Halloween Horror Nights Review

This year I went to MNSSHP three times and didn't get bored because it matched my expectations. HHN I left two hours before closing. Just didn't deliver the scares for me. I guess I expected something totally different after watching so many Youtube videos from Inside the Magic and others. I'd happily mail you my Frequent Fear Pass. With Express added!

What did your kids think of the two events?

Off topic, but what do houses run in NY? I have some friends who started a local haunt down here, and price point has been a discussion.
Full price from $25-$35. You can often find discounts. And that's in Manhattan. Killers 2 Nightmare was very good this year. I paid $25. I'm going to check out Jeckyll and Hydes new haunted house next.

I do not have kids .

I've never been to MNSSHP, I thought it was for kids? What's it like? There is trick or treating, fireworks, face painting, and a parade correct? Seems like a waste of time really for grown ups. I mean at least Disneyland has the Nightmare overlay and Ghost Galaxy which are both outstanding attractions that everyone can enjoy.

I've been going to HHN every year for the past 12 years and love the event. I even travel to the Hollywood event as well, and plan on attending Singapores within the next 3 years. But I guess the best halloween event in a theme park 5 years running is more my as well as everyone not addicted to pixie dusts thing.

Did I mention I LOVE HALLOWEEN HORROR NIGHTS! ;)

MNSSHP is for kids in the same way as WDW in general is. Kids at heart.

There is a special parade, Villians show, Hallowishes fireworks, special snacks, decorations, people in costume, singing ghouls, mansion bride performing. Very fun event for all ages.

I also enjoy very scary Halloween events. Which is why I didn't like HHN. I came home and went to this. Much better and scarier. http://nightmarenyc.com/?gclid=CIuh4KWppLoCFU1gMgodPVcA6g

The fireworks are incredible--best outside of the NYE show and the (now defunct) Pirates & Princesses show. Even if you just see them from one of the hotels, I recommend doing it if you get a chance.

The parade is essentially for kids, but the Headless Horseman riding the route at the beginning is a very cool effect. There are Mansion and PotC themed floats, which appeals to the Disney geek in me. As for trick or treating, I eat the good candy and still have a giant bowlful left-over to hand out Halloween night. Generally lines aren't too bad for rides; if you're an out-of-towner, probably the most fun way to see the park. A lot of villain meet and greets, too, if you're into that sort of thing.

Otherwise, for me, the event is all about the people-watching. Guests get very creative with their costumes. And if you go early enough in the year when CMs get a discount--well, CP girls have some very liberal interpretations of what a Disney princess should look like. ;)

It's really an apples and oranges comparison, two very different events. I always get a CM discount, so I pay like $40, wouldn't go much over that. but worth it for a fun night once a year with friends to me.

Two local haunts down here are getting $15 for at most a 10-minute experience. That seemed kind of pricey to me considering I'll spend roughly 20 nights at HHN for $90.

I know things like fear and enjoyment are highly subjective, but what in the videos looked better than the actual houses? Because, to me, this is the best house line-up at HHN in a while. The street scare zones are lacking this year, but most of the houses deliver for me.

Is $90 to go anytime a local rate? I paid $195 or so for a limited pass with express. Frequent Fear.

All of the houses to me looked better on video. What they don't show u is the flawed basic setup that never allows u to get scared.

As I said, I can not be scared with employees standing right in front of me staring at me to make sure I behave and move along. You can not suspend reality. Imagine watching a horror film where a face pops up in the scary parts to make sure you don't touch the screen and then tells you to fast forward.

And the parade of people going through all at once is ridiculous. I will never go to an event again that does that. Not scary. You can't be afraid in a crowd while watching the actors pop out and scare in front and behind u then watching them hide.

And I also imagined incredible movie quality sets because this is Universal! The quality wasn't much better than my local houses.

The videos didn't show any of this.

For the local houses I've seen $10-15 for a student theater ones, $12 for one in an abandoned army base. The ones in Manhattan that cost $30+ are high profile attractions that last for 20+ minutes not including waiting. I paid $45 for one in Philadelphia, but it consisted of 6 different houses that took about 5-10 minutes each.

I've only attended the Hollywood HHN once and managed to get there on a less busy day. I think that is the key to enjoying these attractions since I had a blast. However I would not travel to Orlando solely to attend the event due to NYC and PA having houses that can rival HHN's effects.

It's Frequent Fear with Fridays, without Express. [These tickets are like a menu from a 1960s Chinese restaurant.] With my AP, it ran right around $85-$90. Because an AP can buy multiple tickets, never really looked into other rates, but I think the only "local" discount besides an AP is a Burger King cup.

Ouch, we will be going the 26th. I bought express so just maybe it won't be to bad.
We went this past Wednesday and I was amazed at the crowds- we bought Express Pass so that was handy. Still had to wait 30+min for Walking Dead house. No complaints from me, I loved it!!! The experience is what you make of it. Yes it is loud, crowded, people drink a bit too much, but WHO CARES????? My lil family had a great time being together and "herded" through the houses.

pretty much sums it up-we went to MNSSHP when my son was 3 and 4. I will not pay to ever go again. Clearly it is an option if you want some "halloween spirit" without the creepiness and scares- but I would NEVER go if I didn't have a kid. Hallowishes is nice- but frankly just eat dinner at the Cali Grill and watch from there :) Like you, I LOVE HHN and am already anticipating next year ;)

I want to go back to this year's just to do CITW again. I really liked the film and I think you have to to really appreciate the detail in this house. I think it's the only time I think waiting 90 min in line was worth the wait.

Oh, another thing, I did want to ask what Uni was thinking making the AWIL puppet come so close to guests in that house. I have a feeling there had to be some issues with freaked out guests punching it or something, we know the HHN crowd is a bit more, um.. "rowdy".

Sounds like a personal problem to me. Tell me something: do you go around looking for them because the only ones I've seen in the 8 years I've attended were in the Earthquake/Disaster queue (Havoc: Derailed this year) in daylight.

Oh, well. As a scareactor at HHN the last five years, this is the kind of guest I don't mind not coming back.

I've definitely noticed the TMs in the houses, but it didn't distract me or anything. Unfortunately they are necessary. :/

As an actor you should know that they are in almost every room of every house.
And as a paying guest, you are the type of employee I am happy not giving my money too. So it all works out for the best.

Its unfortunate but true. HHN is a victim of its own success and attracts a different crowd than MNSSHP. They are needed in the scenes due to guests getting lost, rowdy, and even violent. The one thing that everyone also has to realize is that they are there to man emergency exits and their primary job is to ensure the safe evacuation of the house, its actors, and most importantly its guests. You do have a few idiots who are constantly yelling to hurry up but for the most part guest services has responded to those complaints.

On another note I will say, HHN craps all over MNSSHP. I know this because Disney won't even attempt to go up against Universal with a more thrilling or even adult oriented Halloween Event. Universal is the best when it comes to horror, they are pretty much the creator of things that go bump in the night. So while some may go pay 90 bucks for fireworks and candy, I'll be in line for America's top Halloween Event.

And to the scare actors, who each and every night give it their all you rock!!
