Go to the local REAL camera store and try them out and pick the one which is most comfortable to use, And BUY IT THERE the help that a local camera store can provide to a new user far exceeds the few bucks you will save online.

Like the first time it wedges itself and instead of sending it to factory for 6-8 week the local store can usually get it running again.

budget is between 500 and 800. been looking at the nikon d3200 and the sony a65. but other brands are possibilities too. the only camera stores around me are cord camera and midwest photo exchange. then you got the big box retailers like walmart, hhgregg, and best buy. but the prices seem to be set for these cameras across the board

Both of those cameras will do the job; just realize that if you want good photos in dark rides you'll need a fast lens. The kit lenses just won't do. The advantages of the Nikon I think are the almost unlimited amount of lenses and Nikon reputation. The Sony sensor on the A65 will give you higher resolution ( I have the same sensor in my NEX-7) plus with the A65 you get in camera image stabilization ( something not in the Nikon ) which will be of great help in low light situations. The Jpeg engine in the A65 is not the greatest however, so if you don't shoot RAW that may be an issue.

If you want good low light images, a fast lens is a must - which is something to add to your budget.

DSLRs can be cumbersome for video. When setup correctly, and in certain shooting situations they are awesome. But lack of high motion stabilization, poor inboard mics, and lack of continual autofocus can be a problem. So be aware they are not like camcorders.

Skip the D3200 and try and snag the D5300 (just came out) MUCH better sensor. If you can, nix the kit lens and snag a 35mm 1.8 ($200).

I know its a BIT over your budget, but no one ever said DSLRs are cheap :) (Amazon had a lightning deal on the D7100 which I can personally vouch for as being AMAZING for $800..but it sold out really really fast..they may do it again if you want to keep an eye out for it)
