Help! Daughter broke her foot and we leave in 30 hours!

Ugh... Fractured foot and we leave for the airport in 30 hours. :( She isn't supposed to be walking on it for at least 3 weeks. Walking boot and crutches with 11 day trip to Disney.

Asking for help with 2 things. First, tips for touring and traveling. Flying on Southwest out of Midway. We are staying at Port Orleans Riverside. Second thing is we are trying to be positive because it won't do any good to get upset. Help me think of ways this can be good!

I got to be quite the expert on using crutches while growing up. I got to where I was faster on crutches than most people could walk...I could even drive a car with my right leg in a cast! (Swing the right leg into the passenger side and drive with your left foot)The bad thing is it takes a lot of practice to become adept at crutches and a lot of upper body strength.

I recommend the wheelchair and take the crutches with you to transfer to ride vehicles.

Go to Guest Services and get the Guest Assistance Card that will allow your group to minimize the queue's to some extent at most attractions.

Sorry to hear that. Best part is your going to Disney and they will be absolutely wonderful with helping your daughter onto the attractions. We took our daughter once after she just got off her walking boot and she ended up in a wheelchair just because all the walking was too much right after she got it off. Anyway, they were fantastic with what to do at each ride. She was still able to do most everything and it really didn't affect the trip as much as I had thought. Stay positive and have a great trip!:)

well, you can tell her this whole trip was an elaborate April Fools prank. To really sell it, get on the plane and go without. This is not the Marines. I will leave a man behind.

Honestly, our last trip I saw more people in wheelchairs/scooters than not. And with it being an 11 day trip you can pace yourselves and still enjoy. My foot is perfectly fine and I would still trade with your kid who is about to do wdw, during peak season, with a gimpy wheel.

Can you rent a wheelchair from an outside place so that you will have it getting to and from the bus and room. maybe check in your hometown and take one with you. the airline will check it at the gate as they do strollers.

She is a stubborn teenager and says she is not going to use a chair. We compromised and taking the crutches at least. Not worth the battle and figure she will figure out there.

She is so upset, saying she has ruined vacation for everyone. Are there any rides they won't let her go on?

She'll be begging for a wheel chair by the time she gets down Main Street USA. I was on crutches for about two weeks last year and my arms got tired after like 5 minutes of using them. I can't imagine walking for miles with them.

Something else that hasn't gotten mentioned, maybe when you get there (or even call sometime before) you could ask if they had a room on the ground level. It would be easier, especially if you are a ways from the elevator.

I agree with @PUSH. She's saying she doesn't want a wheelchair, but the chafing and underarm soreness are killers. She'll change her tune pretty quickly.

Look on the bright side. You're flying out of Midway and there is no snow in the forecast. ;)

roller skates for the good foot and to attach to the cast? Just make sure a member of your party is there to stop her and block her from running into other guests, push her uphill..etc. . However Liberty Square and the cobblestones might make for an interesting experience. :p

The idea of being in a wheelchair is probably embarrassing to her on top of her being in the cast. But her arms are going to be killing her as the day goes on. I'd say to reserve the wheelchair just in case so its there when she gives up on the crutches.

Called POR front desk. Just love Disney! They said they have some chairs available and we just have a hold put on our account that is only charged if not returned. She said she was sending a message to the room assigner herself to make sure we get 1st floor close to main building as possible.
Been trying to cheer her up because she feels so bad that she feels she 'ruined' vacation for everyone. No tears of pain, only guilt. I told her we miss the days of piling everything in her stroller and now we can hang the heavy backpack that no one wants to carry on the back.
She also felt better hearing from dad. We are separated with him living out of state. Once a year he pays for us to go to WDW and have family time for her. (I can play nice for a week at Disney ;) ) anyway she was scared he would be mad at her.
Any strategies for touring the parks on wheels?

She wa refusing to use the crutches too! She broke both bones in that leg 4 years ago requiring casts from Easter to Fourth of July. 1/2 of that in a full thigh high cast. She knows the agony of crutches.

I think the idea is starting to sink in and our good friend, her adopted 'uncle' is a CM and has been talking to her making her feel better. That and hearing a loud crack when she tried to take a step without the boot kinda drove it home. ;)

Think the compromise will be to just half walk/limp to transfer from the chair.

Another thought. Rent a wheelchair at home. We are from Northern IL and we have tons of Medical Supply Centers that rent. They even have electric ones for about $100 a week. It will be cheaper, you will have it at the resort which is huge. As time goes on she will likely become more and more tired. Speaking from experience when my DD was in a Boot and we stayed at AKL.

Good luck you guys! I would definitely do the wheelchair. Or at least let her know its an option when you get there, since she's refusing right now. lol
