Great Wolf Lodge trip report

We just spent the night at the Great Wolf Lodge down the street from Disneyland. We had a great time. We had a special offer of $200 per night with a $50 dollar food credit. The place is remarkably well themed and is totally geared to kids. It's much better themed than the Disneyland Hotel or Paradise Pier Hotel. It's like a cross between the Grand Californian and Chuck E Cheese. They even have an AA show similar to the Country Bears but probably closer to Chuck E Cheese.

When you check in they give you free wolf ears so everyone had them on. Everyone gets a wrist bands with a RF id chip in it. This makes it easy to pay for food at the water park, parking and merchandise while leaving your wallet in your room. It also acts as your room key. The rooms are new and hold 7 of us. We got a themed room with a wolf den in it. Part of the room is made up look like a wolf cave and has bunk bed.The rest of the room had a queen size bed and pull out couch.

The hotel sells magic wands that make things happen at lots of locations in the hotel. They are similar to the wands you get at the Discovery Science Center's outside dinosaur exhibit. The kids can go on quests and solve puzzles by finding magic objects to point their wand at. There is even a huge AA dragon to battle. Inside the room's wolf den, the kids could make the AA frogs move and light up the vines and moon. Wand operated treasure and magic screens were everywhere even down the room halls.

The hotel has an arcade, glow in the dark miniature golf and a fight simulator ride. Food is the usual hamburgers, fries, chicken strips and pizza but they do serve beer and other alcohol. The food was a little cheaper than Disneyland or Knotts. Hamburgers were $7. There is also a buffet, ice cream parlor, Dunkin Donuts and a regular sit down restaurant.

The water park is pretty big. There are more than a dozen slides, a baby area, a water fort, boggie boarding and a wave pool. There is also a pool outside. We spent most of the time at the water park. The life guards were friendly and kept people in line. The employees were fantastic. The place seems to be doing pretty well considering how full the hotel was. It's a fun place to take the kids on a special mini vacation. Pictures to come.

I don't have kids and this hotel is too far from DLR for me, but I'm curious to know what the rooms look like.

Also what's the bar situation? lol

There's a Great Wolf Lodge here in my town and I still haven't checked it out. Looks like that will be changing soon since that sounds like a reat deal.

Actually the bar situation isn't bad. They have outdoor pool side bar and the water park has one too. The restaurants all serve beer with the fireside grill restaurant serves mixed drinks.

Anyway, here is the wolf den

This is a show with popup AA characters.

It's only two miles from Disneyland however like the Legoland hotels it's pretty much families/kids only. Still, it's a nice alternative to the Disneyland Resort bubble and crappy flea traps around the park for families.

Wow... Never would have expected to see price for Great Wolf that low. The one near us in Texas is generally closer to $500/night which makes it difficult for me to ever justify. Where did you come across rates this low?

GWL pricing is incredibly variable.

The Chuck E. Cheese analogy fits well in terms of setting expectations. Its higher quality than cec, but like if you thought someone built a new cec today and was really trying to make it dimensional instead of just flat walls.

If you have kids from about 5-11 it's fantastic.

When you fill up a hotel room, it starts to be a good value.

A kids birthday sleepover at GWL is the money shot. Two themed rooms... a bunch of extra water park admissions... and your kid is in heaven.

My wife came across a special internet promotion from of all places Zulily. I think they sell women's shoes. It was a one day only promotion so it was really weird. We grabbed the deal and two weeks later we were there for the night. I don't think they are 100% booked but they seem to be doing fairly good business. I do know GWL has a deal for mid August for $150 weekday for that room. The kids are in school then.

Considering a Knotts or Raging Waters waterpark admission is $50 and the water park is free to guests, the more kids you cram in the cheaper it gets. The downside is the waterpark being indoors makes it pretty humid on a hot day. Going in the winter time when the temp is 65-70 degrees might be less humid. Too bad they can't open the skylights.

Same!! I did a 60 day in advance 30% off deal.. and it was still over $400 per night.. for a STANDARD room!!!
Don't go without a discount. Once you add in the $15 mugs (that don't include coffee) and the $50pp Magiquest and gear.. then the game room.. it starts to get crazy. Kiddo's bday/Easter break finally convinced me to do it..but only at a discount.lol

Awesome! Make sure your wife checks her email.. a week or two after our trip I received a bounce back offer at 50% off.. no black out dates!! You just had to book within 72 hours.
I got an amazing deal for 3 nights over New Years Eve this coming winter!!

My son has always wanted to do a trip there during Snowland.. I have never been able to justify the price during that time.. now we'll finally get to experience it.

@phruby Only 2 of your photos are showing up for me (?)

But from the one I can see of the lazy river.. it doesn't look too crowded! Did you guys do the breakfast buffet? I thought it was good, we got a kick out of the Wolf Waffles.

A birthday sleepover would be fine.. but their birthday party pricing is out of control. I've said "No" the past 3 years to my kid on that request..and will continue to say "No." until he stops asking.lol

We smuggled in food and ate in our room for breakfast and then had lunch/snacks in the waterpark food areas. The fish tacos were good. The family fries are huge. Everything else is pretty standard kid stuff. For dinner we ate at the Red Lobster across the street.

Thank you! Great pics!

I think I'm going to bring food next time as well.
I had done the birthday package.. so we did have cake waiting in the room. We never did eat at the ice cream place because the line was just so long!always.

The breakfast buffet was great, the other restaurant (forget the name) had a $2 fish taco special while we were there. Kiddo and his friend ordered those, no complaints. I had regular tacos which were just OK, but did have a margarita which was very good. I would have like Red Lobster much better though!
The line for DD was also constantly monstrous in the morning, and I thought the in room coffee was gross.
One thing I really enjoyed was the pizza.. went with the recycling theme at the resort. The normal sized box folded into your plates on one side, and storage with the other. Tasted good and I liked the idea of the box!
