Guest of a DVC member- What am I allowed to do as a non-owner?

My team mate is a DVC owner at SSR. He has a 3BR villa for a week over Spring break in March and asked my family (3 of us) to join his family. I've been to WDW very many times, but always on our own reservation. He has added my DW and my name on the reservation. We are all traveling together.
How many "rights" do I have as a guest staying on DVC property? I've heard BLT has opened the Top of the World to other DVC owners. Is that something our whole party could do? Or just my team mate and his family?
I also normally would link my reservation to some of the Disney online/app things. Since I don't have the reservation, I don't know how to do that.

I'm honestly not sure what other "perks" DVC owners might get, but feel free to fill me in. And whether I'd get to enjoy those perks as their guest.

If you are given a "key to the world" it will say on it DVC MEMBER- My childrens keys always do. And that will allow you to get the discounts.
I have not heard that about BLT hope it is true... would be great!
I know you get 10% discount at the restaurant at STS. There is a book they give out called PERKS to all DVC members at Check-In it will tell you all of the current discounts.
Have a great trip :)

You are staying with an owner so you will have the same rights as the owner once you check in. Your room key should say DVC on it and will get you into Top of the World even if you are not with your friend. The one place where you don't get the same rights is some of the DVC only discounts like AP discounts which are limited to the immediate family of the owner.

Thanks 71 and Goof.

That's what I was hoping, but I know it is my friend's purchase and me being the guest. We were all at the race shop today picking reservations for dinners. The trip is still nearly 2 months off and we are getting excited. This will be my first stay at a DVC. It will be nice to see what they are like. We've also always stayed at one of the Bay Lake resorts and taken the boats to MK or the monorail. It will be fun to be on a different lake.

I do not think that just because it says DVC member on your "Key To The World" do you get all the pecks. We where there last Oct-Nov and several people staying in my suite could not get he DVC discount when purchasing items at Gift Shops. Several times I was ask to show my DVC card as well and often they asked us for Photo ID to make the discount purchase. We had never had this happen before this trip.

If you are staying with a group that are DVC members you are entitled to all if not most of the same benefits and this includes access to BLT Lounge. Most benefits and member access areas you must be with a DVC member in your party with a DVC member ID. Hope this helps :)

I think that technically the merchandise discounts and the discounts at select restaurants are supposed to be for DVC owners only. I think I did read somewhere that you were required to show your DVC member card to get it. I think it depends on the cashier you get. I have gotten discounts with just the room key, but it's not guaranteed. For the lounge at BLT they just looked at my room key the last time I was there. Either way if you are with an owner they will let the whole party in.

we just got back this past Sunday and while we did not stay on points this trip, we did use our DVC card for discounts in the gift shops. it is my fathers' membership and we only had 1 cast member that asked specifically that he had to pay for whatever we were buying even though he was standing right there with us. thought it was kinda odd since he was with us, but she would not take the money from my sister and insisted that he had to pay for it. everywhere else, no problem at all.

I thought you needed your member ID card and also a photo ID in some instances. I know some friends who went on a friends points and also some who have rented and couldn't get any discounts because they didn't have the card. They are not members so they didn't receive the perk. It makes sense.

You are correct you need a photo ID and DVC member card to be able to get the discounts.

Just want to echo other recent posters--the DVC member ID card and photo ID are typically needed for discounts these days. It used to be that the resorts printed "DVC MEMBER" on all room keys for individuals staying on points--both members and non members alike. I do not believe that notation appears anymore. And even if it does, Cast Members have been more aggressive in asking for the true DVC member ID card to confirm eligibility for discounts.

I stayed on a friends points last june and my key to the world didn't say anything about DVC on it, just my dining plan code, I became a member on that trip and when using the discounts at retail locations my member card and sometimes license were required to verify that I was an actual member.

If you are with the DVC member when going up to Top of the World, you will be fine. The key cards no longer say "DVC member" on them. You would need to present your key card, your blue DVC member card and photo ID. If the member is with you, you can go up as a guest. If the member is shopping with you, odds are you'll get the DVC discount. However, that does vary by cast member.

Exactly...that's how it was when we went in October...

You will be permitted into TOL Lounge as long as the member is with you & can present their blue member ID card. As for discounts, those are available to the member only, not their guests.

From the DVC Member site Portable Perks:

Many special offers are available to Members at various times. Members
should visit dvcmember.com or contact Member Services for important
information. To receive any of these offers, you must present your Disney
Vacation Club® Member ID and current Key to the World Card. Disney
Vacation Club Member discounts cannot be used in conjunction with
any other discounts or promotions. Offers valid through December 31,
2013, unless otherwise noted. All offers are subject to availability,
change, and termination without notice.

On the new MDE site, your friends can share the itinerary & reservation info with you by adding/inviting you as a guest.

You're room key will say DVC, so might be able to get the DVC discounts. In Feb, when we took the kids to the sandcastle club, they asked if we were members, I told them we were staying in a friends DVC and they were happy to give us the discount. We also had this happen at world of Disney store.
