Goodbye mini, Hello nano

Apple released the new nano which replaces the mini. All the iPods now have color screens other than the U2 edition and they shuffle which has no screen.

Looks sweet....

Wow, hand't even noticed that the mini was discontinued until you mentioned that, and saw that the online comparison chart on Apple's web site no longer had the mini listed.

I could have sworn that both the mini and the nano were in the lineup when I was browsing the Apple store right after the nano was announced, but must have been a hallucination! :veryconfu

Great article here that delves into why the nano replaces the mini

NOOO!!! Now my iPod Mini is obsolete!

Damn, the black Nano is sexy... Me wants one, but me's saving for a TiVo...

I knew that they were working on getting rid of the monocrome screens. The 20 GB with the monocrome now has the color screen. There is no more iPod photo just the iPod which does both photos and music. The only one with monocrome now the the U2 edition which I think they thought they would sell more of. I love U2 but the color scheme is terrible.

I have a 60GB so I am happy with that. If I were a runner or something the nano would be nice but I prefer to tote all my music at once. It is easier than always swapping it out.

Oh, if only I could fit my music collection on a 60GB iPod! :)

As I'm cruising somewhere in the 120GB range of music imported off of CDs, my music collection lives on an external FW drive, and I load the really good stuff on the iPod shuffle or iPod mini I won from the Pepsi promotion this year.

Once they get to the point of having a terabyte of flash memory in an iPod, then it will be time for an upgrade! :D

That is a lot of stuff!

I have currently about 30 GB but I am still uploading. I also have another 37 GB that I downloaded from a server that someone was housing at my office until it got shut down. Though I think some of it is lost as it was in a folder that had some coruption happen a while back to me. I keep it all on an external drive and once it is all in, I am going to back it up to DVD and throw it in my fire safe.

I can fit my entire music collection on my Mini. I only have like 2.5GB... I can't imagine having more than 5GB, really. I would never have time to listen to it. Hell, I don't have time to listen to the 1.7 days worth I have now.

I go in cycles of what I will listen to. I am bad, I listed to the same stuff over and over and then switch out for a while. I also though have music for my daughter on there for the car and my wife's stuff as well.

Another thing is some really good podcasts that I downloaded from iTunes (the are free). One really good one is the MousePod. All about Disney from the parks to the movies, to the music. If you check it out, I suggest downloading all the old issues and go in order of them up to present first. You can delete them when you are done. They are all about 1 hour each and make for great listening in the car.

Wow, that thing is tiny. I'd like one but I'd probably lose it in that bottomless pit I like to call my purse. Or my cat would eat it. Either way it wouldn't last long.

alrighty... I got my Nano today. The apple store is entirely out of the 4 gig, so I took the 2 gig. That should be more than enough for me

Excellent! Is this your first iPod? It should not take too long as the drive size is not so big.

For an interesting read on how much abuse the new nano can handle, check out the Stress Testing part of this Ars Technica review, shows it still playing music after being dropped from a moving vehicle at 50 MPH, being driven over, etc.

alrighty... I just took it out on the town, and got several compliments on it. Sound quality is great, and it works like any other ipod. I'm impressed.

That's pretty interesting- it did better than my HP iPod did- I dropped it once and the LCD screen cracked in 2 places- it still works, but you have no idea what you are listening to....
Now I have a iPod Photo (60GB) and I am taking better care of that one :D

I have the same one. I bought a hard plastic case for it at the Apple store. It has a black rubbery ring aound the edges and clear plastic around the rest aside from the wheel. It only makes it slightly bigger and my iPod look like new. My previous iPod (3rd Gen 30GB) was scratched right away with no case.

I highly recommend the case. Here is a link to it: iPod Case

It does look awesome but I can't justify it while I have my 60 GB photo or my wife's 20 GB which she never uses (gift I regret)...

Did you get the black or white one and how does it hold up against finger prints. The normal ones look so bad on the back.

Thanks- I actually have a case and my other iPod was in a case when it was dropped and the LCD screen cracked- the case has a flip down top so people can't see it's an iPod or anything (it's also padded...Which is why I don't get how my LCD screen cracked)
