OK, We've had sickness at WDW, how about emergency surgery?
Last April my DD who was 14 at that time and I traveled to orlando to spend nine carefree days and nights. HA!
The day before we left home DD, who had only had two filings in her life, complained of a tooth ache. An emergency call to her dentist who saw her and said he couldn't find any problem. I asked him to ex-ray it, he said no need. So he gave her an antibiotic and pain medication because we were going out of town.
DD felt terrible the entire week. Call after call to the dentist, (who sent another pain medication and said to give her Motrin or Alive to boost it) our family doctor, and finally a visit to a dentist in Orlando who took out the filing our dentist had put in. He said the filing had started pressing on the nerve in her tooth and that was causing all the pain. The Orlando dentist gave her another antibiotic and a third pain medication. Problem solved, Right? Noooo
Next day, a few days of vacation left. We went to the park and DD started feeling light-headed and short of breath. We went to the on site First Aide Station. They heard her story and decided her problem now was the newest pain medication which contained Codeine. They suggested going back to the second pain medication.
The next day we went to Universal. DD was still trying to salvage our trip. She was sooo pale and became short of breath again. Off we go to the First Aide Station at Universal. Tell the whole story. They decide it is the heat on top of the medication.
I am and have been freaking out. My DD was not getting better, our plane tickets weren't for another couple of days. I had called doctors and dentists, went to a dentist in Orlando, and visited First Aide Stations at Disney and Universal. What to do now?
That was decided for me. Late that night, DD sat up in bed and told me she couldn't breath and had a terrible pain in her shoulder. I thought she was having a heart attack. Stupid me put her in the rental car and took off for help instead of calling an ambulance like I should have.
After a trip to the hospital that is a story in itself, (got lost, ran a red-light, got stopped by Florida highway patrol - who was the rudest, most uncaring individual I have ever encountered, a unit of the Fire Dept, Paramedics - who are the best people in the world, and finally arriving at the ER) we were at the right place to get help at long last.
The Doctors and the entire staff at Sand Lake Hospital are fantastic. When they checked DD's vital signs it was like being on the television program ER. There were nursed, technicians, and Doctors coming from every direction to help DD. Her blood hemoglobin level which should have been 14 or so was 6.1 The nurse described it as she was literally missing half her blood. Her body was shutting down. Within an hour of our arrival they had called in a wonderful surgeon who performed a three hour emergency exploratory surgery (an 8 inch incision) looking for a gastric bleed. He looked everywhere but couldn't find where her blood had gone.
That night, DD received 4 units of blood to stabilize her. After surgery she was put in ICU. Remember, we were there alone. I was frightened to death that I would lose her, My DH and BIL took off from Louisiana to be with us but it was the next day before they arrived. I have never been so scared in my life.
After 5 days in the hospital DD was released. We have had her tested by several Doctors but never found out what happened to her. The best guess was that all the pain medication was aggravated by the Alive the dentist told me to give her and caused a gastric bleed which then sealed itself off before surgery. Of course, another Doctor says he can't believe all that happened to a healthy teen in a weeks time. We may never know what happened but you can believe we have her blood level checked often.
Thank goodness she seems to be fine except for one heck of a scar.
