Flight of Passage Pre-show Burn-In has begun

Just got off FoP, and the inevitable has happened - the second pre-show has begun to have artifacts from"burn-in," an unfortunate byproduct of using OLED screens.

For those who do not know, Burn-in occurs when a screen displays the same or similar images for long periods of time. This was common on older screens before LCD and LED screens took hold in consumer electronics, but OLED screens with their "absolute black" brought them back.

Flight of Passage uses it for it's pre-show, as it allows the screens to be invisible behind the black acrylic panel. Unfortunately, they will have to be replaced when the burn in gets bad.

For now, the only effect of it is the presence of numbered circles in the safety video. But it will get worse over time.

Thoughts, info, etc?

I wonder how bad they'll let it get before they'll replace the screens. It is (or was, SWGE is coming) their huge attraction so you'd think they would want it to be in near perfect shape.

Or they may be like “oh well it’s still hugely popular so why do we need to spend money to fix that?” Not that I agree but they’ve demonstrated this line of thinking many times before. The problems will eventually pile up as the ride gets older, the ratings will fall, and instead of putting some decent money into maintaining and updating it, they’ll spend an exorbitant amount of money to turn it into something new.

Occasionally they happen, but too many of the small updates and such get cancelled.

Interestingly, they seem to have cut down on his "hms" and "uhs." The same pre-show run began with him saying that the banshee are the keystone species of Pandora, and that we'll be scanned immidiately. Cut pretty much all dialogue before that.

Though that may have been because our link chamber was running a bit behind, and didn't even fill all the way.

The “hms” and “uhs” are built in as a feature the an adaptable-length preshow - if the theater you’re heading to needs more time before it can send you in, the preshow can extend to keep you busy longer. A clever feature, if somewhat annoyingly executed.

You may have been lucky that day and the theater was running without delay and able to take you straight in.

Boy makes you wonder if there is a malfunction it just leaves to nothing but....

Yup. My second shortest pre-show was opening morning, with a normal but heavy use of ums and uhs. Shortest was today.

Now if I can only figure out how to make that happen every time...

Thanks for that find. You can tell they were purposely going for "techie realness" in the way he was directed. Also, he can do heavy Indian accents to none (from a native U.S. speaker's perspective). For FoP, he does a slight Indian accent, presumably to show how globally diverse the future is (cf. Star Trek). In FoP he changes his th's into d's for the accent.

New screens are obviously a drop in the ocean cash-wise for Disney, so they can easily be replaced and were probably designed to be so. The problem of course is that it will be long overdue before it is actually done.

Unfortunately, it is sci fi for a reason. Replacement is needed, and Disney can absolutely afford it. Whether or not they do, and how long it takes them to is another thing.

Meh, high quality zone lit LCDs can produce near blacks and won't suffer the issue. My QLED Samsung TV produces very deep blacks. Not as good as OLED, but if OLED is going to look like crap in 6 months, what's the point?

It's the wrong application of OLED if they are going to have static images, period. Now we have to watch a terrible picture until they swap them.
