These can be so hard to prove, unless there are a few reported cases that can be linked.

Last fall, a coworker and I both got very sick after eating from a Chicken place here in Columbus. The commissioner of Columbus Public Health happens to be a friend of mine, so one call to her and they started looking. It turned out that at least a dozen people reported getting sick after eating there that day. The culprit: Norovirus.

If "so many cases" of food-borne illness at WDW were true, there is no way they would still be open. They mostly cater to high-risk groups (children and elders). There are very specific HACCP procedures that are taken into account when preparing food.. and TWDC will not hire someone who is unaware of those guidelines.

Somewhere buried in these threads months back we were discussing people getting sick while on the African Trek. Today RA Peterson stated on twitter that

33% of the 617 guests who went on Wild African Trek between June/August of 2012 became ill.

Jicama and Melon Balls apear to be the responsible food items :p

I can't find the thread, could have been in a trip report I guess.

During our recent trip to WDW (14th Christmas in a row at Fort Wilderness), one of my daughters and myself came down with food poisoning after a meal at a certain Disney property restaurant. We both became ill within 5 minutes of each other and ended up in the hospital. We were the only two that had this specific food. The doctors at the hospital ruled out stomach flu and pointed the finger at food-borne illness. Despite insurance, we are out $5-6000 for uncovered expenses and the extra two nights we had to stay at WDW until we recovered.

My question is how to deal with Disney in the claims process. They have been less than cooperative and seem to be stonewalling us to some degree. Some of the managers at the restaurant have refused to even speak with us anymore (and we were not being difficult with them, just asking questions). We have made it clear we are not suing them, but just want our out-of-pocket expenses covered.

Any suggestions or contact names that might be helpful?

Thanks!

I am so sorry to hear of your food poisoning experience! What terrible memories for your family, a real nightmare!
I am presently at Disney and also got food poisoning at the Food and Wine Festival from the Africa kiosk. I informed Disney in hopes they would look into this before anyone else had to suffer - ruining a very expensive trip. I was never even acknowledged! I can't believe how negligent Disney is. Disney has proven to be nothing less than criminal, void of any human compassion, quite the opposite of what they are selling.
If any good can come from your experience maybe it will be your daughter growing up knowing right from wrong and very aware of the wolves in sheep's clothing lesson.
All the best to you!

How do you know that food made you ill? Being the last thing you ate is far from solid evidence.

Most food borne illnesses take between 16-48 hours for symptoms to occur. I work in the food industry and people try to make claims that our food has gotten them sick before but about 95% of the time it's something they had eaten earlier in the day or te day before that got them sick. If only you an your daughter reported an illness and not anyone else it's most likely not the Disney food you ate, but something else.

A lot of people do not understand the time table for illness to occur.

Agree, if something reacts that fast with them, then it must have been some sort of Allergic reactions.

Also, I understand that a lot of people seem to love their meats dripping red(almost raw).. whasup with that?

Our last trip both my daughter and I came down with something that had us both vomiting for hours at a time. We lost 3 days of the trip, and checking with guest services was met with nothing but, well a flu ir something is going on. I would exoect a kittle more interest on theirpart on cchecking the restaurant we suspected

It could have been the flu. It seems unlikely you and your DD were the only people who got food poisoning.

Have had the flu, this was no flu, and they could still handle it better. Also how do we know only my daughter and I got sick?
And how do you know it was the restaurant you suspect that made you ill? How do you know you even had a food-borne illness and not something else with similar symptoms? This is why establishments do not take much notice of these claims, because there are far too many variables which are compounded by widespread, false beliefs amongst the populace.

Three other thoughts:

A large percentage of food poisonings are due not to the ingredients used in the dish, but the unwashed hands of those who prepared or handled the food (or washed in lukewarm water and then use the handle that's been used by many who don't wash at all to leave the loo). People who handle food should wash their hands in water that's almost too hot to use and lather with soap for a minimum of 30 seconds (and count) and touch nothing that might have been in contact with fecal matter (like a bathroom handle).

If there's a time range of when food poisoning could have happened, that entire time range could have been spent eating Disney food.

People who have food allergies need to bring these up every time they eat out if they have a huge sensitivity to something - ordering something that doesn't contain it isn't enough.
