Procedural question. If they eliminate park reservations but keep the virtual queue, how did that initially work with Rise of the Resistance? I believe when that opened in 2019 there were no restrictions there. Could anyone get the 7 AM virtual queue spots?

You had to tap into the park to be able to get a BG. So BG's didn't really run out as fast as they do now since it depends on the flow of guests into the park at opening.

HS would open like 30 mins - 1 hour before the VQ drop at 7am. Everyone crowds around Hollywood Boulevard waiting for the drop. Then you would hear cheers as various parties secured their spot. Window would stay open for mins sometimes hours, especially since there were "backup BG's" back then. Despite how stressful it was, it was one of my favorite memories of that 2019 trip lol.

I'm pretty sure it was only one single drop at 7am that gave regular BGs and backup BGs.

If they revert back to that system, BGs wouldn't run out within 8 secs anymore and there might be less no-shows later in the day.

We left today after being there since Sunday. Bring your comfortable shoes because we stood online for an avg of 1.5 hrs without genie +. The day we did try out genie plus we could only get 2 rides because the ques filled up so far out. When we were able to get LL , our avg wait time was 50 minutes.
