Spielberg/Cruise Beaten by a Cartoon?

The mighty Hollywood pairing of golden boy TOM CRUISE and unstoppable director STEVEN SPIELBERG may have been beaten at the box office - by a cartoon girl and her wacky alien pal.
MINORITY REPORT, Cruise and Spielberg's hotly-tipped sci-fi thriller, took in $36.9 million in its opening weekend in America, according to estimates released yesterday by its distributor 20TH CENTURY FOX. That would put it just ahead of the animated DISNEY flick LILO & STITCH, which debuted at $35.8 million, according to the studio.
Disney and other studios had tracked Lilo & Stitch in first place, slightly ahead of Minority Report.
Studios base their weekend projections on actual ticket sales reported by cinemas for the Friday and Saturday, and estimates for the Sunday. When final numbers come in later today (24JUN02), Lilo & Stitch might edge out Minority Report for Number One.
BRUCE SNYDER, head of distribution for Fox, says his estimates put Lilo & Stitch just $100,000 (£66,666) behind Minority Report, making it too close to call.
Snyder admits, "I'm not claiming Number One. I'm not claiming anything. I'd call it a tie."
CHUCK VIANE, Disney head of distribution, says, "As much as I'd like to go there, I'm not going to. That's not our style. Of course it bothers me. In my heart I know I'm right, and I assume that in the morning, the dust will settle that Disney's Lilo & Stitch finished ahead of Minority Report."
Viane says he thinks Fox has simply erred, and does not believe the studio deliberately inflated its numbers.
Snyder concedes, "Could I be wrong? You bet."
