Guest/CM Interaction

I have read alot of posts on here about how rude WDW guests can be with CMs, and how rude some CMs can be to guests. I have not experienced either, TBH, but there was one moment I had during our last trip that could have been worse if either the CM or one of us were rude. My DW, DD and I were at MK, and we were taking a break, sitting on one of those low walls that surround the big planters near Cheshire Cafe/Mad Hatter. My daughter, who's energy knows no limits, was walking back and forth along the top of the wall-not disturbing anyone, not hurting anything, just keeping herself occupied. A CM came over and said something to the effect of "Hi, Princess. Do you mind not walking on there? We wouldn't want you to fall and hurt yourself!" She was not rude, was very nice while saying it, and my daughter immediately sat down. The CM thanked her, and left. Now, if she had been rude to my daughter, or if we were rude to the CM, it could have been one of those "rude guest behavior" moments we read about on here. But, the CM was polite, we understood and were polite, and that was that. How some guests can act rude/entitled towards the CMs, and how some CMs can be rude to guests with no provocation, is something I will never understand, but if people would just calm down, and be civil to each other, even if they may not feel like being civil, would go a long way to eliminating these confrontations that seem to happen on a regular basis at WDW.

I sincerely doubt that the CM's are rude to anyone without provocation. Human dignity is a two way street. Everyone is entitled to be treated with respect whether it be a paying guest or a paid CM. I am one that is a firm believer in the fact that at some point everyone has the right to defend themselves verbally. That unfortunately, is interpreted as "Rude" by a guest that isn't getting their own way. If a few of them were taken down a few pegs on a regular basis, I would bet that the rudeness from both directions would cut down substantially.

I haven't had these experiences at WDW, but I've had enough experiences in every day life that I know how you respond to someone - even if they act in a way that you could perceive as rude - completely shapes the interaction. I'm not perfect about it, but typically when someone approaches me with an attitude, whether I'm at work or at a store or something, my first impulse may be to be rude back, but if I'm able to take a breath and respond in a friendly manner, 90% of the time the situation is immediately defused. It may feel better to give the attitude back - and occasionally I do - but the results of that are always the same. After the brief account is over, I'm replaying the incident in my head, fuming with blood pressure rising, and I'm left in a bad mood. It's not worth it. You can't control how people will act, but you do have complete control over how you respond to the,

I've always had awesome or decent experiences with CMs. People have to remember it's a two way street. Kindness will get you way more than rudeness.

I've never seen a CM being rude before, but I've seen plenty of very rude, entitled guests treating them horribly. The closest thing to a CM being rude to me that I can think of is them just not being overly friendly at times, which I get. I'm sure it's an exhausting and demanding job, and I'm sure I would get tired of saying the same thing over and over again.

I'm glad that you had a good experience with the CMs!
