Fort Wilderness GETS a little bit bigger! UPDATE!

I know that the pool thing might have been already posted but I thought the rest was great news!

Fort Wilderness renovations/upgrades on the way

MousePad poster Mousellaneous found out about a planned renovation for the Fort Wilderness Resort and Campground. The renovation project slated to take three to five years will include a new pool area in the next year and a half, which may be inspired by the themed pool at Disney's Hilton Head Island Resort, including a slide and a hot tub. About a dozen new campsites will also be added, featuring wider and longer campsites.

UPDATE

Fort Wilderness renovations/upgrades confirmed
As we reported a couple of months ago, the Fort Wilderness Resort and Campground will be receiving a major upgrade. The announcement from Disney last week confirmed all items that we reported, as well as some additional into.

There will be an intensive effort to widen and lengthen the concrete parking pads to address the fact that the average length of a recreational vehicle has increased by 27 feet since the campground opened, many with "slide-out" extensions. New "premium" campsites will be available, featuring not only extra large concrete pads for larger vehicles but also upgrades to existing amenities such as picnic tables and grills.

The main pool will see the addition of a themed water slide, a hot tub and a children's web play area. The pool's deep end has also been made shallower. The 409 Wilderness Cabins have all received new furniture, carpeting, fixtures and linens, as well as a fresh coat of paint. There's a new doggie playground at the new Waggin' Trails Dog Park, an off-leash play area.

-------------------
just last month we were at one of the new Cabins and the fixtures, and furniture looks great...and the TVS are very nice and big!

We will have to check out the doggie area...here is the link for the news! http://www.mouseplanet.com/articles.php?art=wd080317mg

BTW- You can edit your title if you do Edit and then Advanced.

Hilton Head Island is a rather upscale place.
If they copy it then the new look should be OK.

Tks.

Having wider and longer campsites to back into will be a plus. On my last trip to FW I was asked to participate in a survey on FW and the first question was how can Disney improve the campground. My reply; install wider campsites. I love FW but backing in a 30 foot camper is no fun. I'm glad Disney is finally taking some action on this. The pool area is nice but an upgrade to it will be cool.

From my understanding this may actually be happening. If true, a new pool area would be nice, maybe gets rid of RC

^^ I think they should do something with RC. It would make a nice trail area. Maybe they can keep some of the old themeing in, that would be cool. They also could put the new pool over there replacing that old slide pool. That would also allow them to use the old quick service restaurant area again.

omg!!!! such great news! i always thought that us campers should have a better pool. my dad will like the bigger sites. he is one of the crazy people that loves to put up decorations every xmas. hehehe. I enjoy FW and always hoped they would expand and put in a better pool. the one thing though it to put the pets back in 1 area cause im allergic to pets and it always seems i am next one which is not always fun... other than that i am excited.

I think they should just raze the place and develop a whole new DVC resort. Maybe one with a camping THEME, where each studio unit resembles a tent, 1 BR resembles a larger tent, 2 BR would look like two large tents stitched together, and they can recycle the cabins for Grand Villas. But if you're not DVC, room rates start at $300. After all, who goes to Disney to CAMP?

Ah, to troll...to live! :p

Slappy, you missed the point of trolling. It is to sound serious as to not give away the fact you are actually trolling.

Anyway, I wish they would build a new arcade building. As Disney is probably the only corporation in the world that can afford new arcade machines.

Great to hear! I spent my first Disney vacation at Fort Wilderness (stayed in one of the cabins, wish I could have camped though) last year and had one of the best weeks of my life. I wasn't that impressed by the pool there now, but after looking at the Hilton Head pictures the plans look promising. :)

Actually many do...and if they ever remove it for a stupid DVC I'll be very very mad!!:fork: Not everyone is a DVC member! And they have built so many of those stupid area and is one of the main reason its difficult to get into certain resorts because most of it is DVC. Sorry but it just frustrates me so much when I see so much importance on this "club"

Didn't they try that already? Didn't they put tent like structures in trees and call them villas? Glad to hear from you Slappy!

I'm so glad to hear this! We really liked staying in the cabins but missed having a nice pool. The pool at Hilton Head is nice, but it would have to be quite a bit bigger at FW. I also think it would be great if they put in a counter service restaurant. We were on the meal plan while we were there but lost a lot of counter service credits as we could'nt spend them in FW.

Heading for the great escape.
If they make it bigger there will be even more operchancity top complain about how big it is and how bad the bus services are. Hoorrahh.

Thank god!

We stay at Ft Wilderness a lot in our camper and enjoy it tremendously.

However the pool situation is TERRIBLE. Compared to every other disney resort pool its the worst. Your very basic simple cement pond. This will make my family VERY happy and we wont have to resort "sneaking" into wilderness lodge anymore.

Not that we would do that...

I don't understand campers

My neighbors are campers and I get to watch their cats while they go off wherever for three to six weeks. They generally stop at 3 or 4 campgrounds and pull their bus-like "motor coach" into a pull-through space that's about 10 feet from the next coach on either side. Then they unwind the awning, set out the folding chairs and "enjoy life". I guess that means jawing with other people who own busses made into low-ceilinged apartments.

Their cats have a much more understandable notion of fun, as far as I can tell. They chase each other around the house and break things.

But back on thread... my neighbors did spend a week or so in Ft. Wilderness with various grandkids in tow. I figured they would say it was the greatest campground ever! But no, their response was a hearty wdwmagic.com "meh".

They complained that the pool was in fact too plain. They didn't like having to ride shuttle busses or rent a pargo. They said that even their "premium" space was waaaay too small. From what they could tell, people drove much smaller RV's back in the 70's when Ft. Wilderness opened.

They and the grandkids loved the campfire events and the pony rides. The older kids enjoyed tooling around in the somewhat pricey pargo (electric cart) that they rented by the day.

I believe my neighbors - currently on a Disney cruise - would agree the rumored changes are just about due.

And the only bed bugs are the ones you bring with you!

No unpacking, prepare your own meals in a home away from away. Yep, it's really terrible.
