I've read references to a free dining promo on several threads.
Is this the DDP being offered as a free add-on or some other offer?
How common/frequently is it offered?
How do you find out about it?
What if it's offered after you've made your reservation?
The offer has been made to the general public for three years now. (Which is also the length of time the DDP has been around). It has only ever been offered for check-in dates from mid-to-late August through the end of September. This year the travel window open to the general public was only about 4 weeks.
The booking window was from April to mid-June.
Prior to that, they offered Free Dining to UK Residents and to on-site Guests who were willing to pre-book their next stay while still on vacation. Those guests had about a 6-week window for their trip that included mid-August. The *booking* window for those people was Nov & Dec of last year.
To purchase, you had to specifically ask for the promotion, or use the specific link on the Disney webpage to book it. It required you to book a full Disney Vacation Package including hotel and tickets for each person in your party. The package did not include the ability to apply discounts (like an AP rate) to the hotel.
If you already had a vacation package booked, you were able to call in and have it switched over to the Free Dining package, subject to availability at the resort and room type you were booked into.
As for finding out, it's discussed in GREAT length on here in the weeks and months leading up to the promo's release. (In fact, it was probably the most-talked about subject ever until the latest wand threads) :animwink:
Also once it's released, it (along with most other available discounts) are posted on mousesavers.com
