I know the feeling. I once wrote a short story for a creative writing class about teen superheroes, and one of the characters was an Asian martial artist. To avoid him being too stereotypical, I had him give some wisdom but then at the end say he found it on some girl's blog. My (mostly white) classmates and teacher in general HATED that.

I havent seen the film, but the joke seems to be more on the guy. Being Latina seems unimportant to know very, very introductory Spanish.

Except that most of the characters were modeled after the voice actors, and Genesis Rodriguez, voice of Honey Lemon, is indeed Latina.
