Fort Wilderness Railroad

Hmmm, I remember seeing an early poster for Ft. Wilderness that had a train on it in a book. I wondered if it once had a train line. Cool.

Wow! What a shame that the railroad isn't there anymore. Does anyone know why Disney got rid of it? It looks like it must have been a lot of fun!

I'm pretty sure this was because of derailment and safety issues because the train was so close to the campsites.......It was only open for 5 short years....someday when I'm CEO of Disney World....I'm gonna restore the railroad line and other improvments Eisner hasn't thought of......(lol):hammer:
Here are some pics of the FWRR

If I'm not mistaken, they replaced the actual cars with replicas that are better suited and have more roo,. However, I do know that there is one (albeit, on pontoons) at Typhoon Lagoon.

From the Fort Wilderness RR website
Over time the Wilderness Line started to have some operational problems. A major problem was the way in which the track was laid, 'on the fly', without using precision rail bending machine, essentially spiking the rail down around curves, so the track was constantly trying to straighten out. The result was kinks forming, especially where the rail sections met on a curve. Making track matters worse, tie plates were not used in most locations, and the rock bed was basically poured right over the tracks without tamping it down. The track conditions resulted in a few derailments. Being that Fort Wilderness was built over very soft swampy land meant that the track had to be in top condition. Serious attention was needed for the track.

I seem to recall that on a trip to WDW and on a bus ride through Ft.Wilderness that the bus driver pointed out the remnants some of the rails. I believe it was near the Meadows Trading Post.

Some of the old railroad is still there. Just past the Meadows, going toward Pioneer Hall, on the left side of the road. The track is still visible there. Actually, much of walking paths are built on the old railroad bed. My wife and I put on some jeans a few weeks ago and walked almost the entire railroad line. Some of it was hard to get to because of the overgrowth in the woods.

It is cool to see, and be a part of, some old WDW history that many people have no idea that ever existed.

I've stayed at Ft. Wilderness many times. The bus station at the front where you used to get the bus to River Country was the old train station. There is still at least one bridge from the railroad still standing, overgrown with vines. I think it is near the Meadows Trading Post.

If anyone that works at WDW can make a suggestion to someone of high importance.......it probably wouldn't do anything.......make a suggestion to restore the railroad to working order........(lol) No, really.....Im serious///

Unfortunetly, this would not be a good idea. The website linked in the first page makes a really good case as to why it was taken out.

Aside from maintenance, think about this: The train path comes VERY close to campsites. Add in the noise from the train, and the fact that it would have to run late at night and early in the morning, and you'll have a LOT of upset guests.

All I got was some hotmail garbage.

At any rate, the railroad would be way too noisy for the campground these days, and wouldn't be as efficient as the buses.

(BTW, our new Gilligs with the Cummins ISL are whisper quiet!)
