Fix my computer!

Hey, as if I didn't have ENOUGH viruses on my computer already, I have yet another issue I need help with.

I downloaded a program called Spyware Nuker to clean up my harddrive a bit and get rid of some infected files. Well, this Nuker found 1302 infected files (I'm surprised my computer still worked), and after I got rid of those, my internet stopped working.

Basically, every on the computer except Internet Explorer works. All websites show a "page cannot be displayed" page, but it seems to be a fake one. The links on it have mouseovers that say "Rolex Replicas" and appear to generate from one of the spyware things that I was supposedly infected with and supposedly deleted.

My amateur analysis would be that I need to reinstall IE, but since I can't view ANY websites because IE is the only browser I have, I'm not sure how to go about downloading a new IE browser.

Does anyone have any ideas on how to go about doing this? Or an idea of another solution to this problem.

my computer had spyware and it like totally shut down my mom thought it died but she had some one look at it and he took the spyware off and installed something to make sure it doesnt come back so maybe u should have some one look at it to c wut is wrong with it

Have you tried typing an address (like www.yahoo.com) into the address bar? I am sure you have tried this, but I had to ask to make sure. What does it give you then?

Unfortunately, a lot of supposed spyware removal programs usually identify files that you actually need as being spyware, so you have to have some idea what the file is for before you delete it. Not to mention some spyware removal software just throws more junk on there.

Fixing something like this may involve a lot of time finding files on your computer - you would probably be better off, unless you are really, really into computers and know what you are doing, bringing it in to a shop. There is the alternative of just copying all the files you need onto CDs or disks or something, and then reinstalling the operating system.

Yeah. It gives me that "page cannot be displayed" page with the weird links (that lead to more "page cannot be displayed" pages)

I assume you are running a version of Windows. If you are, it is a good idea in my opinion to every year wipe the hard drive clean and reinstall Windows from fresh (after of couse making backups of all data you wish to keep)

How you do this will depend on what version of Windows you have and in what format the operating system came. I won't speculate on the many combinations out there, however most people have connections to "a friend who knows about computers" (I am that friend to many) who can help you. See if you can get some advice locally. It's not difficult (if you know what you are doing) but can be a little time consuming as you wait for things to complete.

If you have no local connections then let us know what version of windows you have and what CD has the software and hopefully the gang here can help. But it's no substitute for having someone on hand.

As far as anti-spyware programs go I like Spybot. It's free and it has yet to mess up my PC.

Oh, well I had to reinstall my windows platform. Slip in the windows CD and reinstall. Deleted all my data so you might want to back it up. * Documents*

I also use Spybot & Ad aware that I run on a regular basis. My McAfee also picks up spyware. I don't usually delete I quarantine that way I can replace something if I took it out accidentally.
Do you have Windows XP? It has an System Restore property.
That tracks and restores any changes you may have made that were harmful. You may want to try that.

I had internet eraser for a couple of years and it worked good. When I get a webpage hijacker or a disruptive virus I use my recovery disk and start from scratch. That's also why I keep a record of all my important web contacts and addresses.There are ALOT of ie hompage hijackers! Are these even legal?Many come from a internet based company called 180solutions, these people make me VERY mad- I feel it is an intrusion of my privacy.

Is that a separate disc or something on the harddrive? And will using it delete all of my files? My main concern in reinstalling my windows is losing all of my disney vacation pictures, all of the ride/parade/show videos, and the 1000+ songs on my iPod. I know these can be backed up onto disc and then just reinstalled, but that's quite cumbersome and I would like to avoid it if possible.

Its already built in. Click on the start button on the tool bar.
Click on Help & Support. Under Pick A Task click on Undo changes with System Restore. Follow the prompts. Any changes that this makes can be undone so you can get stuff back if it takes out something you want. It takes your computer back to before you made changes.

Also, you're from Monroe? For some reason I am remembering one of the servers at 1900 Park Fare (Carol, I think) was from Monroe. I got a pic with her because I liked her so much. :)

Hope it works out for you. I've never eaten 1900 Park Fare, but it would be cool to run into someone from home who was working there.(I'd love to see her pic to see if I know her) On one trip we had a waitress in the Whispereing Canyon Cafe who was from Queens Village originally. It was great because both my DH & I grew up there. It was nice to talk about all the places we knew.

And why are you working on a beautiful Saturday! :lol: :wave:

Tigsmom, you rock! I restored my computer to before everything went down the crapper, and downloaded a new spyware software (thanks barnum for the spybot recommendation) and that seems to have done the trick!

And I put a pic of the server from Monroe in my photoalbum for you, tigsmom :)
