Fuel Shortage

Hello Everyone,

I am a longtime reader...first time "post-er".

My wife and I are headed to WDW this weekend. I am wondering how a gas shortage will affect resort transportation and park operation.

Also, I am worried that we will have plenty of gas to get there...but will not have enough to get back home (darn!). We were there during Charlie last year and it was a little nuts at the Care Care Center.

I know, I know...not a big deal when compared to the devastation of Kristina, but it's still a concern.

Um its Katrina, not Kristina.

Anywho.

Last night at the parks everything seemed fine (at the gas station).

Overnight there weren't any jumps in prices (premium is still around $3.00).

Over in Celebration the station was busy -- but the car care center seemed normal.

I'll post something if it goes crazy.

It should be fine... most stations here in Tallahassee were outa gas this morning but by lunch had gas and prices were down to 2.80. They were around 3.15 yesterday!

From Orlando Sentinel
Rumors also circulated that stations were going to close early or stop selling gas.

The increased demand, coupled with rationing by some of the state's wholesalers, exhausted supplies and people's patience at some stations, though energy experts said long-term problems are unlikely.

"As we work through the next couple of months, you will probably see some stations without fuel from time to time," said Eric Hamilton, associate director of the Florida Petroleum Council in Tallahassee. "But right now, it looks like we are in fairly good shape."

....

On an average day, consumers in Florida use about 23 million gallons of gasoline. State officials said that, as of Monday, more than 162 million gallons of fuel was in storage or at Florida ports, and close to 40 ships or barges were to arrive by the middle of next week with an additional 193 million gallons.

Florida, which receives most of its gasoline by sea, is more capable of finding alternative sources than other parts of the country, experts said.

"Florida has more supply flexibility because it doesn't rely on pipelines for its gasoline," said Kevin Lindemer, managing director of Global Insight in Lexington, Mass. "The delivery system gives the state more access to other sources."

I live in Florida too!

I remembered them. I guess I just do a little name association. I have a cousin named Kristina and Katrina -- and I caught the mistake pretty easily because of that. It would have been bad for 'Kristina' if the hurricane was named Kristina -- she's a recording artist, and only goes by her first name -- that couldn't be good for marketing. Katrina is a lot younger. Prob. scarred for life now.

You should be o.k. barring other bad news doesn't happen.

Just stick to the gas on property, its usually the cheapest.

Hey

I have a student named Kristina...maybe that's what it was.

Anyhow, we always refill on property on our way out. It is almost always cheaper than on 27.

Sometimes we refill across from the Studios...other times at the CCC.

I think that Disney can afford to pay for gas.

... Remember what everyone pays for park tickets, resort accomodations, and everything else? You must be forgetting.

They have gas at the stations on property but around off property the stations are running out but are getting new deliveries soon. I just had to go to 4 stations to finally find gas but it was 2.89 a gallon. From what I hear from others ( Never thought I would say this--> ) it seems to be a low price compared to other parts of the country.

Sounds good to me

GAS WAR

Join the resistance!!!! I hear we are going to hit close to $3.00 a
gallon by the summer and it might go higher!! Want gasoline prices to
come down? We need to take some intelligent, united action.

Phillip Hollsworth, offered this good idea: This makes MUCH MORE
SENSE than the "don't buy gas on a certain day" campaign that was going
around last April or May! The oil companies just laughed at that
because they knew we wouldn't continue to "hurt" ourselves by refusing to
buy gas. It was more of an inconvenience to us than it was a problem for them.
BUT, whoever thought of this idea, has come up with a plan that can really
work.

Please read it and join with us! By now you're probably thinking
gasoline priced at about $1.50 is super cheap. Me too! It is currently $2.09 for
regular unleaded in my town. Now that the oil companies and the OPEC
nations have conditioned us to think that the cost! of a gallon of gas is CHEAP at $1.50- $1.75, we need to take aggressive action to teach them that BUYERS
control the marketplace....not sellers. With the price of gasoline going
up more each day, we consumers need to take action. The only way we are
going to see the price of gas come down is if we hit someone in the pocketbook
by not purchasing their gas! And we can do that WITHOUT hurting ourselves.
How? Since we all rely on our cars, we can't just stop buying gas.. But we CAN
have an impact on gas prices if we all act together to force a price war.

Here's the idea: For the rest of this year, DON'T purchase ANY gasoline from the two biggest companies (which now are one), EXXON and MOBIL. If they are not selling any gas, they will be inclined to reduce their prices. If they reduce their prices, the other companies will have to follow suit. But to have an impact, we need to reach literally millions of Exxon and Mobil gas buyers. It's really simple to do!! Now, don't wimp out on me at this point...keep reading and I'll
explain how simple it is to reach millions of people!!

I am sending this note to about thirty people. If each of you send
it to at least ten more (30 x 10 = 300) ... and those 300 send it to at
least ten more (300 x 10 = 3,000)...and so on, by the time the message
reaches the sixth generation of people, we will have reached over THREE
MILLION consumers. If those three million get excited and ! pass this
on to ten friends each, then 30 million people will have been
contacted! If it goes one level further, you guessed it..... THREE
HUNDRED MILLION PEOPLE!!!

Again, all You have to do is send this to 10 people. That's all.
(If you don't understand how we can reach 300 million and all you have to do is
send this to 10 people.... Well, let's face it, you just aren't a mathematician.
But I am ... so trust me on this one.)

How long would all that take? If each of us sends this e-mail out to
ten more people within one day of receipt, all 300 MILLION people could
conceivably be contacted within the next 8 days!!! I'll bet you didn't
think you and I had that much potential, did you! Acting together we can
make a difference.

If this makes sense to you, please pass this message on. PLEASE HOLD
OUT UNTIL THEY LOWER THEIR PRICES TO THE $1.30 RANGE AND KEEP THEM
DOWN. THIS CAN REALLY WORK.

A couple of items here (I work for an Oil major, I live in houston...)

1) Exxon and Mobil are 1 company, not 2
2) A majority of the money that is made by big oil is made in Exploration & Production. Once they find the oil, they can and will sell/trade it anywhere. China alone will keep big oil prices plenty high.
3) Big oil doesn't really own many, if any, of the retail stations you see on your corner. Not buying from them only hurts the small local store manager.
4) In the retail stations, their biggest margin's aren't on gasoline anyway, it's on the chips, soda's, candy, etc. that we American's love.

Nice try, but really wouldn't matter. XOM still prints money, even if a Mobil branded station doesn't sell a drop of gasoline all year.

It's close to 4.00 here in New York State.

Why am I not taking the WEDway peoplemover?!

Where in New York? One of my co-workers today was telling me that some of the gas stations in the Bronx and Queens are at $6/gallon already? I told her to shut her mouth and show me some sources where she got that. She goes, "My husband told me." And then I said, "Your husband better start showing me some sources."

Stop making up rumors... this is what throws people in a frenzy! All I know is that because of the rumors, the gas stations down here in Naples are busier than normal. Luckily, I was able to get gas.

Oh, by the way -- I'm not going to let any gas price hike destroy my weekend plans at Disney. :)

Wait. Are you saying that $4.00 in NY State is way off beat? Here is Nashville, traditionally a pretty cheap market, it is around $3.19. I just spoke with my dad in northern Indiana (not near Chicago), and it is around $3.75. Therefore, $4.00 on the east coast is very possible.

Gasoline futures are at $2.36/gallon on the NY Mercantile Exchange (NYMEX). When you add in Federal, State and Local taxes (which are not insignificant), transportation and dealer margin, I doubt we'll be seeing $3.00 gasoline any time soon. They were as high as $2.51 earlier today, so they did come down substantially.
