Gastric bypass

Hi, my wife recently had gastric bypass surgery, thus so can't eat alot of food. We still would love to go to the character buffets but don't want to pay adult price for her, since she now eats less then the kids. Does anyone know if she is able to pay for a kids meal vs. an adult meal. She does have a card from her Dr. stating that she had the procedure done. thank you

Per Disney official policy (ie if you ask when making a Priority Seating), no she will be asked to pay the adult price..

However, it is truly up to the restaurant manager's discretion if they will make an exception for medical reasons. Bring your card from your doctor and simply ask at the podium on the day you are dining, but be prepared for a no answer.

Hope this helps... :veryconfu

One thing is for sure - she won't look back on these vacation photos and cringe! I used to do that.. then I went on Medifast! 80lbs later, I'm working on the last 30lbs, but I LOVE my vacation pictures now! :)
Wish her tons of luck from a fellow big loser! :)

If she is over 12 she will have to pay full adult price. Many people don't eat a lot at the buffets and still have to pay full price.

The use of the word "will" is very strong here

When my parents go to WDW, they order kids meals all the time without ever getting questioned (and they're well over 12 y/o). Most of the time, it's at counter service locations, but I'm pretty sure they have done this at a couple table service restaurants as well.

Here's the bottom line: Disney is a sensitive company. They definately go out of their way not to descriminate against people (I'm not turning this into a political discussion). I would find it extremely hard to believe that you couldn't get a child's buffet with proof of a recent medical procedure. If the waitress doesn't budge, just talk to the manager, but don't make a situation out of it. Since you have proof of the procedure, and you are still getting a buffet at the adult price, I really don't see what the problem would be. It's not like you're trying to get away with something.

If you still can't get the kid's price on the buffet, then you have to choose between coughing up the adult price for your wife's meal, having your wife eat somewhere else before/afterward, or even skipping the buffet altogether.

I don't think the OP is trying to get away with anything, but, I also think that it would be totally unfair to everyone out there that pays full fare for these buffets and don't usually eat very much. I don't happen to fall into this category, I love to eat!! :) Disney is the one place that I indulge this passion with buffets (and pay a dear price for it later). But, IMHO,this is sort of like those who want a break on admission to the parks because they don't ride all the rides. Not to be harsh or sarcastic, but, if you chose to eat at these places, you need to expect to pay for it.
Non buffets and counter services generally do allow those with a limited appitite to order children's meals. But, there is a difference between buffets and fixed portions.

As a light eater (now) myself, I'll say this - Buffets usually make money off me. This means that I end up eating far less than I've paid for, but I've come to accept it as par for the lean-life course for me. If I go to a buffet, I expect to pay adult prices, even if I'll eat less than a kid. At counter service and table service restruants, I cut down the portion size by sharing, since I've noticed the children's options are usually unhealthy (mac n' cheese, chicken nuggets, etc.). There are other, family style meals that have character meet and greets as well. I hear the one at the Polynesian is great and since it's family style, perhaps she wouldn't feel so bad about wastage?

But by all means talk to them. They may give you a deal! :)

I hear that, and seeing what I have seen at these buffets, they make money off me too, even though I overindulge there. :) I am also a very healthy eater.....except on vacation. :)

He he he - Now, I will admit to indulging in a mixed drink (or two) and/or dessert at just about every restruant I can get into around World Showcase! Not to mention I can't wait until we go to Victoria and Albert's this year! My DH and I went once in 2001 for our honeymoon, so we're finally able to afford to go back. That place is an eater's PARADISE!
I do have to admit though... Hoop-de-doo is the ONE place I eat fried chicken. :)

Hi, welcome to the forums!

Unfortunately, I don´t think what you are asking for is possible, unless as someone already said, the restaurant manager decides to allow it at the moment you are there.
When you go to a buffet style restaurant, you are not really paying for what is on your plate, but for the whole bunch of items you could be able to put in it, no matter if just one bite of each.
When I go to one, I usually don´t eat that much either and still have to pay the whole price.
At least where I live, in some restaurants, there is the option of going to the buffet or ordering a dish from the menu and pay just for that (sometimes the latter is more expensive). Maybe she could order a dish from the menu instead of going to the buffet line?

I personally think the manager or chef where you are going to eat will do anything to accomidate you.

My suggestion:

When you call to make your PS ask the operator for the number to the restaurant. Don't ask the PS operator about getting a special meal as they will end up referring you to the actual restaurant. When you call the restaurant, ask for the manager or the chef, tell them your situation and the day and time you are going to dine and simply ask if they can make up a small plate and charge you accordingly. Just remember if you eat off of someone elses plate or eat off of the buffet and you are over 12, expect to pay the full adult price.

Just FYI, most buffets make money off everyone reguardless if you eat allot or not. For example, for those who have CiCi's pizza in there area, I was told by a store manager that the point at which they, CiCi's, start losing money on a customer is 54 slices of pizza. I am a big eater. I could get nowhere near 20 I dont think.

Here is a price list of some of the more popular character buffets. You may find that it's not a big deal to pay the extra few dollars due to the fact that the adult meals are not much more than the kids meals.

Crystal Palace: Breakfast, Adult $16.99 Child $8.99

O'hana @ Polynesian:Breakfast, Adult $16.99 Child $8.99

Biergarten @ Epcot: lunch, $15.00 across the board (non character but entertainment)

Akershus @ Epcot: Lunch, $14.00 across the board

Cape may Cafe @ Beach Club: Breakfast, Adult $16.99 Child $8.99

Chef Mickey's @ Contemporary: breakfast, Adult $16.99 Child $8.99

garden Grill @ Epcot: lunch, Adult $19.99 Child $9.99

Liberty Tree Tavern @ MK: lunch & Dinner, adult $21.99 child $9.99

Good luck with whatever course you guys take:)

I have a feeling you will be stuck paying the adult price. However unless you plan on having a character meal every day, I would just pay up for that one meal, call it a loss and move on.

Wow- we have Cici's around us and I probably average, between dessert, pasta, and garlic bread, 6-8 large helpings of food each time, and I was sure with the $3.99 price they would be losing money off of me.

Wow.

Anyway-- back to WDW talk :hammer:

Good lordy that's a lot of food! Whew! :) I'm sure they do make money, otherwise they wouldn't be in business. It's just a term I use... then again, we have a friend coming with us to WDW this year, Cam, who can pack it away! He's looking forward to making the folks at Hoop-De-Doo come back with more buckets of ribs and seeing how many he can pack down! LOL
