Having computer problems, help.

I'm trying to download Disney attractions and music from internet sites to create CD's to listen to. I just got high speed internet this week, so I never tried until now because it was too slow. My problem is that when I click on an item, be it audio or video to see or hear it, a window on my computer pops up and forces me to download it to one of my drives in order to listen or view it. My question is, why can't I just click on an item and listen to it, without cluttering up my drives with items I might not want to download. At work, I'm able to just click on these items and listen to them right away without waiting, or being forced to download them to a drive. I have a Sony Vaio (less than a yr old), and windows xp. I'm pretty technically challenged, when it comes to this kind of stuff. Just wondering if anyone has any ideas regarding this. Thanks for any help.

i have had this problem on my xp machine as well. from what i have seen, although i haven't researched it, my problem is because xp can't verify that the program doesn't contain a virus so it makes you save it to allow a virus scan before it will allow you to execute it... (executing directly from the site doesn't allow you to scan it and ensure there is no virus)

like i said, i haven't researched it at all, and i don't know if there is a setting that you can change to work around this or not, but at least that is a possible explanation for you...

if you want to make it easier for you to remove the unwanted saved file, try creating a special file for you to download to, when it asks you to save the file browse your files and save it to that special file you created, also if you have Norton system works you can use that to remove tempoary files downloaded for vewing.

On the issue of virises I would take that seriously, I some how downloaded a virius , fortunatly it wasn't a worn so all it did was erase my boot sector which I easily recovered from, but saving a file is the best way to avoid a virus on you home sytem untill you scan it for virusis

I believe that is because the audio or video whatever it is isn't STREAMING...

which means you can't just listen to it w/out a download...

you have to download for everything,

especially if you want to make a CD.

the only way for you to make a CD is to have an mp3 on your hard drive and then and only then can you rip it to a cd-r/w.

If I gather you are trying to make a CD, you must first download it, and then when you have finally put the mp3 or whatever on a CD THEN you can delete the original, downloaded file off your hard drive.

If all you want to do is LISTEN to a song, save the file to your Temporary Internet File folder in the WINDOWS folder of your hard drive, where it will deleted as it is Temporary after some time, or you can manually delete it and all other files in that folder clicking a button on the Options pop-up panel off IE.

It's discussions like this that make sit here on my Mac and say "Thank God". I have to put up with a PC at work, so I appreciate your pain. But I come home to my Mac with its seemless integration of these sorts of functions and ease of use, and I am thankful. Now watch as I get flamed by the irate PC'ers. Guys, I mean no disrespect: I know all the reasons you buy PC's and use Windows. I know all the arguments about software availability, Windows dominence, and hardware cost. I don't care. But I have been using Apple computers longer than most of the posters on this forum have been alive ( my first was an Apple IIc in 1983). Macs are just better. Don't forget Steve Jobs and Pixar (yes, I know they have a lot of Silicon Graphics machines over there, but every employee has a Mac on their desk) - something that has certainly helped Disney's bottom line over the past few years. If you want real plug and play, with no hassles - buy a Mac

Yea! Another mac user! Good words to hear, and I agree with everything you just said--well put.

We had an old Apple IIgs, and I think at one point a IIe. My grandad had one that was the *ahem* all green screen. What a blast!

Gotta love Apple!

Nut4Disney: Here a few thoughts from a fellow Vaio owner also collecting music for CDs. Now that you have high-speed Internet, you might as well download the files anyway, because it only takes a few seconds, and you can kick out what you don't want. (Make sure you right-click the file and select "Save As," and put it in the folder you designate, or it will disappear into the bowels of your "temporary internet folder.") I've found that waiting on a streaming player to load (like Windows Media or Real Player) takes just as long as a download, and slows your overall computer speed.
Also, there are lots of good streaming Disney stations at www.live365.com (including mine!) that broadcast in near CD quality. Do a search for "disney" and look for a station with a T1/Cable/DSL stream. You may want to consider a minidisc recorder (I love 'em) which can record streams right off the computer.
Also check out the thread here about the Disney music FTP. It's a good place to share mp3s.

Thanks RadioAndy for the advice. As far as Live.365 goes, I've been listening to that everyday for a couple years now.:sohappy:
