first...I'm very sorry for reminding everyone of this filth that was on TV the other night... but this headline got my attention

"Did the VMA's hurt the Disney brand?" - look at all the child stars that have been in trouble before... sure a few of them started at Disney...but I think it's hard to make a connection that Miley's ummm...performance (and I use that term very loosely) hurt Disney in anyway.

When she left Hanna Montana she became a total mess...and last I checked is not tied to Disney now...but reporters still make the connection. So why do things like this still show up in the headlines?

Every time a "past" Disney star gets into trouble or there's a sinkhole in Florida... the word "DISNEY" always pops into the headlines.

Is it simply because this (like it did to me) gets people attention or sells more newspapers? ugh...

what are your thoughts? Does this stuff annoy you all too (not just the performance but the word "Disney" in every headline whether it's associated directly or not)

Anyone who was ever associated with Disney gets a big mention whenever something bad happens because Disney is supposed to be the Ultimate family friendly brand.

Lee Thompson Jackson who committed suicide was on a Disney Show that ended in 2001 He has since been in dozens of movies and tv shows including being in the main cast of Rizzoli & Isles for 3 years but the first thing most news outlet went with from his career wasn't the successful show his was on for 3 years before his death but the Disney show that ended over 10 years ago.

You essentially answered your own question. It shows up in the headlines because a Disney background is newsworthy, particularly given her current behavior. If she had instead got a start at the local community theater, that would never be mentioned.

You know, if you think you have so little talent you have to resort to "sex sells" in order to get attention, I think it's time to give it up.

I don't think it hurts the brand, but you're right, that's the first thing reported, "former Disney star, __, posts nude photos of self and was arrested for having illegal substances." I think it's probably more due to the celebrity "machine" and the things children are exposed to than something inherently Disney does to create these train wrecks.

Seeing Miley act the way she did wasn't so much shocking as it was sad. It actually broke my heart to see this.

I never thought she was that good of a "singer" anyways... her tv show was pretty good though (not all because of her though)

It actually was Lee Thompson Young.

I don't think her performance was that shocking. After all it is the VMA's and on par with "too sexy" crap videos they show on MTV/BET these days. Unfortuately it's a sign of the times. (Remember back in the day all the hubbub of Madonna performing in her pointed boustier and grabbing her crotch?) She didn't sell her soul to Disney. From a PR standpoint it's true, it gets people talking about Disney and Miley.

Frankly, I don't think the "Disney brand" can be hurt. They no longer have that wholesome image and are kind of well known for sleazy stars now. I don't know what happened at the VMAs (and I don't want to know), but I doubt it is worse than anything else that Disney has associated itself with in the past.

You essentially answered your own question.

I see the issue as how many little girls were/are exactly using Miley/Hannah as a role model. Although she is not in the Dis branding anymore her reputation from there and those who look up to her from that time period will always associate it to her.

She is trash. She is filth. My TV had to go to the doctor yesterday to be checked for herpes after displaying that.

They like it because it makes headlines. "Former Disney Star Turns in a Controversial Performance at the VMAs" would turn more heads than if it didn't say "Disney Star". But they never credit Disney for the successful careers.

I don't think Miley will have any effect on the Disney brand. She has made a point to do as much as possible to separate herself from Hannah Montana and Disney have cut their ties with her as well. She isn't now and should never have been considered a role model to young girls- she's a performer. Young girls should be using the actual real life females in their lives as their role models.

She is very misguided and I read today that she's bragging about getting more tweets a minute than the super bowl black out. It doesn't even phase her that the overwhelming majority of those tweets were negative.

My problem with the performance was that is was just really really bad. She was pitchy and can't dance to save her life. I didn't find it the least bit "too sexy" there wasn't a sexy thing about it. If that's the kind of performance poor Liam Hemsworth is subjected to when the lights go out I really feel sorry for him. blah!

From Huff Post -

During the act, Twitter exploded with commentary about the performance. One topic that gained major traction was a photo of Smith and his kids, Jaden and Willow, supposedly reacting to Cyrus. Their faces of shock and horror appeared to say it all.

The image was picked up and shared by outlets like Buzzfeed, Us Weekly, Business Insider and Yahoo! News. However, it turns out the Smiths weren't reacting to Cyrus at all.

The MTV audience cam, which was focused on the crowd all night, shows the Smiths were actually reacting to Lady Gaga's opening performance of "Applause." A look back at the feed also shows they weren't even too shocked by the 27-year-old pop star's scantily glad dance. Jaden's confused look was just some intense concentration. Willow's open mouth was caused by her gum chewing. What looked like a gasp was actually just a nose scratch.
