Ft. Wilderness Cabins

We are staying in a FW cabin for a week and I'm a little nervous. We love the WL, but wanted to try something different (and have a little more room). We have also rented a golf cart for the week. Does anyone have any input, suggestions, do's or don'ts?

Thanks

The golf cart is definitely a must! Depending on the amount of people going, you might need two. Only one car fits comfortably in the space given. A bit confusing the first time but overall a veny nice, very fun place to stay.

The cabins are great for their spaciousness, comfort, and it's definitely one of the quieter areas in WDW. It's also great to have a fridge with some non-Disney food to break up the days and ease up the budget. The housekeeping will also do your dishes for you (bonus).

However, getting back and forth from the parks was the biggest problem. It seemed like they treat FW guests as second rate to the WL guests. For example, when taking the boat or bus to or from MK (the closest park) it makes stops at WL between MK & FW on BOTH trips. Hence, the WL guests have much shorter commuting times.

Also, on the one night we tried to go from FW to DTD, it turned out to be a real mistake. We went from FW to WL, then to the GF, and then to DTD. The whole trip took almost an hour.:hammer:

Oh, if you get a golf cart, mark it clearly with decorations, ribbon, or whatever. The keys for the carts are not unique and it's possible to start and drive away with the someone else's cart if you're not looking carefully at the numbers.

Hope this helps.

We stayed in the cabins last summer for the first time. We had a great time. The only real suggestion I could make is try to get as close to the boat docks as possible. It makes trips to the parks quicker. The big pool area and movie area is also on this side of the property. If you have the time, a movie at the campgrounds is a must. There is a singalong around a campfire and they sell s'more supplies to make your own. We had a great time and saw the Great Mouse Detective! Relax and have fun!

 Hi, :) of all the disney resorts, and I've stayed at a lot, my Favorite is the cabins at Ft Wilderness. The stores are cozy with ceckerboards and there are lots of activities including a movie under the stars and a horse drawn carriage ride. There's also a petting zoo and peacocks walking about freely. Because of the sheer size of the campgrounds though, it can be frustrating getting to and from the parks in a timely manner, some even suggest using your own transportation, but the carts help as you can drive them to the overall bus stop as apposed to waiting for a bus to take you to the overall bus stop and then take a different bus to the park of your choice. Over all, the scenery and the relaxed feeling is a very very fun and enjoyable time and I HIGHLY suggest it.....but you will have to make consessions with the transportation as Ft. Wilderness is huge and getting around it can be hard, but the cart helps ;) Hope this helps....but there are tons of stuff to do there....TONS..even the Hoop-de-doo Musical Revue ;)

Wow, everyone is so helpful! Thank you for the great info! I also read somewhere that you can drive your golf cart to the WL and catch the bus there instead.

Fort Wilderness is the best. We are RVers and always stay there. We haven't stayed in a cabin, but the golf cart is a great idea. We ususally ride our bikes. Definately plan one day to stay at the campground and enjoy all it has to offer. It can be a nice break from the parks.

Have dinner at Trails End Buffet and Hoop de Doo. Sit on the beach and watch Wishes or the water pagent. Take a hayride or a trail ride. Stop by the stables and see the horses and as previously posted do the camp-fire sing along and night time movie. You can rent small watercraft for fun on Bay Lake and if you feel like cooking one night, a BBQ cookout can be fun.

Most of all, HAVE A GREAT TIME.

There is a tree that grew around a lawnmower at Fort Wilderness. You'll have to look for it!

We used to stay at Fort Wilderness all the time when I was growing up. I have my best memories there! The nice thing about it is, you are at WDW, but yet, you are on a camping vacation too! The cabins are nice with the kitchen area.

The petting zoo is a great thing to see. Also, there is an electric light boat parade every night. Its kind of cheesy, but its also part of WDW history. There are hammocks on the beach that were so much fun to lay on. I don't know if they still have the movies and sing alongs, but if they do, they are so much fun!

And yes, the golf carts are great fun to drive around!
