Did he do such an awesome job that they scrapped him too?

And that, kids, is why Florida will never have a Maynard. :(

So am I correct in thinking the California park give more freedom to actors, while the Florida park is so uptight, you could shove sand up its heinie and it would come out a glass slipper?
Pretty much. Though it's not so much the Florida parks to blame for this as it is the more entitled clientele it attracts in comparison to it's California counterpart.

I've never been to DLR so I personally can't compare but I've heard they roam around there more, so that is what I was basing my assumption on.

Does anyone have a good handle on how the queue-for-designated character spot arrangement came to be at the Magic Kingdom and why character interactions are still so ad-hoc at Disneyland?

I know it's not a new things, but I'm curious how much of it is management and how much is guest behavior.

As I understand it, the Japanese Disney parks follow the WDW scheme of doing things, but with even more rigidity, right?

No...Tokyo has Mickeys house, Ariel's Grotto, Lost Delta greeting trails, and Duffy as fixed locations. Everything else is random. The rules are one pic per group for one of those spots, as many as you want in a free for all

I don't have any firsthand knowledge of what happened after the temporary suspension but I can tell you that his name is not showing up on the cast roster. So it looks as though he quit or was terminated. I hope he quit!

That sucks. I really hope he's found himself another job that lets him have more freedom with his talent.

I noticed the difference in the guests' attitudes between the 2 parks when I visited DLR last month. DLR has a much more laid back vibe than WDW. Saw very few scooters (counted 3 my first day) and the strollers don't come out until late AM. Really enjoyed my trip (hadn't visited since early 1980s) and plan on going again. The fact that I could walk on just about every ride, including the most popular ones (only really need a FP for Cars) was mind blowing for a frequent WDW visitor.

But it's a shame Disney gets so about some of the enhancements provided by CMs portraying beloved Disney characters. I could see prohibiting behavior that would endanger a guest or the CM his/herself, but when the CM obviously gets his role and gets into his role, he should be rewarded, not disciplined or fired. And Gaston is supposed to be a jerk. Maybe the supervisors need a refresher course - like watching the movie, perhaps?

On the other hand, in society nowadays, where everyone can get on social media and raise a stink for even trivial things and it spreads like wildfire, I can't necessarily fault management for trying to cover their butts. Let's be honest- while a good "heel character" is great fun, some people do NOT have a sense of humor, and WILL complain to Guest Services if they happen to be on the receiving end of things.

And those individuals sadly ruin it for the rest of us....

Social media has turned into this evil monster to be abused and manipulated. If you don't like something, just. walk. away. And don't give us the "I paid a fortune for this trip to WDW" bull because guess what? So did the rest of us and we are TIRED of you getting your knickers in a wad, marching over to GS and complaining how your trip was ruined by a CM getting his character and becoming his character. Just. get. over. yourself. please.

And that's my rant for the day. :)

Sadly, that's nothing new. There's always something that someone doesn't like and then tries to ruin it for everybody else. Comic books, rock music, TV, video games, etc, often under the guise of "But think of the children!" To paraphrase Louis C.K., they're YOUR dumb kids- YOU think of them. It might be an awkward conversation for you, but tough luck. That's what you signed up for with the "Joy of Parenthood" package.

Yeah, as a parent, I hated parents like that. "Susie will be scarred FOR LIFE if she sees [name the offense]!!!" Really? I had one of those "saw my opposite gender parent naked by accident" incidents once as a kid. My parent was infinitely more upset than me. I just went back into my room, told my friend about what just had happened (which the entire planet knew about since that parent was screaming about the "run-in") and we laughed. And I still laugh about it. Was I scarred for life? Nah. Just learned that if you decide to walk naked down the hallway to the bathroom and will be passing by one of your kids rooms, you might have an interesting encounter with said child...... ;)

Yep. Kids are resilient. I grew up in the 80s, and 80s children's films seemed designed to traumatize the young viewers. Secret of NIMH, Black Cauldron, The Never Ending Story, The Adventures of Mark Twain, and Lord knows how many others.

Gremlins, Raiders (thanks to #2, we now have the PG-13 rating), etc. I grew up watching those 50s and 60s sci-fi movies - the ones where the aliens/spiders/grasshoppers, etc. are stand ins for the Commies - and I'm okay. What was really scary were the duck and cover exercises in school. Yes, because if the Ruskies dropped an atomic bomb on L.A., I will save my behind by curling up in a fetal position under my desk. Yeah, right. Some of my favorite movies are those sci-fi gems from that time period.

THIS! My god yes. Soooo much difference between the crowds. DL's folks treat it sort of like a neighborhood park- 'no rush to get on, I'll be back' and a much better vibe. The whole Disney culture just seems like a much bigger part of their lives- especially for younger people. For WDW folks it's more of a competition and they just seem angrier/hassled. I put some of it down to WDW is a destination for once in a lifetimers, but some of it's the demographic, which for the sake of 'World' peace I won't go into. I am thrilled to be going back to DL in August for D23 and visiting the parks again.

I had read on these forums he was suspended and became a friend to Goofy and someone else, but maybe insiders like @akayw0718 know? (I think she's one the that posted that info).

I had said awhile ago, he was SO good, he had me believing. :hilarious:

*Achievement unlocked* Gaston, you made me believe. You are like The Highlander...

"There can only be one." ;)
He was definitely my favorite.

I was shocked that I walked up to the FP machine for Star Tours at 10:45 AM and got a FP return time for 11:50 AM. And in the hour between entering the park and my FP time, was able to ride PoTC, Thunder Mountain and one other ride. And when I walked off Star Tours I got a FP for Space Mountain with a return time within the hour. Can you imagine that at WDW back in the days of paper FPs? The 2nd day I visited DL I just walked up the steps of Haunted Mansion and right into the stretching room. And I got to the park around 10:00 AM. The longest wait time in standby? Submarines (which don't have FP). Waited about 20 minutes in standby for Space Mountain in the early PM. And DLR doesn't merge standby and FP lines, at least not on the rides I used FP for. Other than the Cars ride at DCA, you don't really need FP for most of the attractions. Which is probably why for those rides that do have FP the ticket machines are difficult to find. I had to ask the CMs at the Cars ride where the FP machine was - it is at the entrance to Bug's Life.

I was blown away by Disneyland. And I grew up in LA and visited several times. DCA is incredible. And that I could walk across the street to the Grand Floridian, turn left at the staircase and in under 5 minutes I'm in DTD. And it's then a short walk to the plaza. Turn left, Disneyland. Turn right, DCA. And I could, as a DLR resort guest, walk into DCA from the Grand Californian (was staying at Paradise Pier).

Frankly, I LOVE Disneyland's DTD. It's not this giant mass of humanity. It's like a nice street with great shops/restaurants on either side. And higher end stores. Yup, I found the Fossil store. Even the merchandise in a much smaller World of Disney seemed to be of a much higher class.

I'm thinking of making one of our many trips to WDW each year an annual trip to DLR, I loved it so much. And I hate to fly.....

Another thought: Every single CM I had interaction with to purchase either merchandise or food asked if I was an AP or a DVC member in order to get the discount. I don't remember any CM at WDW asking me that question. I visited several times after getting a WDW AP before I realized I got a 10% discount on merchandise. And that's only because the CM asked my daughter if she had an AP.

I had no "want" to ever go to DLR because I assumed, "it's a smaller park = less 'wow'."

Your review of DLR is the same of everyone's - everyone says it's more chill and overall a better experience. I actually want to go there now. I've never heard anyone say anything negative about DLR. Interesting.

That and the fact that when characters do attempt to roam around (see: International Gateway) or rare characters come out, we unfortunately see bad behaviors from both off-duty cast (I see you DCP) and locals.

...and that's why we can't have nice things (the entitlement-frenzied guests).

Seriously, if there is a loud and large hoarde around a character, we are fine with watching for a minute or two and going on our way. I refuse to deal with obnoxious grown adults so my kiddos can see a character. We manage to see a good amount of characters regardless when we do a couple character meals anyway. Our trip isn't "ruined" if we miss out on someone. We teach the kiddos, "such is life." We always can try tomorrow and if not, no one is going to die - we are fortunate to have the means to vacation here, and many people/kids aren't as fortunate.
