Some of my thoughts. The negative first, so as to end on a high note.
* The color pallette is a little muted for my liking. I understand Wasteland is supposed to be a dreary place, but the effect is almost too successful. It gets to be a little oppressive seeing so many thinner pools and shadowy caverns all the time. I prefer the color style of the cutscenes to the action scenes, and they depict the same place, so the game COULD be less dark (literally dark, that is) and still tell the same story.
* I could do with a little less "missioneering." Seems like everytime I show up in an awesome new map, I can't take two steps without having a half dozen people bugging me to find some doodad for them. I'd just like to be a tourist for a bit sometimes. Also, it kinda detracts from the "epic" feel when most of your time is spent being a go-fer.
Now for the pluses
* I LOOOVE the sidescrolling filmstrip sequences. I thought they were going to be irritating diversions from the real action, but in some ways I enjoy them more than the action maps. The black and white segments are so crisp, the color segments are so rich, and the music is straight from the actual cartoons. Seeing Mickey bounce around a Steamboat Willie world while "Turkey in the Straw" played in the background made me smile so big.
* The in-park references are insane. I don't want to spoil the game here, but some of the DL/WDW setpieces I've come across just makes the geek in me so happy. And of course, the twisted Wasteland treatment they've all received adds that layer of creepiness we all knew to expect from this game.
* The morality system definitely adds to my emotional investment. I was kicking myself for most of the day yesterday for trading away a mission item for a lousy pin. Not only did I sabatoge my intent to be the completely benevolent Mickey I was aiming for, but I earned myself a hugely frustrating boss fight when I'm guessing I could have made a friend if I'd handled the situation differently! I definitely don't tend to have that kind of involvement with video game characters.
* I think some of the reviewers' complaints about control and camera angles have thankfully been overblown (although I'm not to the end yet, so I might eat my words). There is a learning curve on the controls, and the camera is just wonky and stupid at times, but neither seems any worse than Mario 64 to me, and that's supposedly the gold standard of 3-D platforming.
Anyway, I'm having a blast, even with the complaints. I'm looking forward to finding time to watch the bonus disc sometime...if I can pull myself away from the game.
