Help! Daughter broke her foot and we leave in 30 hours!

Ugh... Fractured foot and we leave for the airport in 30 hours. :( She isn't supposed to be walking on it for at least 3 weeks. Walking boot and crutches with 11 day trip to Disney.

Asking for help with 2 things. First, tips for touring and traveling. Flying on Southwest out of Midway. We are staying at Port Orleans Riverside. Second thing is we are trying to be positive because it won't do any good to get upset. Help me think of ways this can be good!

When you're the leader, you don't have to follow.
Think of all the guilt-free front of the line passes. Head right to the front of the TSMM queue, young lady - and your family too! Score!!
Plus, she'll get lots of stickers.
Maybe Mickey will sign her cast.
And ... maybe Gaston will be nice to her. Or not.

We will be using any front of the line pass and not feel guilty one bit!

While we were waiting at the hospital I had her almost hoping for a traditional cast instead of the walking boot. We talked about how cool and different it would be to have all of the character's sign her cast! She has survived a thigh high before so she quickly got over her disappointment by reminding how itchy that was! ;)

I agree with @PUSH. She's saying she doesn't want a wheelchair, but the chafing and underarm soreness are killers. She'll change her tune pretty quickly.

Look on the bright side. You're flying out of Midway and there is no snow in the forecast. ;)
You should never have underarm sores from using crutches.

The top of the crutch should not actually touch the skin of your underarm.

Your weight should rest on your hands...like I said, it takes some upper body strength to use crutches properly.

If you rest your weight on the top of the crutches you will not last a whole day.

I would get a wheelchair. When I used Crutches I had them one day and the second day I went to Walmart. I was halfway in the store and I was so tired. I told my wife thats enough lets get a scooter.

Go to Guest Services and ask for a Guest Assistance Card, it will help you with assistance if needed. On many attractions it will allow you to use the Fast Pass entrance.

She is a stubborn teenager and says she is not going to use a chair. We compromised and taking the crutches at least. Not worth the battle and figure she will figure out there.
She is so upset, saying she has ruined vacation for everyone. Are there any rides they won't let her go on?

She says that but she will get very sore using crutches..keep the wheelchair in the budget...take teh crutches with you in the parks and have the chair available...after a few hours she will welcome the respite

I was a 13 year old girl the last time I was on crutches. I had such poor upper body strength. I remember it was very difficult for me and I had a lot of muscle soreness because this was a novel experience for my upper body muscles. :)

If you can postpone, do that.

if not, rent a scooter. Plenty of places offsite to get them cheaper...and you can take them all over. The ones you rent in the park have to be left in the park.

I was a grown woman on crutches. It was horrid at first. I just wasn't strong enough. By the time I was off of them, I was a lot stronger! Towels on the tops and frozen peas in the armpits help. Necessity really is the mother of invention.

Two words for next time...travel insurance

We always buy it so that we can cover our butts if something like this would happen. At least that gives you the option to go or not without losing the money. It would certainly make it tough after having taken off work and making all the arrangements though not to mention the disappointment.

No matter what it is going to be awesome and I will look forward to a post trip update!!!

Not sure if you'll read this while there, but go to Guest Relations and get a 'Guest Assist' card. My friend's mother had both knees operated in the months before they left. She got a wheelchair, and a 'Guest Assist' card and they were able to use the 'Guests with disabilities' entrances, etc. and were treated very well. WDW is very accessible, the CMs deal with wheelchairs every day, and during the week there, her Mom was thrilled that she could do and see most everything!

Bummer! Midway should be ok for you guys! It's all moving walkways once you're inside the terminal and SW will give you a preboard if you ask. It helps.
A tip for the arms that the girls I coach use is the mini pillow pets. They are hilariously comfortable.
