Hey all,

I'm attending the non-equity dance audition 9 am on Oct 1. For anyone who's been to a disney dance audition, what is to be expected.
I hear there's a ballet combination first, but I also hear rumors that they make you do specifics (pirouettes, fouettes, etc..). Just wondering what they're looking for. Do I need to bring tap shoes as well and is it a musical theatre tap or rhythmic tap.

Thanks so much and as much detail as possible is appreciated!!

I think.... that you're a little confused with the audition types... :D Basically, there's no such thing as a "non-equity" dance audition. If it is not equity, then it won't be called dance. And in all reality, it really isn't dance- it is movement, just like they call it. At my first character audition the "movement" combination was super easy- a lot of ball changes, arm movements, box steps, etc. They asked a few people to stay and learn a second combination, and that one wasn't much harder- it was more of a jazz/hip-hop combination. When I went to color coding down in FL, it was similar- first combination was super easy, and the second one had a little more technique, but I think the hardest thing we did was a pique into a tour jete, and possibly a pirouette (single, en dedans). Definitely no fouettes.....

From what you described, I think it is probably an equity audition. And I think they hold them around the 1st of every month so that would make sense too.....

I will also add that you should learn as much about the audition as possible. Is there a contact you can call/email who can answer your questions? Finding out what sort of dance will be covered is crucial, so you will bring the correct shoes, etc. You might also want to brush up if you're weaker in one discipline.

Some adjudicators are very particular about dancewear, so you should probably check on that.

Since it's for a paid position, there probably isn't a fee involved. Is there a contract to be signed on site? Do you have to show proof of insurance? (Most insurance benefits do start for 3 months)

Also, if the audition is at 9AM, you might want to find out exactly what that means. I recently worked registration for a ballet audition. 8AM was the official starting time, but that allowed for registration and warm-up. Have they also allowed for warm-up/paperwork, or should you be arriving earlier. And if so, how much earlier? (I didn't appreciate arriving at 7AM to set up and being met by dancers/mothers who expected me to sign them in.)

And this goes without saying.; the names of the dancers who left in a huff/ major meltdown when not initially chosen were removed from the call back list. Those who were able to keep a positive attitude despite their disappointment might yet be in the production.

Thanks!!

But, I'm still a little bit confused with kcw's response. The audition site said Dancer's open call (Usually when I hear open call I quickly assume non-equity lol, my bad). I am looking for the dance audition that is for going into an equity show such as Beauty and the Beast, Dream along with Mickey, etc. Is this audition for this or is it like a regular CP audition which gets you parades and other stuff like that. Sorry to be picky lol, through all the auditions I've been through, I feel this one is the most confusing to even figure out lol (paranoia lol). Thanks so much for the responses though

OK- I was assuming you were looking for an audition that was non-equity, meaning not for an equity role..... but I think now you mean non-equity as in not open to strictly equity card holders....? right??? If so, then yes this audition is open to anyone, even those without their card, and it will be for equity positions such as DAWM, FOLK and B&B.....

and to go back to your orginal question.... I think that they do start with a ballet combination, and then cut some people, and then possibly a jazz/musical theatre type... and someone told me that at one audition after maybe like the third cut they were having some people try some lifts (for the birds in FOLK).... so I would think that it starts off more generalized, and then gets down to specifics as they cut people.... sorry to add more confusion!
