Think for yourselfer
Television, radio, and even newspapers all supposedly contributed to anti-social behavior and the loss of public morals.
I see this argument quiet often, I find it hard to believe a smart guy like yourself(no sarcasm) can't see the difference. The phones are always available, they are always in our faces, they are a CONSTANT. TV, Radio, newpapers, took work to get involved in. They don't take over every aspect of your life. It's a matter of scale. I find this argument to be akin to a similar global climate change argument I hear from the Dinos are fake crowd. The Earth is always warming and cooling, they say. Well, duh. The difference is, the Earth is now warming at like 8 gajillion times the speed it ever has in the past. It's a matter of scale. Anyways.....

EPCOT SUCKS!!!!

you forgot Vision's in AVENGERS AGE OF ULTRON.

Didn't make the graphic. Just found it and linked to it.
But, you're right. Some of the stones were used in multiple movies and places.

Can you just imagine the awesome ideas Disney is probably thinking of right now:

Energy: Travel through Energy with the Guardians of the Galaxy
Imagination: Travel Through your Mind with Vision
Spaceship Earth: Travel through Time with Dr. Strange
Motion: Travel through Reality with Thor
Space: Travel through Space with Loki/Red Skull
Life: Travel through your Soul with Ant Man
The Land: Soarin with Falcon
The Seas: Nemo

He's a performer who happens to have some engineering training, which which makes him slightly more qualified than these guys...

Despite what we would like to believe, these three are entertainers who act like scientists. Nye is an entertainer who happens to have a technical degree.

Now if you want true scientists who also entertain, you have to go with folks like this...

LN2sy8U.jpg

Unlike Nye, these are credible scientists who also know how to entertain (and who don't act nerdy in a labcoat to try to fit our stereotypical image of what a scientist should be).
Bill Nye studied Astronomy under Carl Sagan. bill has worked for NASA and CalTech Jet Propulsion Laboratory. And is a lecturer in Astronomy and Human Ecology at Cornell University. Mechanical Engineering is an applied science.

Someone once told me that "Bill Nye" is just a character, and the real Bill Nye went to Julliard. Cornell only allows him to say he's an alumni to boost recruiting for the school. o_O

For what it's worth, there are actually a lot of ideas they could use with Ant-Man that could fit the classic edutainment model for Epcot. He could guide us on a mission through a "Body Wars"-esque attraction. We could have a nature-based one where we shrink down and learn about how ant colonies and other small creatures live. He could push the limits and go down to cellular or even atomic level where we could learn about the inner workings of a cell and how molecules are formed.

None of these ideas would actually be used, but Disney could theoretically use Marvel for educational purposes.

Dude, as soon as it got to that part in Ant Man where he goes subatomic, I IMMEDIATELY was like "ADVENTURES THRU INNER SPACE!!"

Sorry, got kinda excited about that.

His only real degree is in engineering; the rest is tied to his career as an entertainer. And engineering is engineering - not applied science.

From the dictionary...

Engineering (noun)- the art or science of making practical application of the knowledge of pure sciences, as physics or chemistry, as in the construction of engines, bridges, buildings, mines, ships, and chemical plants.

He did not "study under" Carl Sagan. He took an astronomy class that Sagan taught. I have a number of PhD wielding, "pure science" scientist friends. They do not consider Bill Nye a scientist. He's an entertainer. I scientifically literate one, and one that I do like and appreciate for what he does, but he's not a scientist. (And how did we devolve to this topic?)

Yes, the scale is different but the context of their use is also now different. After half a century of seeking to put as much physical space as possible between each other we are finally seeing a return to urban living. On the larger scale it is hermits calling the villagers anti-social.

Agreed, but as CNN and others don't frequently interview "real" scientists, Bill at least understands the words he's using. I can't stand listening to some talking head trying to explain science when they clearly don't have a clue. Some of the global warming "discussions" or reviews of new findings in medicine are downright painful to watch. Another cancer cure is right around the corner, right?

Well, as an engineer I beg to differ. Science and engineering are two very different beasts.

If you don't use scientific theories when applying engineering designs, then please let me know what things you have built so I can stay out of them. This whole discussion is silly anyway. His defined name is Bill Nye "the science guy". It is not Bill Nye "the scientist guy". You do not have to be a person with the label scientist to be extremely will versed in all things scientific. Most full fledged, in the lab, scientists are egg headed bores that couldn't explain in common terms their way out of a paper bag. Mr. Nye fills a very important and legitimate place in the world of science by making it understandable. Without the common persons avenue to understanding it... science is worthless to anyone other then other scientists.

He's an engineer (you can be both an engineer and an entertainer, they aren't mutually exclusive). Whether or not an engineer is a "scientist" would depend on how broadly or narrowly you want to define "science" though most people probably would not consider engineering as a science discipline.

That said, an engineer would have to use science and be knowledgeable about science to function, so if the question is more about scientific literacy (as opposed to nomenclature) then I would think Bill Nye's engineering background is very significant. It certainly is unduly dismissive to label him as "just" an entertainer as though that means he's not more educated about science than, say, Jenny McCarthy.

 Engineering is pretty much the epitome of applied science. It's obviously not pure science or theoretical science.

Oh, I agree. My point was just that he isn't a scientist, and that most scientists (because that's the nature of the people in that field) would make sure to let you know that. ;-)

I still love that conservative "scientist" who claimed climate change is a "myth" built by liberals, and his proof was that it snowed in his town the earth is not more warm than before :hungover:
