Another reason for law books?
The original storyline for the Haunted Mansion was that You/The Guest are entering the Mansion for the reading of Master Gracey's will (possible reason for law books, plus if he had that much money wouldn't it be logical to know what laws protect you especialy from crazy relative's (the 3 hitchiking ghosts), mistresses (madame leota), and kids out of wedlock (little leota)). Anyway, the story goes that if an aire is not found the "staff" (butlers and maids) get it, and that's why they are so mean/rude to guests. You probably all knew that but I just wanted to throw something else out there. I've never heard of him being a lawyer even with those books in the library.
