We're stuck on an Algebra problem:

If Captain Hardtack is 3 miles or more away from shore, he is in International waters, otherwise he will be in Spanish water. Is he in safe territory?

>>> How do I show my answer using algebra???

Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!

You're missing information. You've not said what his location is relative to anything; therefore it cannot be solved without making something up yourself. Are you missing something? Is there some picture you're not seeing?

Let x = distance from shore.

Use the equation y = 3 - x

If y < or = 0 then she is in international water
If y> 0 then she is in spanish water.

Either way I think she's lost. Don't the spanish measure in km?

It's a trick question! Hardtack isn't a Captain. He's an Admiral.

Or, more simply, if x >/= 3 he is in international water
If x < 3 he is in Spanish water

(Damn PHD's make everything more complicated);)

I'm a chemist not a mathematician, I'm supposed to make everything more complicated (or at least that's what my students say). I always show them the more complex way first then let them try to figure out the easy way. :hammer: :animwink:

Can it be solved using linear algebra? I can do that! Oh, the joys of taking high school math in college.
