For Orlando area residents....

Is there a certain time of year when the whole tourist situation can become REALLY annoying for locals? I'm on Cape Cod so of course, it's the summer. I know Orlando does not become a ghost town like the cape can be the rest of the year, but I was wondering what your version of "Cape Cod summer" is.

Yep... like this year, last year... the year before that, and the y... :lookaroun

But seriously... to me it doesn't matter... but I know people who do get annoyed by tourists... ALL YEAR LONG...

I guess if it got too annoying, those cities could just shut themselves down to tourism. Then you probably wouldnt have to worry about much since most of the surrounding businesses would close that directly rely on tourism. Then your retail and resteraunt business would drop off, so you could just eat at home all the time. Sooner or later, you might just have the whole place to yourself.

People that complain about "tourism" need to remember that this is a free country and they can move if they want to. Im sure there is a nice small town in Montanna that no one visits......

Orlando does have a year round tourist industry....

unlike Cape Cod, which sometimes feels like it has a 15 minute tourist industry! Sometimes I think "why do people get all excited over sand and water?" There seems to be far more to do and see in the Orlando area-- but does even all that get old real quick if you live there?

think about your income taxes

I was out with one of my friends who has lived in the area for about 8 years when someone close to use starting complaining about all the tourist cluttering the city. My friend quietly reminded the person that the only reason Florida doesn't have personal income tax is because of all the "annoying" tourist who come to Orlando and leave their money behind when they go home. He also suggested that if the person insists on killing the goose that is laying the golden egg he should leave the are or perhaps he could make up the budget shortfall personally.

I don't understand why people would get upset. Metro Orlando is like another world compared to the tourist/theme park area. Once you go north of the Millenia Mall, under the giant Orlando bridge you're pretty much out of the tourist area (except for the ever popular HolyLand). I live with the Magic Kingdom in my backyard (fireworks every night) and hardly notice the tourists in the general area (and I get annoyed by everyone). Unless you live here and do all of your local activities on I-Drive, then I can't see how you'd ever even notice.

Well just being a Florida resident, driving through Orlando I know to avoid I-4 when universal and wdw parks are closing. God bless Turkey Lake

Its about time those folk moved out - it it wasn't for WDW and the tourist (overseas or USA) then Florida's economy wouldn't be as healthy as it is now

MayKit, I feel your pain. I vacation on the Cape every year and I dread the ride to my destination. It's amazing the Cape doesn't sink into the Atlantic on those summer months.
I grew up in Salem, the Witch City. I now live in the next town but very near the city line. I live on one of 2 major roads into Salem and I just dread Halloween. On Halloween night the party traffic in front of my house is just awful. I have to stay up half the night kicking revellers out of my yard as it's not a public restroom nor a place to dispose of trash and beer cans. :brick:
That's why I'm excited to be going to WDW during the Halloween season. :sohappy:
As much as I appreciate the tourism dollar, I just wish at times that tourism would repect that this is where I live. :D

I also used to vacation in the Cape growing up---we would go in June and sometimes in October-what a difference!
It seems now that there is no real downtime here in Orlando-yes, it is significantly less crowded now than it was even a month ago. But, there are always conventions and European tourists.
I think that it's just a great luxury living here that you can pick and choose when you want to go to Disney. I can't wait for October, when it cools down slightly (to around 85) and we can walk around the parks with minimal crowds. It's like my fiancee said-why even go now during the summer/easter/spring break times when it's hotter than anything and the crowds are unbearable. We now just stay away from that.

The only place they are annoying is on the road...the other day there was a car going down the wrong side of the road, and I don't think they were from Europe.

Its kinda a "catch 22".

I know the locals get aggrivated with tourists but keep in mind if u take away any of the reasons why tourists come to central Fla(Disney,Universal, etc) there would be no orlando as we know it.Being it is in Central Fla with no beaches it would still more than likely be a small cow town like it was prior to WDW.-I have a freind who grew up in Orlando in the 60s and said before Disney it was literally a small boring cow town with one of the biggest industries being agriculture.

Well, over in Daytona Beach two events that annoy me are Bike Week and the Daytona 500. I think both events are cool(Was in the pre-show for the 500, and really enjoyed seeing it), but when the 500 hits traffic is horrible. As for Bike Week, I get woken up really early that entire week to bikes ripping by campus, it's very distracting and often annoying.

As another person from Daytona Beach (well, Ormond Beach, but it's the same area) I can say that these two events can get out-of-hand. I enjoy the race atmosphere because lots of my friends come into town, but bike week is very distracting! It will be even more distracting now that bike week is in "Destination Daytona", which ironically enough is in Ormond Beach, just north.

As far as WDW goes, it dosen't really bother me.

In both situations, I realize how important these events are to our economy. Bike week is bigger for us than race week (economy wise), but they are both very important. But at least I live near WDW, where I can go to escape Bike Week (Which I often do)!

I only get annoyed at the tourists while im grocery shopping. All i want to do is buy my food and not have to fight through junior and his 17 sisters who are all throwing a temper tantrum that they cant have Kellog's Sugary bowls of Sugar and chocolate frosting for breakfast.....

That and the random U-Turners who like to nearly cause accidents. Other than that, i welcome them and their money. :D

I welcome tourists and their money. I just wish they would stop getting lost in my neighborhood.

I live in Miami and in the summer times it could get a bit crowded. In the winter we have Canadians coming down here from the cold winter so I know what it is to have tourist all year round. I don't let them get to me and if I know that on a certain day there are going to be large crowds I just avoid the location and go at a later date. I am just thankful that we have tourist that enjoy what we Floridians take for granted since we are here all year long.
