When you dead head the old buds just use your finger nails, don't use a clipper. You may damage the new buds. I use Miracle Grow on everything ( in and out) except the Rhododenrons and Azaelas (same family). They like acid so I use MirAcid. I live in the woods so we have a lot of ferns & wild flowers. One year I spent $200 and put in all sorts of bulbs...very expensive squirrel and rabbit food. The deer eat the trees.
I have a great pic of my Favorite rhododendron tree ( almost 3 stories tall). I'll see if I can find it. I dead head as many of the blooms I can every year.

Ps. Couldn't find the one I wanted, but this is the same tree.
