Trip Report Flabby, Fat & Lazy, Run A Race And Oopsy-Daisy! A 2013 Wine & Dine 1/2 Marathon Weekend Trip Report!

Hellooooooo humans! It's another runDisney trip report!

The cast is a small one this time around...just my husband Will (28) and me, Shannon (29).
WnDEdit-330.jpg

This runDisney trip was different from my other ones in a few ways, the biggest being that the primary motivation was not to run the half marathon (although I did sign up for the half...I can't pass up the opportunity to earn some runDisney bling :D). No, the main reason we booked this trip was to run Mickey's Jingle Jungle 5K...together! It was Will's first race at Disney...actually, his first race ever!
WnDEdit-039.jpg

We originally had our sights set on May's Expedition Everest Challenge, but quickly realized that the race would more than likely fall during a big tennis tournament that Will coaches each year. It seemed stupid to sign up for such an expensive race ($210 for both of us to do the 5K! o_O) with such a strong possibility that we wouldn't actually be able to participate, so that's when we switched gears and planned on the Wine & Dine weekend.

If any of you have read my other runDisney race reports you may be wondering what happened to my normal runDisney partner-in-crime, Princess Craiggy (my brother Craig, 27). Why didn't he come along and run the half with me? Apparently the idea of doing a night race really freaks him out for whatever reason. Plus, he's pretty busy - and broke - being a smarty-pants graduate student in a rigorous nursing program. (He IS still running though, and he's mentioned doing another runDisney race weekend more than once.) And finally, I sort of thought Will and I needed a little getaway, just the two of us.

WnDEdit-032.jpg

The other big way that this trip was different was that it was the first time I've ever come into a runDisney race trip thinking there was a strong possibility that I'd either not start a race or drop out due to injury. :( My last long run during training was a 12-miler on November 3, the Sunday before the race. Out of nowhere I had weird knee pain at mile 9 and changed my stride to compensate for it. I felt okay once I was done, but as the night went on I increasingly felt like I had an intense cramp in my left foot. The next morning it felt like I had a serious strain, and I spent the rest of the week hobbling around work, popping ibuprofen like it was candy, icing my foot, and researching compression socks and taping methods that I hoped would help me quickly heal or at least successfully limp through the race. (My knee, the thing that had started this whole mess, felt perfectly fine.) Monday and Tuesday were the worst - I was in serious pain and wasn't even looking forward to the trip. What if I couldn’t start the races? What if I started and got pulled off the course? I know they give out medals to people even if they don't finish (no comment on that policy...:angelic:), what would I do with the medal? There's no way I'd keep it. What if I tore or ruptured something? Would I cause serious damage here? WHAT ABOUT MY TRIP REPORT?! :D Seriously though, it was a pretty miserable week.

On Wednesday I felt a little better and was starting to think that maybe I could make it through. By Thursday I was pretty sure I was going to at least try both races, knowing full well that due to my stubbornness (and, let's be honest, stupidity) there was no way I'd willingly leave the course once I started unless something serious happened.

It was just a really weird time...by far the least excited I've ever been for a Disney trip. :(

Final Thoughts

Port Orleans French Quarter: As two self-proclaimed deluxe resort snobs, we were very, very surprised at how much we liked French Quarter. It was so relaxing and pleasant, our room was great, and we had short rides to Magic Kingdom and Epcot (obviously can't comment on the commutes to the Studios and Animal Kingdom since we never made it to those parks). After our honeymoon I never thought we'd stray from the Boardwalk, but as time goes on and we try different resorts I keep finding myself saying, "Yep, I'll definitely return to that one." French Quarter is definitely on the "will return to" list.

Food: No new places for us on this trip...we know what we like. :D Via Napoli, 'Ohana and Be Our Guest (lunch) are consistent winners for us, and we'll be back! My new WDW favorite is definitely Rose Regale...I foresee lots of delicious flutes of that tasty bubbly on future trips! :inlove:

The Parks: We only made it to Magic Kingdom and Epcot, but everything looks great. Splash was the best we'd seen it, probably ever. The decorations are great. Can't wait to see WDW fully gussied up for the holidays soon!

Magic Bands/MyMagic+: Both Will and I agreed that the Magic Bands were nice to have. It was nice to have our Annual Passes, room keys and a way to charge things all in one device. They were comfortable and it was nice to have FP+ booked ahead of time. But that's really all I can say about them...they were NICE. They were convenient...but I wouldn't say they made our trip any better. I'm definitely in the camp of wishing that the money to develop this technology had been spent elsewhere. And I guess I'll leave it at that. o_O

Food & Wine Festival: It's true what they say here on the boards...AVOID Food & Wine Festival on weekend nights! Yikes! World Showcase on Saturday night vs. World Showcase on Sunday afternoon was like night and day...literally and figuratively. :p My biggest regret of this trip is that we didn't have more Food & Wine time. If I could do things differently I would have made our Sunday dinner reservation later and skipped the Magic Kingdom the last morning of our trip in favor of more Food & Wine. Next time!

Running Thoughts: Did I mention that my foot was injured during this trip? No? Because it was. Obviously that overshadowed a lot of the race experiences (and a lot of the weekend as a whole). I think it was probably pretty stupid of me to run with the injury, but really, with having paid the entry fee (and been well past the race deferral deadline), booked the hotel and flights, taken the time off at work, etc....there's no way I would have been able to skip out and not lose a ton of money. Plus, I'm stubborn and a little stupid...so there's that.

So while it was stupid, I'm glad I did it. The 5K was a blast, and I had a great time running it with Will. Hopefully we'll do more races at Disney together. :D Wine & Dine was awesome - best half marathon course at WDW, in my opinion, and the first half marathon I've done there that I KNOW for sure I want to do again.

Future Running: After getting home from WDW the foot was pretty bad and I hobbled for a few more days, all the while telling myself that if it didn't get better by the next week I'd see a doctor. Slowly but surely it began to improve, and 2 weeks out from race day it was finally completely better. :) It still feels a little stiff when I first wake up, but that's going away, too. I'm not taking any chances though...I promised myself (and Will) that I was going to take the rest of November off from running to make sure I fully kick this thing, and I've stuck to that. Since I've started running in 2008 this is the longest stretch I've had with no running...and it's been weird going from running 4 days per week to zero days per week, but I'm mostly okay with it. I've been doing some strength training and yoga, which I've always done sporadically, but I'm starting to think about how to incorporate both more regularly when I do start running again. I think this will be important going forward in staying healthy. I'm planning on hitting the treadmill again on December 2 and slowly but surely building the mileage back up. I'm probably being over-cautious but I don't want this injury to happen again.

Future Disney Running! With Wine & Dine complete there's just one long race I haven't done at WDW - the Tower of Terror 10-miler. I'm 50/50 on whether I want to do that one this year...it's the same weekend as a work trip I've already committed to, so I'd need to do the race Saturday evening and then fly to Chicago for work on Sunday...then fly home late on Tuesday. And it would most likely be a solo trip due to Will's tennis commitments. So it's doable, but I still haven't decided one way or the other. One thing I know I will NOT be doing in 2014 is heading to WDW for Marathon Weekend. It'll be weird not to be there after participating 2 years in a row, but we have a long, no-running (!!) WDW trip coming up that's been in the works for awhile, and we are so looking forward to it. Of the last 4 trips to WDW Will and I have taken together, 3 have been centered around runDisney events. It's time for a break.

With that longer trip in mind (which has been in the works for over 2 years!) I've been planning on heading back to WDW for Marathon Weekend in 2015. It's the 10th anniversary of the Goofy Challenge, so that was originally my goal...but then runDisney had to up the stakes and announce the Dopey Challenge. And a Pluto 5K medallion for the 5K.:facepalm: And a Minnie Mouse medal for the 10K.:facepalm::facepalm: Oh runDisney...you got me again.

Good-bye, money! Hello Dopey 2015! :D

Happy Thanksgiving, and thanks for reading!

Okay, time to put this bad boy to bed. But first, for @6laurac ...

Here's the "Where's Mickey?" backpack I got from World of Disney. I remember looking specifically for one that had the "full-body" Mickeys (in the green flower on the lower left corner and on the stem in the lower right corner):

The front pocket has a magnetic clasp...here's the inside fabric:

Blurry picture of the inside of the main compartment:
IMG_2959.jpg

Back of the bag has a zipper pocket:

This wasn't my first choice bag...I really wanted a hipster, but they were sold out at World of Disney when I got there. I'm really glad I got this backpack though, it's a GREAT park bag. :)

Here's the hipster...it was delivered on Monday, so I didn't get to pick it out in person but I LOVE it. I think they're sold out now on DisneyStore.com:

So this is my everyday purse now, and I LOVE IT!!! :inlove:

Wow! Super sweet and thoughtful of you to show me (and the other VB girl's) your goodies, ...I see the Disney tag discreetly peeking out of those great looking bags. I wonder what will be the next color scheme since they are sellouts. I meant to get a Hipster the first day they were posted and sadly missed out. I use hipsters or backpacks all the time too.

Thank you so much for posting this! Maybe we can run a 1/2 together at Disney one day-and reward ourselves with the newest VB bags for finishing. Thanks and Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours

Yeah, they are definitely selling like hotcakes. Almost everything in the "Where's Mickey?" pattern is gone from the website!

Haha, sounds like a plan to me! Hope you had a Happy Thanksgiving too! :)
The sky in your last day pics is amazing!
We had GREAT weather for our trip! It was awesome!! I just need to sit and stare at those pics instead of out the window at our grey skies here. :grumpy:

Sooooo I asked "Santa" for the Where's Mickey backpack. Santa said it was sold out.

I was lamenting to Bill about this and how perfect it would be for the parks when he replied "Uh I thought thats why you bought the Dooney hipster? (he didn't call it that - he called it that new expensive purse with spaceship earth) So you don't need a backpack?"

:rolleyes:Um....did I say that?? Well I'll need a backpack for trips with you and the hipster for trips with the girls...DUH;)

Nooooooooo

I just looked on the Disney Store website and they have quite a few of the Veras back in stock...when I looked the other day there was only one "Where's Mickey?" thing left (large duffel I think?) and now there are 3 other things there too - no backpack yet so hopefully the backpack will be there in time for Santa to do his thang.

No Bill. No No No. Boys just don't understand purse/bag needs. Will didn't say much about my buying the backpack, but I think that's probably because I was carrying some of his crap in it for him. :D

"that new expensive purse with spaceship earth"....hahaha! :hilarious:

Loved all the wide-angle shots (although it did no favors for the lady paying for her ice cream in the Plaza... :cautious:)

I didn't make it to F&W Fest this year  for the first time in like 12 years...I really wanted to try the Potato Leek Waffle, glad to hear it was tasty! Hope to get there next year (long weekends in October are my very favorite time to go, btw ;) )

Oh noooooo. Hopefully they will bring back that waffle and you can try it some other time, it was so good! We didn't get to try a lot, but of what we did try it was the favorite for both of us.

Long weekends in October = good...noted!

I wanted a where's mickey bag too! But, all sold out and I don't need another large duffel. Oh well, maybe next time :)
OMG! I read your message and looked on the website...only the large duffel in "Where's Mickey?" and the pink pattern. These things must be selling like crazy, I swear when I looked yesterday there were like 10-12 different Veras left.

Also...I didn't NEED another hipster...and yet...;)

The pictures were up on the site yesterday, but when you clicked on them, they either said sold out or they let you click on the add to bag and then told you it couldn't be added to your cart! I was so excited when I thought I would get to order a backpack because they were sold out when I was at WDW 2 weeks ago, then my hopes were dashed when it said it couldn't be added to bag! I'm still waiting to get a hipster also!

Ugh, I hate that! :( I wish they'd stop the site from doing that. They got me once when I tried to order a Dooney crossbody in the 40th anniversary pattern. I had it IN MY CART and was never able to check out because it apparently sold out. I was so sad! Hopefully they'll get a handle on how best to stock the Veras soon.

Hi Shannon! Finally got around to reading this sorry I'm late to the wagon...and while I am you are having some fun in the World! Sorry to hear about your foot the week before the race. And props to you for seeming to handle that flight situation well....I wouldn't have lol.

Seeing your pics of the expo is getting me really excited for the Princess Half Weekend coming up! I just want to run it already! lol.

Love that Vera Bag! I bought the Hipster Hidden Mickey print from the online store for my Mom for Christmas! I bought it when it first went up! Unfortunately, I didn't realize there was defect (its not horrible but the material wasn't really sewn right on the handle and it could start to fray at any time. I can't exchange it because they are no longer available so Mom wanted to keep it but at least disneystore.com gave me a giftcard for about half of what I paid for it. Sorry I went on a rant there that was off topic. But anyways I love that print too! I hate the first two.

Congrats on Will's first race! I'm glad he had fun! Good to know about the magic band being comfortable while running. I had no problem with it in September, but I was worried about that for the Princess coming up even though my husband isn't running in any race with me :( But that's okay. He'll come to one some day.

I have a question to...you bring your own bagels and peanut butter on the plane with you?? I was thinking about what I was going to eat, which is a bagel and possibly a banana (but that wouldn't make it lol) and not sure how you took it down with you. I'm kind of iffy on morning runs...i always run after work (I am not a morning person so getting up for a 640 am flight friday, and then two 530 am runs on sat and sun will be interesting lol) but a bagel is always good for me.

My next question to you was what time do you usually get up for a 530 am race, but my question was answered....245 am???? I have a feeling I'm not going to sleep for a couple of days!

I'm glad you're liking the night race! (besides your foot hurting) the ToT 10 miler was fun at night you should totally do that one next!!!

I am loving your pics through Animal Kingdom! I'm surprised there was no sort of lights on Everest though, that would have looked pretty like didn't they used to have red on it at night when the park was opened that late?

How cool is that to run through the Osborne lights too??? That must have just been AMAZING.

Congrats on finishing the Half Marathon on a stinky (not in the smelly way but probably in the smelly way too actually) foot. Glad you got the mojo back the last mile!

You have to go back for Food and Wine sometime. Seriously, the food they have its just all heavenly. It's totally worth it.

Love all the pictures you took this trip! Especially all the wide angle. Looking forward to the next one hopefully you use it more!

Thanks in advance for all the runDisney answers you give me, I know I have a long post here. And I hope you had an awesome long vacation! Loved following you on instagram and hopefully we will be down at the same time sometime in the future to spend some more time chatting!

And I'm glad you liked POFQ, it's one of my favorite resorts too!!! :)

That's when I bought my hipster too! I get the emails from the Disney Store each morning and saw a picture of it on the email, and just went right to the site and whipped out my credit card! Good thing because everything in that print seems to be sold out constantly. When we were at WDW last week I only saw the large duffel in the Hidden Mickey print. That stinks that your mom's bag isn't quite perfect! :( Those Veras definitely don't last forever. I'm with you, the first 2 just do not do anything for me.

Thank you! :D Yes, neither of us had issues with the bands, both during running and otherwise. On Saturday we both still had ours on when we landed at our home airport just because we'd gotten so used to them. It's just so nice to have everything right there.
I have a question to...you bring your own bagels and peanut butter on the plane with you?? I was thinking about what I was going to eat, which is a bagel and possibly a banana (but that wouldn't make it lol) and not sure how you took it down with you. Yes, I got bagels at a local place the day before the trip and packed those in my suitcase, along with disposable knives and small packs of peanut butter (I got some Jif thing at the store that has 8 individual-sized containers). Each of the bagels went into their own Ziploc baggies so that they'd stay fresh, and then I had 2 quart-sized bags, one for the 5K food (bagel and PB for me and Will) and one for the half with another bagel and PB for me. So I just take the quart-sized bag with me to the starting area and eat there. I have this down to a science! :D Everything just went into my checked luggage. I'm weirdly paranoid about pre-race eating, and I know that the Disney resort counter service places sometimes have race-morning specials but I don't want to depend on them for it...PLUS I want to eat exactly like I eat at home before a race, and the best way to do that is to bring exactly what I eat at home. Like I said, paranoid!
My next question to you was what time do you usually get up for a 530 am race, but my question was answered....245 am???? I have a feeling I'm not going to sleep for a couple of days!
2:45! Buses depart between 3 and 4AM and how awful would it be to miss a bus?! I just never want to take any changes and aim to get on a bus by 3:30 at the latest...you just never know.
I'm glad you're liking the night race! (besides your foot hurting) the ToT 10 miler was fun at night you should totally do that one next!!!
I reeeeeally want to do that one...it would line up nicely with my training plan for Marathon Weekend 2015, but it would be a solo trip and would back up with a work trip (so I'd have to fly out of WDW right to the work thing)...but I REALLY want that Tower of Terror medal!
I am loving your pics through Animal Kingdom! I'm surprised there was no sort of lights on Everest though, that would have looked pretty like didn't they used to have red on it at night when the park was opened that late?
You're right! I remember seeing pictures of that! Hmmm...o_O

AHHH it totally was! That's probably my favorite race experience next to running down Main Street/through the castle for the first time. :D

Ugh, I know...I feel like that weekend was such a tease. I really want to pick some random October weekend with NO RACE and just gorge myself. Some day!
Love all the pictures you took this trip! Especially all the wide angle. Looking forward to the next one hopefully you use it more!
I didn't give the UWA quite the workout I was expecting on this trip...in fact there were entire half-day portions of the trip where I'd go to a park *gasp* without my camera! :jawdrop: So I haven't totally decided whether I'll do a trip report or not, because trip reports are always better with lots of pictures! I did Instagram a ton though, as you know. :D The more I think about it the more I think I want to write a report, just not totally sure yet.

The trip was really awesome and so different from other trips we've had. It was so nice to have a trip that was 1. Longer, and 2. Not centered around a race. I really needed it!

I actually might be in WDW during the Princess Half (not running) so maybe we can meet up!!

And yes, LOVED POFQ. I think it's my favorite moderate!

Good to hear you had no issues with the magic bands. I won't have to worry about it during the Princess.

Not sure I'll get by with getting bagels on the plane this time around...I'm not planning on checking any luggage since this is a short trip...And I have no idea if we can even bring that on in a carry on?

I'm actually starting to get really worried about getting up that early to run...I don't do that at home because I'm a night owl and prefer to stay up late rather than get up early....I know in my heart that I should practice and get up earlier to run, but I know that won't happen lol i told my husband he can sleep in when I run the 10k but told him to be somewhere along the half route and meet me at the end lol.

You should still write a report! You can use the instagram pics! I've seen a few people do that before.

You might be in WDW for the Princess Half??? Let me know! That's awesome! We should definitely meet up. We're staying at the Poly so I plan on staying in that area the whole time, except to run. Going to enjoy the resort. We're flying in early on Fri 2/21 and leaving in the evening on 2/24. Let me know when you'll be there!!!

And thank you for answering all my questions about running!!! And happy you guys had a great trip!!!

Good to hear you had no issues with the magic bands. I won't have to worry about it during the Princess.
Yeah, it was totally fine...I think probably because I'm used to running with stuff on my wrists (watch on the right, Road ID on the left...so Magic Band on the left instead of Road ID). I could see it being annoying for people that don't like running with stuff on their wrists.
Not sure I'll get by with getting bagels on the plane this time around...I'm not planning on checking any luggage since this is a short trip...And I have no idea if we can even bring that on in a carry on?
I THINK you can. We visited one of Will's aunts over the summer and she sent us to the airport with snacks...we thought we couldn't take them but she said it would be okay, and she was right. I think the peanut butter would have been fine for me because it was a small, sealed contained (less than 3 ounces).
That's always the most nerve-wracking part for me too. I set multiple alarms (phone, alarm clock and wake-up call) because I'm so paranoid I'll sleep through the race. I'm more of a night owl too but adrenaline really carries me through those Disney races. And then I crash later after food and a shower. :D

I probably will! Not sure how good it will be but I do love writing trip reports. :D

Yep! Nothing's booked and it would be super last-minute, but I'll let you know! :) We can PM and exchange cell numbers.

Love, love, loved your trip report! I have been debating doing a rundisney marathon.. I run all the time at home and adding Disney to the mix would just be perfection! I'm so sorry you had a bad foot during your run, but you are really inspiring! I'm so proud that you finished! I kept seeing pictures of those mile markers and smiled! Way to go girl! I did Toughmudder last year, so I feel like rundisney event can't be worse than that. Thanks for your report.. it's so awesome you got recognized while out in the parks!!
