Getting a laugh out of Spaceship Earth

Sometimes the "cropping" on faces is a little strange. I've had "strange things" :lookaroun growing out of my head in the final movie.

Same thing for me this last trip Vern. Isabeau just laughed at me on the screen since my face was a little catawampus. I was laughing too.

Although, others might be laughing at the finale in general. Not sure. :lookaroun

Never heard people laughing at the ride (besides the video), but the people who take pics during the finale annoy me *facepalm*, I've told them this as well

You don't find photoshopping your face into a Flash animation uproariously funny in a "will be completely ho-hum technology in six months" kind of way?

I do but when Im riding backwards on Spaceship Earth it catches me off guard. I make the weirdest faces on that ride, I wish they would have the projections on those triangles so I can see the other clips and pictures.

Its so wierd hearing people laugh on Spaceship Earth like its some kind of funny joke. Am I the only one who isnt used to it? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9HQVhFhpv4s
I noticed laughing when we went on SSE, too. It was great to hear guests actually extracting some entertainment from what is a fairly dull, encyclopedia-like, middle school level review of communication throughout history. Since museum pieces are becoming more and more interactive, it makes sense that Disney would add those types of touches to SSE.

My mom tried to be funny when she last rode Spaceship Earth. She made this weird pose to try to amuse me. Anyhow when her image was projected on the Globe at the exit of the ride, someone looked at hers and said, "what's wrong with that one?"

I have two options: laugh or cringe, I will take the former. I love the ride but that final part is a disaster. :(

I dont mean to be a know it all but if it makes you feel any better they never really had anything after you went around that bend in the previous ending where the city was anyway, just fiber optics. I consider the screens as a filler for that section. Sadly they never installed the replacement scenery before the screens except for the klydescope which I think is pretty cool so I still give that version a chance. We all will miss the city and I hope they make a new one. I want them to make better northern light projections for the space scene.

The first time I rode Spaceship Earth with the new ending, it had taken a picture of JUST my video camera since I was videoing at the time. So my animated person at the end had a camcorder head. haha

The finale is a terrible step down from its previous incarnations, but when I'm actually on the ride, I enjoy it for what it's worth. I mean, I can get as angry at TDO as I want when I'm at home, but when you're actually at Epcot, you have to make the most out of it. :)

This new version isn't a downgrade but it is very different. There are hundreds of screens, 2 for each car. Each of them have your own personalized show showing a cartoon with your face cropped into it. That is one state of the art system. It takes 2 pictures for each car, crops in 4 faces non stop. Then the picture is sent to the right car almost every time along with hundreds of other cars. Talk about advanced communication and processing. My standard Imac would go up in flames trying to do all that work. If it weren't for the shortage of money it could have possibly been the best Spaceship Earth ending in Epcot history. Just think after the old city location the screen starts where in the old ending you were left in the dark with only light effects. Now you have a fun little video clip to keep you occupied and still there are lighting effects. If there wasn't planned scenery there would be stars in place of the curtains. I do like the new beginning, it has a great buildup.

I prefer the 1994 version still. Better music, better finale. The fiber-optic lights as you descend into the tunnel always fascinated me.

As an amusing anecdote, I thought it'd be funny if I wore sunglasses while taking the photo. What I didn't know is that the way the camera works, the flash reflects off of the glasses, thus creating a hole in my head for the rest of the picture. It looked slightly disturbing but hey, it was entertaining.

I had a terrible cold one day at Epcot and I was blowing my nose and totally missed the shoot and the whole screen show you see my hands and tissue over my face with my eyes popping out bobbing back and fourth. I was laughing so hard my chest hurt.

It really isn't the screens that are the root of the horror of the new descent. They could have done something meaningful with them and I don't think we'd care as much. It's the fact that they took an inspiring and appropriate ending that perfectly explained the meaning of Epcot-that we as a people could cooperate and learn from one another through technology and communication-and threw it away in exchange for what is obviously a cheap laugh. It insults the intelligence of the rider that we are somehow "creating" the future by answering questions and then embellishes our answers into a Jetsons cartoon. And then the real kicker is the final line of dialogue-that no one knows for sure what the future holds, meaning that the video was pointless. We are then sent on our way without any sort of inspiration, no sense that the world will be a better place. All we are left with is a stupid, poorly cropped photo of ourselves riding a surfboard. :brick::brick::brick::brick::brick:

I liked the old, more thematic endings as opposed to the new cheesy funny one. The older endings were more dramatic and really hammered the points about communication in the future home. The new ending is just there to be amusing...which it is...for the first few times you go on it.

I wouldn't mind the screens if they have a formal ending from the klydescope to that bend where the ride used to pretty much end anyway. I have to admit I do like the new intro music and the space music. I dont like the music they play in the tunnel, I feel that the old music was more powerful.
