Fort Wilderness Christmas No Car

We have some extra days for our Christmas trip this year - we've always heard the Christmas lights people set up at Fort Wilderness are pretty fun. We've also wanted to try Trail's End as it usually gets good reviews.

We will not have a rental car though - is it worth trying to walk around this resort or is it too big? I've heard there's an area at the entrance with buses that drive you through the different areas of the resort - anyone's thoughts on if this would be a cool way to see any Christmas lights or if in general there is anything else to do there?

I don't want to get there and essentially turn right around again. We've already done most of the other resorts on property and plan on doing our favorites again - just thought it could be fun to add this one in as well.

Thanks

If your family isn't used to a decent bit of walking, it may be a bit much to walk the whole thing. That being said, years ago we stayed there during the Christmas season. Most of the lights, not all, were centered around the camper section. My mom and I would walk through there almost every night. It was lovely.

Maybe use the bus to tour the best areas, then get off at the stops with the most interesting displays?

Maybe we'll try that out - we are definitely not afraid of a little (or a lot) of walking. Thanks.

Actually, the best decorated campsites are in close proximity to the Settlement Depot (where Trails End is located.) This is where the large RVs/campers park. We take the boat from MK to Ft. Wilderness, make the short walk to dinner at Trail's End and afterwards walk around and enjoy the decorations.

Last year we booked a sleigh ride through the displays which was very fun.

I suggest you pull up Ft Wilderness on Google maps... it will show you where the various bus stops are in the campgrounds and you can use google maps to measure the distances.... I know that just walking from the trading post near the beach and the trading post near the center of the campsites is a little over half a mile. We made the mistake of walking from a cabin to the beach when we stayed there once and quickly realized that talking wasn't a real option its just too dang far from one place to another. If you just want to see the lights campers have set up I would suggest you use a bus to get you to a stop near the meadows trading post and then just walk around that area a bit.... I wouldn't want to walk the whole campsite or even half of it... too much walking and a reason that they rent the golf carts to people in the resort.

I have stayed at Fort Wilderness a few times for Christmas, and also visited it a few times for the Christmas lights. They won’t rent you a golf cart or bike unless you are staying there, but the inter-resort bus system is free for all to use. You can check the bus route online or at any of the bus stops. The yellow bus goes around one side of the resort, purple goes around the other, and orange goes straight through the middle, and all buses loops start/end at the Setttlement Depot (restraint/shop/boat dock) or the Outpost Depot (Main entrance).

You can get to Fort Wilderness by using any of the free transportation options, bus from any of the main transportation depots (Magic Kingdom, Epcot, Hollywood Studios, Animal Kingdom, Disney Springs, Water Parks), or by boat from one of the boat docks (Green flag boat is direct from Magic Kingdom) and (Blue flag boat from the Contemporary Resort or Wilderness Lodge).

There are always two main areas that are almost always a must see for lights, the 1200 loop, and the 1600 loop. The 1200 loop has an individual that always brings a different exotic car, and their friends that always do a nice job of decorating that loop. The 1600 loop has an individual that setup a walk-through area of decorations that can be seen from the main road. The 1700/1800/1900 loops are in close proximity to the 1600 loop, and also are usually done nicely, so it’s worth the walk.

Once you get Fort Wilderness get on the yellow bus to head to the bus stop that is outside of the 1600/1700/1800/1900 loops, and then walk around the corner to the 1200 loop when done, or get on the orange bus to take you to the 1200 loop, and walk around the corner to the 1600/1700/1800/1900 loops when done. Bus stops are located in close proximity to every group of loops, so you can ride the buses around to see if there are any other loops that you would like to explore. I would avoid taking the purple bus loop, it's mainly used for the cabin area, they hardly ever have anything good. Comfort Stations are located at most all loops for public restrooms.
