JK Rowling wrote 2 supplemental books that are supposed to be Hogwarts text books. One of them is titled Fantastical Beasts and Where to Find Them. Newton (Newt) Scamander is the "author".

From EW -

David Heyman, who produced all eight of the original Harry Potter films, confirmed that he will be producing the film, said that Rowling hasn’t turned in a finished script just yet, but that “Jo is at work” and tremendously excited about the project. “She’s not doing it for any other reason other than she loves the world and she had a story that she wanted to tell,” he said.

When asked about which creatures we might see in the film Heyman demured. “We follow Newt on his adventures,” he said, grinning.

The producer said Rowling has no shortage of plot ideas for Fantastic Beasts because she knows Newt Scamander’s history so thoroughly

“It’s incredibly exciting,” he continued. “She doesn’t have to go back to this world, but something pulled her back. This is not Harry Potter. This is not Harry, Ron, and Hermione. This is a separate story within a universe related to the Potter universe.”

“The fact that she’s going to this world means there are stories to tell,” he said. “When I was doing the Harry Potters, what was clear to me is that Jo’s knowledge of this world is infinite. What you read in the books was just the surface of her knowledge. She had notebook upon notebook of stuff. I would call her and say, ‘What’s the sixth use of dragon’s blood?’ and she’d have it at her fingertips.”

“In the fifth film, I think it was, we had the Black family tree,” he recalled. “I called her, and literally 20 minutes later I receive this family tree, via fax in those days, with a hundred names and about six generations with birthdays, death dates, marriages, all figured out. She knew it.”

I am excited for this. :)

Not to be negative but I hope they do not "Hobbit" it to much. LOTR movies were excellent and then came The Hobbit, no way the book is 3 movies. I think it is making the Hobbit movies subpar in the storyline department. But in that case the J.R. is deceased so I can cut them some slack.

The Potter J.K. is alive, she can write new material. I would hope it to be set in the same world but different characters, maybe a different school even.

Either way I am seeing it :)

They stretched out Hobbit for one reason...money.

They spent a lot less care with this script then they did previous ones. He's trying very hard to make it fit in with the later movies, and is stealing content from Simellerion, as well as flat out making up stuff.

I...am not a fan of them. Though, I'll go see the third one when it comes out. The movies are too long, the characters are largely not interesting...

But, I'll still go see it.

I agree, I hope Potter does not go this route. Too much possible new content to do that!

Potter can't go that route as "Fantastic Beasts and where to Find Them" is a encyclopedia of magical creatures. It doesn't have any story at all. From what they have released the movie is about Newt's adventures to track down these magical creatures and study them.

I'm also interested in the fact that the story starts in New York. I want to see how the rest of the Wizarding World works. Even if it is in the 1930s' We only get to know the British Wizarding World in the books/movies. Although they do give us small hints about the differences in Wizarding culture around the world. This should be a world spanning book based on where all the magical creatures live.

I am surprised that no one has posted this, but word from WB is that this is going to be a 3 movie trilogy.

It is such a shame Universal put all it's eggs in a dead franchise. 3 years from now, no one will even remember who Harry Potter is.....was. If only Universal had something fresh like Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs to exploit.

Potter was a fantastic book series, the movies could hardly compare. This new series has nothing to do with Potter, so we'll see it had anywhere near the same pop.

The TV show? NOT worth watching. I mean I'm glad Agent Coulson is alive and all, but the TV show is missing something....
It's getting better every episode, start with Tahiti and it is finally hitting it's stride. Last 3 Episodes have been awesome and there is some Winter Soldier crossover.
