Trip Report Frozen No More: a live birthday TR *Completed*

What: A mother/daughter long weekend to celebrate a Valentine birthday
Who: Myself (Tuvalu) and Emily (@TrolleyFollower91)
Where: POP! (70s building, yeah!)
When: Feb. 13-17, 2014
Why: I have never posted a trip report but was inspired by @coachwnh and @disneysince71 to go live!

Until about six hours ago, when our plane actually departed, I wasn't sure this trip was actually gonna happen. We live in Atlanta, a place that is not equipped to handle winter storms. You may have seen photos from "Snowjam/Snowmaggedon" (as the locals called it) from a couple weeks ago, where thousands of commuters were trapped in their vehicles from 8-12 hours and schoolchildren had to spend the night in their schools since the buses were unable to transport them home. Emily's usual 15 minute ride home from the elementary school where she student teaches took her over 3 hours, including having to abandon her car and walk the remaining two miles home.

After that storm blew over (so to speak!) I remarked to Emily how fortunate we were that the storm didn't happen the day we were scheduled to fly to Orlando. She replied, "Don't worry, that won't happen again."

Until this week.

Monday the forecasters began predicting a "catastrophic" snow and ice storm (I hear all you northerners laughing!) The governor of GA declared a state of emergency through the weekend. Schools and businesses
were closed beginning Tuesday. We began to see our long-awaited trip drift away...

Our Wednesday flight was cancelled at lunchtime on Tuesday. Sleet and freezing rain began that night and everything was frozen Wednesday morning.

Wednesday was a mix of sleet and snow. I was able to rebook our flight for late Thursday afternoon, doubtful we'd get to leave. And this is what we woke up to this morning:

Hi WDWJenn09!
Quick question?
How reliable is the July 27th date for the Poly pool closure, and which pool(s) are involved? My daughter and her family will be there about the first week of August. Disney/Poly could provide no time frame to her.
Thanks, and Ch-Ears!

Hi Mebucko:

The dates are reliable. I asked the Poly Club Level Intinerary Planner and that was the information I was given. I also "spoke" (through a discussion board) with Tikiman and he confirmed those dates as well. Check out his website and look to the February 2014 entry on the DVC news page and then specifically Feb. 19, http://www.tikimanpages.com/poly/the-resort/dvc/item/191-disney-vacation-club. The pool is the main volcano pool. The IPO said the Grand Floridian pool would be offered as a alternative. I do not know if this affects the quiet pool.

The feeling I got from the IPO is that these dates were not going to change. It was very sad for me because I wanted to stay at the Poly but I couldn't justify the stay with no main feature pool and from what I hear around the boards, the whole resort will be quite a mess by then! I am sure Disney will do their best to minimize the impact on the guests but for us, no main pool was a deal breaker.

I hope this helps and sorry if I am the bearer of bad news! I didn't want to believe that Disney would close the main pool of a major resort during the height of the summer but I am sure they have their reasons!

Would this be a deal breaker for your daughter also?

Thanks, WDWJenn09,
Sounds like it is sadly true. Thank you for the follow-up - you did your due diligence. Thanks also for the Tikiman link! They will probably stay elsewhere, and catch the Poly another time. Their kids would have loved the volcano pool! The Poly always been "Home" to our family. and I am confident it will return better than ever. My wife and I lucked out for our Feb trip. We also can't believe they would close the pool in mid-summer!
Thanks again, and will look for you at a brand new, and even better, Poly in the future!
Ch_Ears to you and yours!
