man, i'd love to do some history tutoring for...say 1st graders.

"and the united states was created when the great bricker clan first piloted dragons across the mighty lava oceans out yonder. The brickers used their lazer eyes to destroy the marzilwas, a large dinosaur covered in horns, which were trying to destroy the land. For this reason, we honor the first great bricker who ruled the country in all of our classrooms." (as i point to an image of george washington or lincoln, or whomever's picture is on the wall).

...yeah, i could do some serious damage!

Have to ask...

Where do the little children (you know, the ones WDW is really for) sign up? I still don't like a promotion that excludes children under 6... even though I do not have any, any longer :(.

Wait what?

You cant ask KIDS to do work, even volunteer work. Its against the law, 15+ can volunteer and I imagine for some projects adults can bring kids to help if you contact them and check but Disney wouldn't make this open to kids because they would be breaking federal laws!

Plus WDW is for *all ages*, parents and children alike. The Disney company skews towards kids enough as is these days...

Didn't realize we'd be able to apply the ticket to our AP renewal. Now we're definitely in. We probably would've done it before for the FastPasses, but this is MUCH better!
Really? For renewals not just new APs? Oooh. That's definitely worthwhile!

I have a serious problem with there being 1 opportunity for kids under 10 in the Columbus, OH area, and that one is still 7 and up.

No 6 year olds.

In fact, I could not find one within 80 miles for my six year old.

Exclusion is the first rule of this program.

I was surprised that I couldn't find all that much in Indianapolis (2-3 things if I recall correctly). We're going to end up doing ours in Chicago, and we're glad we registered today, otherwise the 2 kitten petting slots (or whatever they are, Sarah registered), would probably be gone. I'm not saying they won't replenish or add to the listings, but it seems like the listings would be exhaustive from the outset since this has been in the works for a while.

Found one! Only 80 miles away!

6+

Dates December 5th-January 5th.

If you email them today they will respond within 5 days -- or maybe by the end of the opportunity time?!?!?!?

Does anybody proofread these thing???

I hope more opportunities arise beyond MLK food drives or working MLK parades. Some of us have to work that one specific day.

I'm helping kids at the activity table make slime. It took a lllooonnnggg time to sign up for this opportunity. The site was fussy about how many volunteers were needed. I wanted to be a greeter, it said two volunteers needed, good for families minimum age six, register up to eight family members. When I went to enter who was volunteering, my family exceeded the volunteers needed. So now my family of three, is at the activity table. Four volunteers were neede for this job.

The Columbus Library does not want people under the age of 12.

Habitat wants 14+.

The Columbus Zoo, 10+.

The only local opportunities are all discriminating against my 6 and 8 year olds.

I was really excited about this opportunity for my family to spend a day volunteering together.

What a bummer.

Seriously, how many Disney guests from this area go with kids under 10???

20%?

30%?

40%?

At least everybody was guranteed to have a birthday last year. Even if you couldn't make it on your birthday, the opportunity was still there for you to take advantage of the promotion.

I am really bummed and put out by this.

We will be taking out 2 week trip to WDW in November, but we were looking at a long weekend to Disneyland while attending my cousin's wedding. Upgrading the tix to a two day park hopper would save us over $300 on our trip. Kind of a real stinker at this point...

What if I have already paid for my trip and have my tickets, do they have a deal going this year where you get a gift card or something like last year with the birthday?

no gift card-you can either donate your day to the boys and girls club, get mickey ears/trading pin, or a special fast pass to select events

I would think not.

Many people that go to the parks go in a group of two or more. When Disney Parks gave away one ticket, they usually sold another. If a package was already purchased, they would give away one gift card.

If a family of 6 buys a package and gets 6 shopping cards, Disney is throwing away a bunch of $$$.

But, hey, I could be wrong.

The big savings to a guest is that $4 difference from a 8 day to a 7 day pass per person.

This would counter package sales. Wonder how many people will realize that a package may cost them more that a room only with this deal?

Here's the other options:
If I have a valid multi-day ticket or an Annual Pass or Passport, is there anything else that I can receive?
Guests who present a valid multi-day ticket or Annual Pass or Passport may choose from one of the following three options instead of receiving the free 1-day, 1-park ticket:

  • Disney's FASTPASS® Special Exchange Cards for certain attractions for you and up to 5 additional members of your party. †
  • A Special Ear Hat figurine with unique trading pins‡
  • Donate your free ticket to one of the select non-profit organizations designated by Disney Parks:
    • Boys & Girls Clubs of Southern California
    • Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Florida
    • Dreams Take Flight Canada
Plus, you can put your one day towards an AP or AP renewal. (Sweet!)

I was upset about this at first, however, I believe anyone age 6 or over can participate if they have an adult with them in any of the volunteer opportunities. I signed up for one with a minimum age of 18 and it requires you to disclose the information of anyone coming with you to volunteer including anyone under the age of 18. I signed myself and my wife and my 6 year old daughter for a Meals on Wheels program. All of my information seemed to go through just fine but it said it would take up to 5 days to email me back to confirm. So, I wouldnt worry about the minimum age thing too much I can pretty much guarantee you they will find something for your child to do. I would go ahead and sign up. Good Luck!!

I went back and looked again and this is directly from their website: "Please note this opportunity's minimum age for volunteers as stated above. Any volunteers under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian."

It's very confusing but it seems to me that anyone who is atleast 6 years old can volunteer for any of these opportunities they just have to be accompanied by an adult.

We got signed up! After a long time. I was surprised about the different opportunities available... giving blood, working at the local theatre. Very cool stuff. Also, that they only have opportunities for the next 60 days - the they will continue to refresh over the year. I was wondering how they would control it on the first day - 1 million tickets is a lot, but could have all gone on the first day.

The minimum ages are important though for some of them... it has more to do with insurance - like Habitat for Humanity - you can't have anyone under 16 on the construction site, but you could be 6 yrs old in their retail shop. So, some organizations have more than one opportunity with different minimum ages.

Regardless, My husband signed up for Habitat for Humanity on one Saturday and my 6 yr old daughter and I are signed up to pick up trash at a local park on another day. We have a 3 yr old son, so one of us needs to stay with him - that is why the two different days.

Do you knit/crochet?

The opportunities are sorted by zip code, so many of you may not see this, depending on where you search from. I found an opportunity in Northwood, NH (03261) that you can do from home and then send in. It involves knitting/crocheting, and they still need ~480 volunteers. They take kids as young as 9 too. DW is good at that stuff so I'm hoping she can coach the rest of us through it. The comfort dolls need to be done by Feb 14th, so there's not a lot of time to learn.

After 6 hours trying to sign upon the disney site -- i finally made it through to hands on and received an error last night. Frustrated and with 70 openings i gave up. I sent an email asking how to get passed the error as indicated. This morning apparently disney got their act together and put enough server capacity on the site --- i flew through only to find all of the opportunities for my family full. This is very frustrating and extremely irritating.
