I would agree off-site could offer more amenities but when you only get to DLR once every 40 years, staying on-site becomes something speical...even if it is at Paradise Pier.

If I only go to Disneyland once every 40 years, I'm staying at the Frontierland or Adventureland suites at the Disneyland Hotel!

If it's the only time you get to go in 40 years, please make it 41 years to pull together the extra dough and stay at Grand Californian!
It is the only way to go for a once-in-a-lifetime trip!
Nevertheless, enjoy your trip.
I'm a WDW lifer, but since World of Color and the DCA renovation, I think that DLR is my new secret favorite!
