. One of my kids graduated in the upper 1% of her class, the very bright need little out of their teachers and far less repetitions. She is in a very highly rated university, double majoring and will graduate early with honors as a mathematics and statistics major with a minor in actuary science. When they have a real talent, a vacation doesn't erase that talent. I hate the term gifted, but minds that work that way, they have a gift.

I've been a board of education member and always ripped my kids out of school for 2 week Disney trips annually. In the grand scheme of things I never found it made a dang bit of difference if she missed school or not especially at that young age and could care less if staff liked it or not. If students level off and hit their peak, it isn't likely a vacation is the cause. Often curriculum burying them in a ridiculous amount of work that burns them out. Burn out is a bigger issue than missing a handful of days a year.

Hope it all works out and you get to go, family time is important to our kids overall development and what better place than Disney.

And what will they do if you blow them off? Shoot you?

Just pull those kids out, go on your vacation and have fun.

But odds are that they won't strike. They always say they're going to strike. That's typical union crap. They rarely do. And if they can leave, it doesn't mean you cannot. :)

Lol, tell them you're going on strike at the end of the year. WDW-CIO. :D

Put him in private school while the teachers are out on strike. He still gets his classroom days and the teachers still prove that they are causing harm to the students education by striking during the school year.

See we board members can tell ya anything. They can put anything in policy but that doesn't mean all policy has merit and it might not even be in the policy book. I never, ever asked. I told them or I just picked up the phone and called them in sick when they reached High School when I didn't want to deal with 16 teachers for 2 kids. Honesty and asking for permission will get you no where and it is highly over rated.

Plus if the board could keep their teachers from striking they would not be putting you in this situation. So the other option is: 'sorry, air and hotels booked, beyond our control, sorry the professionals couldn't come to terms, but that is on you guys, you put us in this situation.'
See ya in the fall......

Best answer yet!

Put the blame on them instead of defending your actions.

Maybe a call to the school is in order. Let them know you have a trip planned and there's no backing out. They better make an exception to their policy as far as the amount of days being missed. I'm sure you aren't the only family in your school district that has a vacation planned. Geez you do the right thing by scheduling it so they don't miss school and they do this!

Thanks again to all of you! Fingers crossed that they will fix this in time for me to go! I will keep you updated when I know more which probably won't be for about a month while they yell and scream at each other over such a small amount of money!

We have taken our oldest out of school for WDW a couple of times when she was younger with no issues (she's in private school, so the only real issue is her being able to keep up with work). The last time we did it she was in 7th grade, and it was a mistake. We only took her out for a few days, but she missed several tests and fell behind. It caused her problems for the rest of the year, so we won't be doing that again.

When they're in elementary school I say go for it. Every kid is different, but when they get older it gets much harder to justify, at least for us!

...and this is why in my school system, teachers are not allowed to strike. That absolutely sucks. August is a nice time to go. The crowds tend to be lower, but the summer activities continue. We go in August every year.

Well Figgy this is a truly sorry situation!:( To wait a month to find out is heart breaking as well! I hate to say it but I would take the boys out of school for the last few days, as long as they were not missing any important testing. If it were me, I don't know if I could wait a year. Makes good sense though! Keep us posted:D

Take our friend, Hatters, advice and drink up! The pixie dust is flying:p
I agree. It's ridiculous for the teachers to be striking. It would mess everyone up. I know for my system, there's a way to make up testing later in the summer. My one friend missed the last couple of days our Freshman year of high school and she just came back to make up her finals later. Not like the last few days are ever important...

Right now the 800 Service and food service works are on strike at my DDs University. Managers are trying to cover everything but it isn't going so well. Breakfast wound up being Biscuits and gravy and they forgot to make gravy and buscuits were not cooked completely. Not exacly the balanced menu that is normally served and room and board is almost $6000 for the semester. Normally you get more than bread and canned fruit cocktail for the $8.50 breakfast.

My DD is taking it in stride, their contract was up at the end of last Spring Semester and now it is Spring semester without a contract. Sometimes workers have to do what they have to do. She appreciates the mechanics, food service and cleaning staff so she is living through it and understands their need to strike to get movement. Likely this should do it. She did laugh when she saw upper management trying to clean the dorm bathrooms.
