Flying Southwest

I've been to WDW with my sons for the last 5 years in a row. I've never had problems getting decently priced airline tickets yet. Until now that is. Pretty much the cheapest I am finding right now are on Southwest. Has anyone flown them, and what was your experience? Thanks!

I fly Southwest pretty much exclusively... since they're always the cheapest fares from my hometown to Orlando.

A lof of people are offputted by their "cattle call" boarding... but I like it because I can pick for myself where I'd like to sit.

And soon they will be changing the way they seat where you get a line number based on when you check in.. which I think is great because I usually check in exactly 24 hours before my flight!

Other than that... I've never had any problems with any staff... they're usually extremely friendly and I've had some great flight crews. I don't believe I've ever had any complaints flying with them... and I do quite often!

If you understand how Southwest operates, and realize that it's not really like other airlines, you'll be fine.

As the other poster mentioned, some people just can't get past not having an assigned seat. But with the upcoming changes to their boarding procedures, I think you get the best of both worlds. It'll stop people from lining up early to get the first choice of seats (as happens now with people camping out for an hour on the floor at the gate). Now you can sit and relax and line up only when it's time to board. But it's still open seating, so you can sit wherever you want to once you're on the plane. If you check in online exactly 24 hours before your flight, you're just about guaranteed to be one of the first on the plane.

They're also consistently the cheapest flight option for me. This December I'll be flying round trip for $137 from Manchester to Orlando. And that's with taxes! The cheapest I've ever flown that route was $109 round trip.

They're also very accommodating with changing flights. When I first booked my upcoming flights, I'd procrastinated when the sale was announced. When I went to book it two days after the sale started, I couldn't get my preferred flight times. I settled for other flights because it was still a great fare. But then the next afternoon I checked again, and the flights I wanted had availability again. Because the fare was exactly the same for both, it was quite simple to just change my flights over. If that had been just about any other airline, that easily would have been $100 to change those flights. Same with cancelling a flight. No fees, they just give you the dollar-amount you paid as credit toward any other flight within 1 year of the original purchase date.

Do they offer any kind of food on the long flights? I remember hearing once that they only had peanuts, and thanks to this thread I'm now thinking about a trip from Tampa to LAX :D

We like flying on Southwest. They do offer peanuts and other type snack foods. We have had stuff like baked Cheetos and pretzels before. The drinks are the standard offerings with a choice of purchasing alcohol. I have got to say the crew on each of the Southwest flights have always been happy and entertains the passengers to make the flight pass quicker.

I love Southwest. The Customer Service is wonderful and the flights have always been pleasant. I've flown them from Buffalo to Orlando and vice versa numerous times and never once have I had a poor flight due to customer service.

I fly Southwest a lot myself. No real food is provided, just snack food.
No real entertainment (movies, etc). However, download "Ding!" for your desktop, and just wait for the deals... I have flown visitors from NY to FL for $110 round trip.
I am also looking forward to the changes in the boarding procedure, as I couldn't stand people waiting an hour in the "A" line.

I hope you get a spectacular deal!

I hate Southwest! I've flown them before and never was impressed with anything, but until the last trip, I'd just kind of tolerated their mediocre service. However, on the LAST flight (that I'll ever take with them), they had way overbooked what appeared to be all their flights, leaving many ppl stranded at the airport for hours, including a disabled lady who said she flew into the airport at 8:30 that morning, was bumped from her 9:15 flight out, was still there at 6:45 that evening, and was told she wouldn't be able to fly out until "sometime tomorrow"; SW didn't even offer to help her find lodging for the night! Then they boarded a plane, ran it out on the tarmac, and proceeded to leave it sitting there for 3 hours. After 45 mins., they came on and announced they were waiting for a new flight crew to arrive. They never offered any drinks or refreshments and glared at a lady who took a little girl (about 3 yo) to the bathroom. Then they asked everyone to remain in their seats until the flight took off. A 5:00 final destination became a 10:30 arrival. They did not apologize or offer to compensate in any way (like another airline had when they experienced similar, but not as severe, difficulties). Maybe this is another example of you get what you pay for, but I now avoid SW at all costs.

I only fly southwest. They are great. You don't have assigned seats you get a letter instead. A B or C and then there is pre boarding. That is for people in wheelchairs and parents traveling with children under 5. Then A boards and so on. They are quick and they never over book a flight. I've seen fares as low as 59$ for Disney. I love them I would never fly anyone else.

We fly Southwest all the time and have never had a problem.

Does anyone know when the new boarding procedure is set to start?

We will be flying Southwest out of Manchester NH to Orlando in 43 more days.:sohappy::sohappy::sohappy::sohappy:

From what I understand, it's Oct 15th rolling out in Dallas... with more airports to come soon! I'm going to Dallas in a couple of weeks... so I'll give a report on how the new boarding goes down! :)

I've flown Southwest just once and that was more than enough for me.

I basically describe it as a flying coach bus. I felt that the service was so/so at best, the plane was dirty and crammped and on the flight I took ended up having two stops before my destination (although I can probably blame my Travel Agent for not being clear about that one).

Nevertheless for the $40 or $50 I might save flying Southwest is not worth it for the cruddy experience and the time it takes to complete a flight with them.

My opinion is if you can avoid flying with them I would. And I don't think them changing their boarding procedures will change my opinion.

Good luck with your decision.

We've flown Southwest a couple of times.

I really don't like their "herd" style of seating.

The other problem I had was during Hurricane Katrina. We were stuck in Florida and couldn't get back to New Orleans. During the aftermath of the storm , and before all the pics came out, no one really knew how terrible it was in New Orleans. The agents at Southwest kept pushing our return flight back with the reasoning that "the airport is closed." I had no problem with that....

I did have a problem, however, when I asked whether the SW agent knew when the airport would re-open and was told "Maybe you shouldn't take my family on vacation during Hurricane season." Not cool....not nice...

We have flown once SW since Katrina and I found the crew to be friendly.

We fly Southwest often, and I love them. I really don't understand why people get upset about the seating - we've never had a problem with it, and frankly even the "C" passengers arrive at their destination at the same time as the "A" ones. The other thing I love about them is their committment to the communities they serve, and their overall customer service. We did have a minor problem with them once, which was actually not their fault, but more the problem with the Philly airport, but when I called them about it after the flight, they immediately took action and partially refunded us for our troubles.

Thanks everyone for the replies. I am not as concerned about the way SW does seating. I do like how they seem to be on time with most of their flights. I have not had good luck in the past couple of years with flights being on time. I do have DVC, and being able to get boarding passes at the resort is pretty nice. They don't do that with SW yet. I also am not getting any kind of deal on the tickets like others here seem to get. I think I might be saving $100 total for the trip and that is roundtrip with three tickets. Again, I do appreciate all of the comments and I guess I will just have to keep looking and hope a promotional deal comes up somewhere, be it SW or anyone else.

I don't mind flying Southwest. I usually stick to our hometown airline Midwest Airlines but when their fare is really expensive I will make the trip down to Chicago to fly Southwest--sometimes you can't beat their fares. I recently flew Southwest again and was very impressed the flight attendants were very nice offering several drinks and then came around again with water and coffee. And I am very happy that they changed the family boarding so that the "A" group goes first then family boarding.
