Fort Langhorn Escape Tunnel

Disney ought to reboot a Tom and Huck movie. With the right script, it could be a heck of a movie....and it would definitely make the Island relevant to today's audiences.

I too, was disappointed to see the Escape Tunnel closed last week. I was hoping that it was just for a quick refurb, but I also wondered if someone had been "stuck" in that tunnel. Sadly, in today's supersized world, many would not be able to get through the final 10 feet or so. I'm still hoping this is just temporary.

I was about to say that it was recently remade...but that was 18 years ago!

Was it with the kid from Home Improvement and Lion King fame (can't think of his name-Jonathan somebody?)

That was Jonathan Taylor Thomas (born Jonathan Taylor Weiss). Speaking of Fort Longhorn escape tunnel, I saw in the attractions magazine photo finds video that the escape tunnel sign has been removed and a door with no hinges is up. The door also has screws in place on the sides. Here's a picture from miceage to show what it looks like as of late April 2013:

When I peeked into that window on the right (you can see down the stairs), last week, I noticed that all the lights were still on (yet there was nobody home).

This isn't the place, but IMHO, Disney needs to do more for boys and Tom and Huck are perfect. While the books are incredible they are not for grade school children to read. Which is part of the reason kids, 12 and under might wonder who Tom is, they aren't old enough to read about him from Twain, yet. As a Mom to a very Tom like 9 year old boy, outside playing, bath hating, fishing all the time boy, he would love a non lame movie or heck Disney Channel show about Tom and Huck. My son loves Disney and will tolerate the Princesses for his sisters sake but I think there needs to be more for him. Heck, Frontier Land has most of the merchandise...oh dear am picturing boys pelting poor CM's with popcorn from sling shots, ok maby not all merch...

Tom and Huck are being written out of commonly taught literary history in schools because their books have been deemed racist due to certain terms and mentalities used in them.

And no, I don't want this to get political, I'm just stating the facts.

They are taught int the 8th Grade Honors class at my Children's school, as mine are in 3rd and 2nd grade we have not covered them yet. I have heard school districts are taking Tom and Huck off the reading list, which is a shame. Love banned books and will have my children read them...

My question is...why "Honors"? Next on the list is To Kill A Mockingbird, and in 20 years it will be 1984 and Animal Farm.

It just makes me sad.

Not sure, we aren't there yet...I saw the summer reading list when I watched my nephew this summer for the weekend. Perhaps it is on the other reading list as well. It is a smallish Catholic School with about 400 students, I do know thier are two 8th grade tracts, one honors and one High School Prep. That is about it...right now we are tackling multiplication tables and the Long Winter by Laura Ingles Wilder;) Have a long way to go before 8th grade.
Anyway I think Tom and Huck have much more life in them, am looking the 90's version to see if my 9 and 8 year could watch it on the drive down to WDW in 22 days. Told DH we need to make TSI and must do in this trip, all of mine, 9,8,4 and 3 will love it. Our last two trips we did not go over...can't remember why...

A Catholic school is not public, and there is a reason why I'm putting away money every year to send my kid to private school when she hits the middle grades. Google "Atlanta School Fraud" and you'll see why I don't want her anywhere near Public Schools past a certain grade, and that's beyond my own personal experience with them when I moved back to the US and learned that it's more important to be cool and accepted, than it is to actually learn anything (thanks US schools!)...

If this is the way the island is going then I'd rather they just clear it drain the river and put a major E ticket or small attractions here. Seems like wasted space if they are blocking everything up.

We live in KY, and while there are some good public schools here and there we ultimately choose private, many of the same reasons your are choosing too in Atlanta. It is not easy for us to pay tution but we know it is worth every penny. Perhaps we could stay at a delux one fly down to WDW with the money we spend on tution but we are fine with the values and driving and knowing are kids are learning.
As for ROA and Tom's Island, it does sit on a large plot of prime real estate, hate to them go. There is something about the Liberty belle and TSI that are so Disney, what could replace them theme wise?

Would anyone object to Tom Sawyer Island getting a Lone Ranger make over? If the movie goes over as well as I hope...this may be a great fit! I agree with everyone thought, Tom & Huck were mainstays in my childhood. I can remember exploring that entire island as a kids and running the images from the book through my head the entire time and sometimes actually thinking "this is where it really happened!" Unfortunatley, political correctness and a downward spiraling education system has made Tom & Huck almost completely obosolete to our children's generation.
