I'm traveling in August with two first-timers, I was told by the reservation folks to ask for the "First Visit" buttons for the other two guys. Has anybody had any good experiences with these? Please share!

When you arrive at one of the parks, go to Guest Relations and ask for the "First Time Visitor" button. We got it for my in-laws on our last visit. They got lots of greetings from CMs.

They also have buttons for birthdays, which was fun!

I went with a group of friends from college, and I got one of my buddies the "First Visit" pin. He had plenty of attention from CM's and even got a free churro in Mexico (the lady asked...is it really your first time? Well if it is then this one is on me). I thought that was really neat of her and it gave him an awesome perception of what I had been telling him all along of how great the cast is there. If anything, I think it is worth it for rides such as ToT, JC, HM...All of the CM's REALLy set the moods for these rides and if they notice you are a rook than they may try just a lil bit harder to impress you and make you feel that "Disney Magic". A spookier greeting at ToT, a real push to scare you in the stretching room or on the load platform of HM, and more corny jokes and a much more animated personality on JC are all things that you can hope for when wearing the pin.

I will get a birthday button when I go in September and a few of the people in my group will be getting first-timer buttons. That is a great idea.

In my opinion the "Birthday Button" garnishes the most attention and is most likely to get you special perks..Fastpass, freebies, kindness...etc..(actually birthday pins comes in a close second to something bad happening to you at the parks, this definitely gains the most attention and gives you the most freebies) haha...Keep your fingers crossed that you just stick with the birthday button.

Is it okay to get a bday button and notify a restaurant of a bday if it's not that actual day?

one of my kids has a Christmas week birthday... so she really gets the bad end of the birthday stick if you ask me. LOL

her day is 2 weeks after our trip.... but I thought about maybe getting a cake and making a "birthday" deal out of our last day there to make her feel special... she doesn't get much of that on her day because everyone is exhausted from the holidays.

I could just see people saying happy birthday, etc and her going into a spiel about how it's not really her actual birthday, but will be, etc as kids can do. LOL and then CMs thinking we're being dishonest.

Always a good rule of thumb is, don't go necessarily looking for, or expecting, a big deal, so any little deal seems bigger as a result. Get a 1st. timer button, or a birthday button, or bride and groom ears if the situation warrants. You'll get kind smiles and "welcome" or "happy bday" or "congratulations" etc., and it's nice when people are nice to you. But sometimes it seems people get angry that they're not getting more of a fuss, or more freebies, or more elaborate freebies, etc.

I'm not saying that's the case with anyone here. I'm saying, get the button, and enjoy what, if anything, comes your way, but if someone says "I got a free dessert," or "I got a free pair of mouse ears" or "everyone in the restaurant sang to me," don't go in expecting any or all of those things will definitely happen to you, too.

Kinda like the deal with "entertaining" wait staff at Whicpering Canyon. Yeah, they have their schtick, little things they'll often do based on whether you ask for ketchup or a straw or soda refills or whatever. But once in a while, someone is bound to walk in with a damn checklist of everything they've been TOLD to do, and expect the wait staff to perform like dancing monkeys. "Ahem...excuse me, might I please have a straw?...ok, got that...Excuse me? Might I have a napkin?...ok, did that...excuse me, did you notice I am wearing a t-shirt from a destination that is now owned or operated by Walt Disney?...ok, got that, wow this is fun!" Yeah, fun for YOU maybe. Stuff like that, just like the little perks you get with a button/specialty mouse ears, is better when unexpected.

I dont see any problem whatsoever with wanting to celebrate your birthday at WDW. I am sure that they will see no problem in it either. I will be partaking in the same celebrations for my girlfriends birthday on August 18th although she turns 22 on August 2nd.
