Florida License Plates

I've been contemplating getting a specialty tag from my state (Florida) and was wondering why we have tags for everything from helping to save the large mouth bass to Florida being the Golf capital of the world but nothing Disney related? Can you imagine how many Florida residents would give their left arm for a Disney license (a real one not a test track one that says 2goofee:lol: )? I think we should send a letter to Tallahassee begging them to make a Disney one. Could you imagine all the possibilities that could be brought up? It would be nice to have one with Walt holding Mickey's hand or something! Maybe I'm a little obsessed!:hammer:

I'm sure they have thought about doing that, but maybe were unsuccsufel in getting the rights, or, if there was Disney then there would have to be for the Bush parks, Universal, Cypress gardens, hell even Fun Spot. Plus, if they did a plate for Disney how much more would it be? And we already have almost (in my mind) the largest variety of plates then any other state. Just put a mickey head over your orange on your plate and then you have a Disney plate!

As a Florida resident, I will be the first to say that we have way too many damn plates as it is without the need for more!

And the plates all benefit some not-for-profit organization or entity. Florida law does not allow for a buisness venture or corporation to be represented on a license plate.

I'm with you. I really dislike vanity plates too!

As a Florida Resident, I can say that it's my choice where and on what I spend my money... and if I want a vanity tag, I'll get one.

I'm having trouble understanding why people hate the tags. It's the freedom to support a cause you believe in...what's wrong with that? If they had a tag for the national association of booger eaters and I supported that cause, I'd buy one too!

I think the state would OK a Disney Tag if it were to benefit a Cancer Society, or AIDS research, or something of the sort. I mean, even the Pro Sports tags go to Charitable foundations. The John Lennon Imagine Plate on my car goes towards the Florida Food Bank

Acctually they did have a Disney plate when Disney World was celebrating it's 25th aniv. It was gold and had a mikey head on it and had sparkles, it looked really cool. Unfort they limited the production to just 50 plates.

are you sure about that now... I'm searching public records, and in 1995-1997, the new designs introduced were:

Invest In Children
Florida Arts
Professional Sports Teams
Florida Supports Education
Indian River Lagoon
Bethune-Cookman College
Florida Agricultural
Girl Scout
Boy Scouts of America
Police Athletic League
Largemouth Bass

According to The Fast Track to Vehicle Services Facts: 1999 Edition, some law enforcement officials in at least nine responding jurisdictions - Alabama, California, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Minnesota, Utah and Virginia - have expressed concern about specialty plates. As some law enforcement officials in California and Minnesota have pointed out, the more plate variation in one state, the more difficult it is for officers to quickly recognize the state that issued the plates. Law enforcement officials Iowa and Utah expressed concern about the difficulty in recognizing invalid or illegitimate specialty plates. The remainder of the nine states also indicated that problems arise given the number and diversity of specialty plates.

Another problem often mentioned by law enforcement officials in The Fast Track to Vehicle Services Facts is that they can be difficult to read, due generally to color schemes and design. Officials in at least 11 states - Alabama, Arizona, Colorado, Iowa, Maine, Massachusetts, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas and Vermont - mentioned this as a concern. In addition, law enforcement officials point out that specialty plates often duplicate license plate numbers that already have been issued. This has been a problem for at least six states, including Alabama, Idaho, Massachusetts, New York, Ohio and Wyoming.

An additional concern among some organizations, policymakers, and citizens is that states should not sanction political statements through the issuance of certain controversial special interest plates. One example of this debate recently manifested itself in Florida. On June 8, 1999, Governor Jeb Bush approved House Bill 509, which allows a new "Choose Life" specialty plate. The plate will cost an additional $20 above the regular fee and the money will go to not-for-profit adoption agencies. The new law, supported by various religious and social conservative groups such as the Christian Coalition of Florida, explicitly prohibits profits from the sale of the specialty plates form going to any agencies that support abortion as an alternative to adoption.

Another controversial bill regarding special interest plates (at least during the preliminary stages) was Virginia House Bill 1305, approved on March 29, 1999. This bill allows the issuance of a special license plate for members of the Sons of Confederate Veterans, but prohibits any logo or emblem from being incorporated into the design of the specialty plate. The Virginia House of Delegates voted to remove the Confederate flag from the Sons of Confederate Veterans' plate after concern was expressed by the legislature's black caucus. During the discussion, it was mentioned that Maryland and North Carolina specialty plates with the Confederate flag were approved and upheld by the courts.

Because of the increase in specialty plates in many states, more than 30 states require that an organization guarantee a certain number of sales before a specialty plate can be issued. In Florida, for example, a specialty plate proposal now requires a survey from the organization with 15,000 names of individuals who are interested in purchasing the new specialty plate, a $60,000 application fee to cover departmental expenses relating to reviewing the application and design, and an analysis of the financial impact and marketing strategies for the new license plate. After departmental review, the Florida Legislature then must approve the proposed specialty plate.

Funny you mention that Woody. I guess it's too hard for the officer to read your vehicle registration when pulling you over.

Ironically, when I was ticketed a while back, the officer wrote me down as having Mississippi plates on my car.

I am 99.9% sure about that, I clearly remember CNN or Fox talking about and they showed it on the TV. I may be wrong about the 25th anv. but I know they had one that only 50 were made.

You beat me to it Woody. I knew there was a big issue for law enforcement officers being able to quickly identify a cars origin based on the license plate. It was also discussed that private citizens were giving incorrect descriptions due to the confusion over the vast numbers of plate designs we have in Florida. It seems that nearly every college and professional sports franchise as well as many special interest and NFP groups have their own plate. The last time I was at the DMV nearly the entire wall was full of different plates that were available.

On a more personal note I would love a Disney plate. The money could go th the Make a Wish Foundation.

I am sorta new to these threads as I didn't want to be attacked by the posters on these threads:zipit: , but can't they do a plate for "Disney Hand", isn't that Disney's non-profit organization that does community service and stuff like that? Just curious.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS TO ALL!

OFF TOPIC:

Back "in the old days" license plates were easy to I.D. Florida had yellow tags, Virginia had tags that were black on white one year and the next year they were white on black. The tags were simple and stark and you could I.D. the state origin on a moving vehicle even if it was traveling at a high rate of speed (anyone ever play "license plate bingo" on a trip?).

Today, you've got to have encyclopedic knowledge to figure out from which state these tags originate. This is a big part of the so called, "Homeland Security" problem we have in this country. Every state has a different Driver's License format. Some states use a person's SSN for their DL number. Some states use the "soundex" system. Our I.D. system in the USA (for cars, boats, guns, people, property ownership, etc.) is just an open invitation to terrorists!

Heck, we can't even keep track of convicted ______ offenders in Florida! IMO the entire I.D. system in the USA needs to be addressed. Rob (for example) knows how easy it is to get a legitimate Florida I.D. card or DL. Many people in this country have multiple DL's from different states and under different names.

But, as long as we have the stupid system we've got now, I agree with the Disney plate idea. Make a Wish Foundation is the perfect place for the revenue!

yup.... I'm driving on my Puerto Rico license in my wallet right now, because it holds no reciprocity with my Florida insurance.

here's another useful link

http://www.floridapl8s.com/

this year, we've approved:

Florida Dream Foundation (this one is awesome. this plate would do very well in most states)
Discover Florida's Oceans (i like this one. it came to this and John Lennon)
Support Soccer (wow... how did this one get through??)
Kids Deserve Justice (amen!)
Parents Make A Difference (double amen!)
Animal Friend Plate Florida Animal Friend (version 2)
Florida Association of Food Banks/John Lennon Imagine Plate (my plate!)
Family Values (eh... i don't care for it)
Save Our Seas (it looks cool, but won't sell well)
Family First (it's cute)
Aquaculture (the Nemo plate! don't believe me? look here: <img src="http://www.floridapl8s.com/pl8s2b/aquaculture.jpg">)
Sportsmens (i love wildlife plates... EXCEPT this one)

we have the following designs pending:
Nascar (already approved, design is pending)
Florida Lighthouse Association (which has a very bad design as far as visibility)
Trust God (50/50 chance in this state)
Florida Boating Plate (this will happen... I see it)

and we denied the following ones:

Florida Stop Melanoma (this one surprised me)
Florida Miami Metrozoo (this one would have been cool. I love the wildlife designs)
The British American Foundation (as did this one... Florida has the highest number of permanent and temporary British residents outside of the Commonwealth)
Second Amendment Club Of America (did not surprise me)
Animal Friend Plate Plate for Paws Organization (version 1)
National Guard (this one shocked that it didn't get approved)
Omega PSI PHI (meh)
Sons of Confederate Veterans (this one won't fly in Florida)

since i was sixteen i have had vanity plates on my car and they read

dsnywld.... you dont know how many people ask me if i work for disney. im a proud supporter of my obsession. i can upload a pic if needed.

I don't think they will ever come out with one so I think I am going to replace the orange with a Mickey like mentioned before.
