Getting to the Grocery Store

For our upcoming Grand Gathering I am very torn between taking ME and then two of us take a taxi to the nearest grocery store or rent a car service that has the complimentary grocery stop. I will have a 3 year old and I am kind of anxious about her not having a car seat on ME. We will be staying at POFQ.

What do you think??

First of all I wouldn't worry about your child not having a car seat on DME. It's a big motorcoach bus, it's not the same as riding in a car or even a smaller bus. Plus if you plan to use Disney transportation your child won't be in car seat than either. That's why I use Disney transportation b/c I don't want to be dealing with car seats on vacation! (And my children always have to ride in their car seats!!!)

You decision should be based on whether you want to rent a car service or take a taxi to a grocery store after you get to the resort. There are also a couple places that deliver groceries to your resort, so that is an option as well! (I'm sure someone on here can give you the links to those stores that offer this service - I don't know how!:o)

You can take the free DME and also get a grocery delivery. Garden Grocer and Gooding's both come highly recommended. This way, you don't have to pay for a taxi or a car service, PLUS you won't have to waste time shopping AND getting back and forth to/from the grocery store. DME and a grocery delivery is a win/win situation if I've ever seen one!

I like NewfieFan's response to you.

There's no such thing as a bus on WDW property that has seat belts. And since there are no seat belts, there's no way to secure a car seat.

If this makes you nervous and decide to take a car service to POFQ, then all you've done is give yourself a car ride to a resort where you can only get places by Disney Transport buses ... buses that have no seat belts! So as you can see, a car service ride to the resort is pretty useless if you are taking the car service specifically because you think it's unsafe to ride in a bus without a car seat ... know what I mean???

Overall, occupants in large buses are safer (less prone to injury) than occupants of smaller vehicles such as cars and vans and SUVs. It has to do with the mass and height of the bus. I'll skip the physics lesson.

If it helps at all, I can give a personal testimonial. I am a therapist, and most of my patients are trauma patients, survivors of severe motor vehicle accidents. My wife is a board-certified pediatrician. In short, we both know how horribly wrong things can go in accidents. We both are all about safety for our kids. They were 5 and 2.5 for our first trip, and 6.5 and 4 for our second trip (we stayed at POFQ the second trip). We had no hesitation putting our kids on DME buses and Disney Transport buses.

It probably seems silly not to worry about it once we are at the resort but it is the ride from MCO to POFQ that worries me not to have her in a car seat.

I have looked into Garden Grocer, is there anyway to get wine or beer from them? I do not want to pay 200% on a bottle of wine to enjoy after the kids go to bed and we won't drink it enough to add the wine option to the dining plan.

We used ME with my nephew at 2 and 3 and there was no problem with him on the bus without a car seat. With the thousands of kids that disney transports on ME without car seats in a given year, I say you are worrying too much.

Step 1. Take a deep breath

Step 2. Repeat after me... "My child will be fine on DME!"

Honey, there's no more risk from MCO to POFQ than from POFQ to where ever you're headed. Disney is transporting hundreds of kids all day long every day!!! My husband is a doctor too and we are crazy about safety!!! BUT I had no problem putting my 14 month old and my 3 year old on board and enjoying the ride all the way to WDW. (And we'll be doing the same thing in Sept. with our 2 and 5 year old!)

I guess if it really bothers you that much you should rent a car and use it the WHOLE time you're there. But statiscally you have a better chance of getting in an accident in a car than you do a bus.

You should do whatever makes you comfortable - it is your vacation. But understand there's no more risk on DME than any other bus ride you're going to take!
