Trip Report From the Poly to "Radiator Springs" - Our First Split Stay!

Hi everyone! I’m Katie, and this is my trip report for our first split-stay WDW vacation!

When I began planning my family’s March 2017 visit, I knew we wanted to stay at least seven nights to really have time to enjoy the parks and resorts. My immediate family is my husband and our two children, a six year old girl and almost-three year old boy. This would be my daughter’s fifth WDW trip and my son’s third. We love traveling to WDW with our young children – we’ve found there is something for everyone to have an enjoyable vacation, and we feel Disney really makes it easy on young families with options like Rider Swap, Baby Care Centers, pack and plays and bed rails for the rooms, Magical Express/transportation (no car seats needed!) and much more.

We fell in love with both Animal Kingdom Lodge and Wilderness Lodge on previous trips, but we have also enjoyed several of the moderate and value resorts as well, most recently Port Orleans - Riverside and Coronado Springs. I decided the best way to experience a new deluxe resort but also stay within our budget, as well as accommodate a few more family members joining us later in the week, would be to do a split stay. We reserved a studio villa at the Polynesian directly through Disney (not DVC) for our family of four for the first four nights of our vacation and then a Cars Family Suite at Art of Animation with my in-laws added for the last three nights. We were on the Disney Dining Plan for both reservations.

***

We left before the sun came up on a Sunday to head for the airport in New Orleans, which is just under an hour from where I live in south Louisiana. The kids were great sports, and we took off and landed on time which is always great when traveling to start your vacation! (I love Southwest. Two free bags per person, early family boarding and minimal delays, in my experience!)

We checked in to Disney’s Magical Express at MCO and took the bus to our resort. I didn’t check for the exact time, but I want to say it was no more than an hour from the time we were off the plane to the time we got to our resort. I did get a text when boarding the bus that our room was not quite ready, so I planned to check with the front desk when we arrived.

When you arrive at the Polynesian, you really feel like you’re in a tropical oasis. The landscaping was beautiful, the lobby had a fresh smell, and lots of smiling cast members welcomed us to the resort. At the check in desk, I was told that our room was not yet ready but that they would text us when it became available. They gave us a few leis, which my daughter loved, and I picked up our rental stroller from the concierge, which served as a good luggage carrier for our carry on bags that we wanted to keep with us (perks of the kids getting a little older – they can walk around the resort when we need them to now!). The weather was a little chilly so we decided to get lunch and ride the monorail before jumping into the pool, since it was still before noon.

We went to Captain Cook’s, the quick service restaurant at the Polynesian, where we picked up our refillable resort mugs that are included on the dining plan and ordered lunch. My children split an order of chicken nuggets, while my husband tried the Hot Beef and Cheddar sandwich and I ordered the Pulled Pork Nachos. I have a strange pineapple allergy, but they (and every other restaurant at the Poly, we would find out) accommodated it by leaving off the pineapple salsa. The nachos were so good! The chips were house-made and wonton-like, with pulled pork, cheese, tomatoes and red onions.

After our ride on the monorail loop, we headed for the pool at the Poly, where we were able to change into our swimsuits. All of the Disney resort pools offer life vests, so we grabbed two for our kids as well as a few towels that were provided. My daughter really enjoyed the water slide, as she always does, and my son had a lot of fun on the splash pad/water playground.

Just as we got out of the pool, I received a text that our room was ready, which was perfect timing. It was around 1:30 p.m., and the kids were really ready for a nap after getting up so early for the airport. The room was everything we expected it to be – second floor in Tokelau; we couldn’t have asked for a better location! I wish I would have taken more photos of the room, but we were so tired and ready to get into the room I didn’t. We got the kids to sleep, and my husband went for a run on the path to the Grand Floridian (ambitious man, who quickly remembered you shouldn’t put any extra miles on your poor feet during a Disney vacation!) and picked up a drink for me at Tambu Lounge on the way back to the room. Cheers to an Island Sunset!

Once the kids were awake, we headed back out the gift shops, where my daughter decided she wanted to buy a pin trading starter kit with the gift card from grandma that was burning a hole in her pocket. I was actually surprised this was what she wanted, as I planned to introduce pin trading to her when she was a little older. But she was so into it, looking for just the right kit and talking to the gift shop cast member about it, that I couldn’t discourage it. This actually turned out to be one of the things that made our trip so memorable – all of the wonderful cast members taking the time to kneel down, talk to her, show her their pins… it brought tears to my eyes on more than one occasion! It really fit her personality as well, as she is so outgoing and loves to talk.

Finally, it was time for our dinner reservation at Ohana. I’ve eaten here once before, for our eleventh wedding anniversary, and I loved it – but I wasn’t so sure about bringing the kids. However, immediately upon arrival my daughter made friends with the hula instructor, who “decorated” her with extra leis and posed with her for a photo. When they dimmed the lights for Wishes, which we had a front and center view for, my son could hardly stand the excitement (in the best way!). The food was just as good as I remember (even if I had to skip a few things thanks to the aforementioned pineapple issue, but the chef was great about checking in and supplying alternative options) and they even brought extra macaroni and cheese for my son. My daughter actually ate the pork dumplings, sautéed broccoli, and skewered shrimp and steak, which surprised me! (Apologies again for the lack of photos … juggling all that food and two little ones, I had my hands full. Thank goodness I’d added Memory Maker for the big photo opportunities!)

Back in the room, we headed straight for bed. My daughter loved the twin pull-down bed that featured a sweet Lilo and Stitch, who we would be meeting the next morning…

Following along, and I must say that you're an awesome parent for not showing your kids' faces in these pictures. Well done, and very savvy.

Wow, thank you for saying that! I hoped no one would mind a bunch of pictures of the backs of their heads...
The photos are so good I didn't even notice the lack of faces. I don't even post my own face here and I'm 28, haha! I can't imagine having grown up with my parents posting my photo everywhere on the internet and then seeing that whole record of my life when I reached adulthood. (No judgment to any parents who do post faces; we all have to make our own decisions!)

I'm enjoying your report!

Just my 2 cents

I normally have not posted pictures of my children
I did in my December TR after getting their permission
And they are both adults now who regularly post on social media sites so not as big of a deal.

Thanks
Max

I have read lots of great TRs with pics of kids; it's just my personal preference not to post mine ... No right or wrong way to do it, I'd say!

More to come hopefully by tonight -- our split stay "switch" day and Hollywood Studios!

*Resort Switch Day / Hollywood Studios*

We woke up early on our last morning at the Polynesian to do some laundry and pack up the room before enjoying breakfast at Kona Café. One of my favorite things about staying at a deluxe resort is having several convenient dining options. Since we’d used all of our dining plan table service credits by this point, we planned to pay out of pocket for our breakfast.

full

My husband and I have coffee running through our veins all day every day, so we gave the Kona Press Pot a try. We really enjoyed it! It was enough for us to each have two full cups, with a little left over.

I ordered the Macadamia Pineapple Pancakes after asking the server if she could leave off the pineapple part. I know that probably sounds ridiculous, but these were still some of the best pancakes I’ve ever eaten! I used the macadamia nut butter and syrup and would have never known pineapple was supposed to be included. It came with two pieces of sausage, which I shared with my daughter.

full

My husband ordered the Big Kahuna, which he shared with the kids as well. They’d both eaten bananas in the room that we’d picked up with leftover snack credits (not the best value, but better than letting them go to waste) so they weren’t super hungry. I think they each ate a small pancake, some eggs and a little meat.

After breakfast we returned to the room to pick up our bags. We were sad to be leaving the Poly, but also excited to check out Art of Animation and the Cars Family Suites. My in-laws met us at the Poly, and then we split up for a while – my mother-in-law and I went to check us in at Art of Animation with our luggage, while my husband, father-in-law and sister-in-law took the kids to Hollywood Studios.

We decided to physically check in at Art of Animation because my father-in-law was a last minute addition and I wanted to get him added to the room reservation and dining plan before we checked in. We also had all of our luggage, which we hoped to bring into the room if it was available. If my in-laws hadn’t driven, I would have utilized bell services to transfers our luggage to the next resort while we all went to the park. It took a little work on the part of the check-in cast member at Art of Animation, but we successfully added my father in law so he’d also be on the dining plan and were able to get into our room, even though it was before 1 p.m.

After a quick text-message pow-wow with my husband, we decided to avoid bringing the kids back to the resort for a nap and instead my mother-in-law and I went to join them at the park. We met up just in time for our Toy Story Midway Mania FastPass, which is one of our favorite rides in Disney World, before heading to Star Tours. Can I just say, we really were not Star Wars fans before this trip? But after seeing the Jedi Training in action, the Star Tours ride, the March of the First order … well, let’s just say we came home with two light sabers, a Chewbacca pin and a Star Wars coffee mug. (Gotta love grandparents!)

We also squeezed in a snack break … I’ll call this shot “When you can’t decide between a Mickey bar or a Mickey pretzel.”

full

We had early dinner reservations at Minnie’s Seasonal Dine at Hollywood & Vine. It was pretty hot at 4 p.m., and we’d had the ill-timed snack break, so we weren’t terribly hungry even though I felt like the buffet offerings were pretty good. The characters were also cute in their Hollywood-themed attire.

full

We fit in the Great Movie Ride while my husband took my daughter to attempt Rock’n Roller Coaster, but the line was too long so they went to meet Chewbacca instead. Our dinner was a Fantasmic dining package, so we got ready to head in that direction with our vouchers in hand. The dinner package seating was front and center, and we really enjoyed the show. By this point, the kids hadn’t napped and it was getting late, so we high-tailed it to the bus stop and to Art of Animation.

The kids could not contain their excitement (delirium?) when we arrived at Art of Animation. I’m really glad we settled on this resort for this trip while they are still young. My son’s very favorite thing is Cars/Lightning McQueen, so he couldn’t help shouting “Lightning!” “Mater!” “Sarge!” “Doc!” as we saw the characters while walking toward our room.

From then on, in the parks and even now that we're home, he would ask if we could go back to “Radiator Springs.” Another magical memory!

I laughed out loud a few times reading so far!! Those cute little chubby hands are adorable, I couldn't help but smile at him taking a bite of pretzel then a bite of the mickey bar...it's sweet and gross at the same time. :hilarious: And lastly I'm proud of you...Ice Cream for lunch...that's what vacations are all about.:) One trip we stopped at a candy store and had candy for breakfast.

Love the pics of AoA
If your son is a big Cars fan I would suggest a trip to California
You are literally walking down Route 66 in Carsland and the Radiator Springs Racer ride is awesome

Thank you for suggesting that! My husband and I were just talking about it over the weekend. Thinking that might have to be our next Disney vacation...

*Animal Kingdom – Day 2*

We’d originally planned to go back to Epcot on Friday, but about mid-week we decided to return to Animal Kingdom instead. There were a few reasons – namely that we accomplished a lot on our Epcot day; my in-laws had never been to Animal Kingdom; and my six-year-old was begging to ride Expedition Everest again. This was enough to convince me to cancel that coveted Frozen Ever After FastPass (luckily my daughter and I got to experience this on its opening day … which is another story in itself) and reschedule our day for Animal Kingdom. This day is another example of “go with the flow” … I also canceled our Garden Grill breakfast in favor of dinner at T-Rex in Disney Springs. I had actually read a few good reviews about T-Rex lately, and this trip was kind of an early birthday celebration for my son, so we decided to give it a try.

full

We got to the park a little later than opening (maybe 9:15-9:30) but the flow into the park was actually better than the day we arrived before opening. I’d originally scheduled my daughter and husband for Everest while the rest of us went on the Safari, but I got an email saying Everest was temporarily closed. This was a bit of a bummer, but we were all able to do the Safari together since they were allowed to use that FastPass on any attraction, which was nice. Once of the Wilderness Explorer cast members told my daughter the Yeti forgot to show up for work and would be in around 10:30, which was cute.

After that, my husband and father-in-law took my son on the Wildlife Express Train and to meet Rafiki while the girls headed for Kali River Rapids. As you can see, I’m no fun at all…

full

We re-grouped for a quick snack (did you know the chicken fried rice at the counter-service Yak and Yeti Local Foods is only a snack credit?) and our FastPass for The Lion King show. We’ve seen this before, but we just love it. My in-laws were impressed.

After the show, it was definitely time for an over-due nap for my son since we’d skipped the day before. I volunteered to take him back to the resort for a nap then meet up with everyone else in Disney Springs for our early dinner reservation at T-Rex. This was my first time manning the double stroller with a child on a bus, but I had a grande iced latte from Starbucks in my hand, so I felt confident. (Also a snack credit on the dining plan … any size, any flavor!) The coffee did help to bribe my son to stand still while I collapsed the stroller and heaved it onto the bus; whether a sip of coffee before a nap was a good idea …

Turns out he was so tired, it didn’t really matter. We got in a good nap, then headed for Disney Springs to meet up with everyone else for dinner. Again, the bus service from the resort was excellent. We waited only about 10 minutes.

Once we re-grouped, I got the full run-down of what else was accomplished at Animal Kingdom – It’s Tough to be a Bug (which my daughter didn’t like … afraid of bugs but not afraid of Yetis, heights or speed), Primeval Whirl, and Expedition Everest one last time.

Dinner at T-Rex was pretty good. My husband and I were both craving burgers, even though our server (who was great) warned us this was not a good value on the dining plan. He was right, of course, but I really wanted a burger. The atmosphere was really cool, and my two-year-old was not scared of the occasional darkness/noise. My sister-in-law took them to the Build-a-Bear (Dinosaur?) in the gift shop while we waited for our entrees, which was a nice way to pass the time.

Our burgers weren’t the best we’ve ever had, but they were just what we wanted and very tasty. Other entrees ordered around the table were lasagna, barbecue and salmon, and everyone was happy with their choices. My daughter also got a burger. We all shared a little bit with my son. We each got a dessert, so I got a milkshake (I think it was called a smoothie on the menu) and it was a delicious end to the meal!

Instead of spending time at Disney Springs, which we’ve done on the two prior visits to WDW, we decided to head back to the resort so the kids could get in a swim before bedtime. They chose the Cozy Cone pool instead of the main pool and had a blast.

Then it was off to bed to rest up for our last day at the parks!

*Magic Kingdom – Day 2*

Our last day at the parks arrived quicker than we expected. Time flies when you’re having fun, right?! We set our alarms so that we didn’t miss a minute of what was left of our 2017 Disney World vacation. A quick stop for breakfast at Landscape of Flavors, and we were off to Magic Kingdom for its 8 a.m. opening.

We arrived at the park a few minutes before the welcome show began and stopped for more castle photos with the whole family. The welcome show was just ending as we approached the castle, and we walked rope-drop style to Frontierland hoping for walk-on rides on Splash Mountain and Big Thunder Mountain. It was really fun to be “escorted” all the way to our destination by cast members leading us along with a rather small rope-drop crowd. We were able to walk on to Splash and then Big Thunder Mountain, and grabbed rider swap passes for my mother-in-law who stayed behind to watch my son. The playground between these two attractions is perfectly placed, in my opinion – the toddler hardly knew he was missing out on something because he had something to do as well!

We re-grouped and headed to our breakfast reservation at Be Our Guest. This is definitely one of my favorites, and we try to schedule one meal here on each visit. We’ve done breakfast, lunch and dinner, and I feel like the best food/value is at lunch. Breakfast is a good value on the dining plan, but the charge is fairly high per person if paying out of pocket. We fueled up and continued around Fantasyland, hitting a few attractions as a big group before catching the Walt Disney World Railroad to Tomorrowland. My son LOVES the “choo-choo” and our vacation would have been complete without a ride – it was down for refurbishment earlier in the week, so this was a priority!

In Tomorrowland, we split up so the boys could go to the Speedway and the girls took a ride on the Peoplemover, which is one of my favorite things to do in Magic Kingdom.

full

After that, it was time to cross over to Adventureland for our Jungle Cruise FastPass. It has been a while since I’ve done Jungle Cruise, but it was fun for the whole family. We were approaching lunch/nap time at this point and decided to give the stroller nap theory one last effort. My inlaws took my daughter back to Frontierland to use the rider swap passes from earlier, while my husband and I headed back to Main Street for coffee and to try to get my son to sleep while we strolled the gift shops.

Would you know, on our last day, it worked! My son fell fast asleep in the stroller and my husband found a comfortable place to park it while I wandered the gift shops. Even this was magical, as we ran into the Mayor of Main Street, picked up a few birthday gifts for friends back home, and enjoyed the slow pace.

full

When my daughter returned, we caught the Dapper Dans on a walk to the restroom. Sometimes slowing down gives you time to experience things you’ve overlooked or missed out on previously!

full

Here’s a tip: I didn’t want to carry the gifts I’d picked up for the rest of the day, and we were leaving early in the morning so I couldn’t utilize the resort delivery option at the gift shop. However, they offer free package pick up at the front of the park near Guest Services, and when I visited it later that evening there was no line – it took me less than five minutes to pick up! I really liked this service.

full

When we got back to my husband, my son was waking up. We swapped kids with my inlaws, who took him to find a snack and take in a few rides while my husband and I took my daughter to her very first Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique appointment.

This was so magical! I highly recommend it for anyone traveling with little girls. My daughter has always loved dressing up, but we’ve put this experience off on previous trips until she was a little older. However, over the last year she’s dressed up less and less – and while she still loves her princesses, I was worried we might be about to miss the prime window of princess makeover opportunity. She absolutely loved and appreciated the experience! We brought her Elena of Avalor dress from home and did the basic package, which I felt was a really good value. It included a hairstyle, makeup, nail polish and a nice bag filled with the leftover makeup and nail polish as well as a few other things. PhotoPass photographers were around to take pictures throughout the experience, and her Fairy Godmother in Training was absolutely wonderful. Afterward, we passed through the Castle Couture gift shop to find the PhotoPass “photo shoot” area where they took additional pictures of our little princess all dressed up. It was precious!

full

We met up with our group again to head out of the park to the Grand Floridian for our early dinner reservation at 1900 Park Fare. My daughter and I dined here on our girls’ trip the previous summer, but I thought everyone would enjoy the great character interaction and food. It didn’t disappoint! It was also very laid back for us as we had all of the signatures on my daughter’s autograph pillowcase already, so we really got to enjoy talking to the characters and eating the yummy food!

After dinner is when we realized the stroller nap just didn’t cut it as my son began to have bathroom accidents, going through two sets of extra clothes in rapid-fire succession. My husband volunteered to take him back to the resort to get him ready for bed while the rest of us took my daughter back to Magic Kingdom for her Elena of Avalor meet and greet FastPass. She loved meeting Elena, and we got some great photos of the two of them.

We decided to call it a night after that, and headed back to the resort to start packing our bags. Our Magical Express bus would be picking us up at 6:15 a.m. for our morning flight, so I wanted to get everything organized and in bed at a decent time. We accomplished that mission, and we all fell asleep with sweet dreams of yet another successful and enjoyable Disney World vacation!

Really? Is there so much of a presence of active child stealers online that pictures will compromise their safety? I'm a single old guy who never had any kids, so this is not something that would ever occur to me.

I didn't want to point out that I wasn't using my kids' photos because I didn't want to start an issue, since this forum/report is about our WDW trip. But to answer your question, my concern is that online photos can be easily saved/re-used without permission, so I'm just a little selective about what I post publicly.

I hope everyone has enjoyed the trip report despite that!

Loving your report! We are doing the same split say in a few short weeks, only we are starting at AoA and finishing at the Poly. My youngest is two and loves all the Pixar movies. I'm nervous he isn't going to want to leave there! LOL!
