Gps - Help Needed

Does anyone know where to get maps for my GPS (Global Positioning System) for DRIVING the roads of WDW?

I currently have a Magellan GPS. Even with the most recent roads update the roads in the WORLD are NOT LISTED! HELP!

I have seen maps for the Orlando Area on a few Disney Related blogs. I have seen them for the Garmin, but not for the Magellan. One was Stonemaps, and I have seen others. Usually downloadable for $20 or so. You can get all the GPS coordiantes from Google Earth if you can program them in yourself. Try Googling for companies, or check a few of the Travel Companies to see if they know. I don't know if they have any way of finding maps like these for thier rental car clients. I just use the free giant green navigation aides posted above the roads. It helps to look over the road system on Googl Earth before you go, and remeber where you resort is, soem of them can be hard to find the first time through. For example, the ALl Stars are found when you follow the "Animal Kingdom Resort Area" signs. and POP is found followinf the "Wide World of Sports" resort area signs. A few more signs would be helpfull.

I got mine here: http://www.mousesavers.com/gps.html

But I'm not sure if she has anything for Magellan.

Unfortunately, the files available at that link are just Points-Of-Interest files. They don't do anything about maps.

That's one thing that I like about my TomTom. I was able to go into it and edit the maps to suit what I needed. In fact, almost all of the roads were listed on the maps, with most of the backstage roads marked as "blocked".

But I went in and fixed a few, especially around the MK toll plaza area. (The turn-around to the Car Care Center was marked as blocked, as well as some of the roads around the CCC) I also moved the icons for POIs to locations that would bring you to where you need to be while in the car, not where they actually are located. (Like moving a hotel's icon closer to where you actually turn off the road, or moving the MK's icon to just past where the toll plaza is, rather than where the park is located or where the middle of the parking lot is.)

I think most every POI is in those files, which will get me from any point A to any point B. Does editing the map just help in that it let's you know the actual names of some roads you would be turning onto, instead of just saying "turn left" for example? Or is there more to it?

We'll be there in a couple weeks, and I might want to look into map editing.

Thanks.

When I drove down there they showed up automatically in my Garmin, but maybe you can just put in a nearby address on Irlo Johnson and go from there. The roads are clearly marked with a lot of signs, so you shouldn't need a GPS when you get in the Disney property. I didn't need to use my GPS at all since there were signs everywhere and it is very hard to get lost.

Magellan GPS....I have a Magellan 4040

cruislovin,

Hello, This is Brian Carotenuto. I'll try and give you a hand here. I have a Magellan 4040 that I have had for the last several months. As far as the "CITY" information, try typing in "LAKE BUENA VISTA" instead of "ORLANDO".

This should work for you. I hope this information helps.

Sincerely yours,

Brian T. Carotenuto

PS: I almost forgot, make sure you have the current version of the software for your particular unit. Go to www.magellangps.com for more information.

I believe what the OP is saying is that the roads themselves aren't programmed into their unit. So that his unit sees WDW as one giant forest with no streets. A GPS unit can only navigate you to a location if it knows what streets will get you there.

On my TomTom, while I can report that a street is missing, and give its' approximate location (like I did for a friend's house on a new street), it doesn't actually *add* the street to my map. It just reports it to the company that they need to research it and add it to their next map release.
What I did was just edit streets that already existed on the map, they were just blocked from all travel (meaning that the unit ignored them while calculating directions).

For instance, Bear Island Road is still listed as blocked, because it's VERY much a backstage road. In fact, there's now a gate at the Western Way end of it to keep out people looking for a shortcut to the MK. But if I *wanted* to, I could tell my unit that it's a one-way road heading south, and it would consider it as a route when calculating a route. (Alternatively, if Disney had these GPS units for their company vehicles, they could un-block all backstage roads and they could navigate freely)
