I went to DL in 1999. I saw California Adventure being built. But, make sure to go on Mr. Toad's Wild Ride. It is actually better than the version that use to be at WDW.

Must see Indiana Jones. It is like Dinosaur at Animal Kingdom.

Have fun at Disneyland.:animwink:

I live nearby.

I am not a WDW veteran, but a Disneyland Veteran. Have had premium pass for last three years, been like, maybe 50 tims? (WDW only 3 x...month total in visit time).

Don't do Paradise Pier (I don't think you can anyway...it looks like its in remodeling).

Grand Californian is beautiful, but expensive...and not a really special room (small).

BUT, having a theme park in your backdoor (special entry from there to DCA) is kinda cool!

Disneyland hotel is o.k. Old, kinda...well, fun, but older.

PM me if you have any questions, glad to help.

P.

OK here it goes....

Are hotels worth it..the Disney ones are much more $$

YES. I would NEVER stay anywhere else. We personally love Port Orleans.

Cant miss stuff

Where to start....

POTC
Haunted Mansion
Mission Space
All Firework Shows
TOT
RnR
etc etc.....

Best places to eat

Here are my favorites:

The Living Seas
Mexico Pavilion at Epcot. The indoor sit down restraunt.
Rainforest Cafe
PlanetHollywood if you like movies.

Disney hotels are much more expensive, but IMHO worth it. Maybe to me it's worth it because it reminds me of staying at WDW. The Grand Californian allows you to remove yourself from the real world. This is harder to do at the other Disney hotels as some of their rooms face regular city streets....The GC, on the other hand, has it's own entrance to DCA and is directly next to DTD.

If you do stay off-site, look into Marriot Suites/Homewood/Residence Inn/Crown Plaza on Harbor and Chapman(Garden Grove I think). This complex of hotels has a resort feel to it and has many restaurants within walking distance. Joe's Crab Shack, Outback, Red Robin, Buca de Beppo,Starbucks. Otherwise, most of the hotels just outside of the DLR will remind you of I-drive...

Restaurants......People seem to flock to Blue Bayou at DL. It's much like San Angel in the Mexico Pavilion except located in POTC.
Redd Rocket's Pizza Port in Tomorrowland is good for counter service. Pricey, but good. Salads there will feed two.

DCA--Boudin's at Pacific Wharf has good bread bowls....Taste Pilot's Grill in Condor Flats has good burgers. Corn Dog Castle has the best corn dogs--ever.

For good sit-down meals DTD or the hotels have the best restaurants. Naples and Catal in DTD are very good, but pricey. Ralph Brennan's Jazz Kitchen is also pretty good. Storyteller's and the Napa Rose at the GC are very good. Granville's at The Disneyland Hotel is very good.

Must sees at DL: POTC--longer here. Indiana Jones(like Dinosaur, but better). Matterhorn. Roger Rabbit's Cartoon Spin.

DCA: Aladdin, Check out Flik's Fun Fair(just to see it), Soarin, Grizzly River Run, Golden Dreams, Cal Screamin, Animation Building(just to sit in the main room).

Random tidbits:

For some reason, the stand by line for Splash is always crazy long, so if you're going to ride it , get a FP. Tomorrowland is almost a non-land right now with Space Mtn down and Buzz being built..that leaves Innoventions(boring), Star Tours(dated), HISTA(ok,but you've probably seen it) and Autopia. Toontown is better themed than Toontown Fair is at the MK.

Snow White the Musical just premiered in Feb.--haven't seen it yet.

Believe is good if it is running.....

Best out of the way places-DL--lower level at the Hungry Bear Restaurant in Critter Country. Go way back and sit near the Rivers of America. Nice break from all the hubbub. At Toontown later in the evening, there is a park area. This land(if it is open) is nice later--very quiet. We were just there last weekend and it was the only area that seemed relaxing. DCA--as mentioned, the Animation Building Main Area is nice. The Vineyard area is nice.

If you have anymore questions.....let me know

I was able to tour all three DL hotels on a travel agent seminar. I would highly recommend staying at the Disneyland Hotel. I was there in 2001 and it was wonderful. The border on the wallpaper has one tinkerbell and pixie dust all the way around the room that glows when you turn the lights out. The armoire in the bedroom has etched in wood the original plans for Disneyland. The lights in the bathroom are held up by mickey hands. Those little details excite me.

I also found the Disneyland Hotel to be a lot more spacious than the Grand Californian or Paradise Pier, though these two have outstanding views of the DCA park if you get the right room. And all of the Hotels are very close to the parks. You won't believe how close Downtown Disney, the 2 themeparks and the hotels are to each other.

I really wanted to eat at the Blue Bayou in the Magic Kingdom but time didn't allow. I ate at the Soap Opera Bistro that is now closed which is no suprise here. I would like to try Wolf Gang Puck's restaurant in DCA, but I found the fast food places to have nice, more upscale options if Wolf Gang is out of the budget for your trip.

DO NOT MISS Soarin' Over California!!! I rode it again and again by myself it was that amazing. ( I can't wait until it opens at WDW.) Hope this helps. Have a wonderful time!!!

Well I'm in the same boat as Marijil. We're planning our first trip to DL since being children. I feel like I know so much about WDW and nothing about DL!

I was wondering, I heard Fantasmic is only on weekends. In the off season do they show it Saturday and Sundays? We were thinking of buying AP's with weekends blacked out, but if we could only see Fantasmic on Sunday night (Saturday won't work) maybe we'd go a different route.

I agree DL hotels are SOO expensive. Having said that, we're staying at Grand Californian because it reminds us of WDW.

All the info so far is great!

I don't remember too much from DL when we went but I do remember loving PotC down there(which is really funny because I wouldn't even go on the one at WDW) and I loved the Alice and Wonderland ride. I'm sure you will have a great time and ride them both for me:D .

My 2 cents:

Eat at Blue Bayou. The Monte Cristo is amazing.
Visit the Disney Gallery.
Just enjoy the beauty that is New Orleans Square.
Take the "Walk in Walt's Footsteps" tour. You can almost sense him in the park.

Must ride:
DL
Pirates. So much better it's not even funny.
Jungle Cruise. Lush beyond belief.
Indiana Jones. Greatest thrill ride ever. Take that Spidy.
Matterhorn. A classic.
Big Thunder. Different.
Toad. Just because.
Space Mtn. Oh...nevermind.

DCA
Soarin. Fabulous. Epcot is gonna love it.
Cali Screamin. One of the best, and most beautiful, coasters.
Grizzly. Beautiful, and makes Kali look like a Slip and Slide.
Tower. Worth a try. Hang around and see if they let anyone on.
